Strange as it may seem I found little ferret today, he was very wet, cold and looking pretty sad fro himself so I brought him in and cleaned him up. He had no collar or anything like that and while I don't know a whole lot about ferrets I'd say he seems to be pretty young. Now, I'd really like to keep this little dude, him and I get on well already (He's asleep on my lap right now), but I'm just wondering if that's a terrible idea? I am going to the shop soon to get him a nice ferret cage and plenty of stuff that's good for him.
Anyone here keep ferrets? I know usually you'd want to keep two ferrets together because they are sociable animals but him and I will be together a LOT, literally most of the time so I'm hoping that's not an issue. Have no doubts though, if I believe myself incapable of keeping him safe and happy I will be giving him to someone more capable, I'd just like to try first.
Suggestions/Comments?

I'd say good luck, and (hopefully) have fun. While you do keep him, I'd ask around if anyone nearby misses their ferret. He might just be lost :)
Also, some things you might want to know about ferrets;
Wiki is usefull like that. I'd also ask you local vet for advice, and to find out how old he is (or even if it's a 'he') so you know what your heading into - wiki said they might jsut live from 7 to 10 years, so that's a long-term companion right there.
Glad to hear your plannin on providing him a better home if you for whatever reason ain't - wise of you.
Anyhow, good luck. Though of a name for him/her yet?
*EDIT* messed up link. *EDIT3* Screw it, I fail. Go to the wiki article on ferrets, for some usefull info.

Welcome to the world of your friends going, "What's that smell? Is it you? Smells tangy!" then you have to wonder where and when did the ferret pee on your clothes.

Guessing you will do fine with your new friend. You are already showing you are looking towards its proper care getting it appropriate food and so on.
Just to be on the up-and-up you might consider posting some fliers in the neighborhood and/or contact your local animal shelter/police department that you found the little guy. I know you are bonding with him (her?) but someone may be upset over losing their pet. If you get on well with this one and it is claimed you can go get yourself another if it comes to that.
I do not have experience with owning a ferret but I understand they can be a bit challenging as a pet. Not awful by any means but they can keep you on your toes. Best you read up on the critters both to get a sense of what to expect and how to best care for it (which will likely make you both a lot happier). Obviously lots of people keep them as pets so nothing scary there I suspect but forewarned is a good strategy.

Strangely enough I was playing eve ohh about 2 years ago, and a HAMSTER no less ran across my living room.
Being a kind hearted soul I captured it in a box after poking out from under the radiator with a clothes hanger and left it on the kitchen counter whilst I decided what to do with it.
In the end I decided against the cost of a phone call to the RSPCA and let it make its own fate by releasing it in to the quiet suburban street outside my door.
Foxes? Cats? Seagulls? Pah! I like to believe 'Hammy' waddled off in to the night and met a beautiful lady hamster and lived happily ever after.
Just saying, OK? |

Thanks for the support guys!
I'm pretty sure it's NOT a pet or if it is it's been missing for quite some time, I live literally miles and miles away from anyone, you look in any direction from the house and it's just fields and trees so what would he be doing out here if he was a pet from someone's house? he didn't have a collar or harness on either.
I'd not even know where to begin putting flyers but I'll take him to a Vet and get them to check for an RFID chip and to make sure he's ok.
Pics to follow!

It's actually funny, once I found a stray 18 year old girl lost in my back yard. I kept her of course and we spent many an hour, master and pet learing all sorts of wonderful tricks...

Well, ferrets are a domesticated animal. Have been for a few thousand years. Some can go feral and live in the wild but then I doubt it would be as friendly as it is with you. As such it is almost certainly a runaway from someone else's home.
It may be the little guy has wandered many miles from home and there is no reasonable way to determine its previous owners but just saying.

Appearances to the contrary and just to nitpick ferrets are actually not a rodent (not even related).

Not sureif you can get a Ferret Electronically tagged, but you might wanna go to a Vet and ask, and if so, get him scanned for a chip.

Edited by: Kazang on 14/12/2009 19:36:04 Well i have kept ferrets before, and can tell you a few things about them.
If you keep them in a cage they start to smell really bad unless you wash them all the time. Secondly if that ferret is being friendly to you it is most likely a pet, or was someones pet before. Ferret cubs(if thats the right word) are pretty scared of people from the outset and it takes them a while to get used to people. Then generally are pretty violent and will try to bite you constantly until they are older and figure out your friendly and even then often won't like strangers. Long story short only ferrets that are used to people will be friendly, wild ones will just try to bite your fingers off.
My guess is it was someone's unwanted pet and they chucked it out in the middle of nowhere, or more likely someone was ferreting nearby (do you have a lot of rabbits around?) and the ferret got lost and wandered off the wrong way.

FYI ferrets are illegal some places. You may not care (I probably wouldn't) but if you do you might want to check your local laws.

FYI, ferrets love hammocks. If you do keep it, you'll want to get one for its cage (the pet store should sell them.) They can also be *partially* litter box trained. =/ Some enjoy swimming. The first time you bathe a ferret, you will shocked at just how thin its body is. There's a good chance they can slip under some of the doors in your home (say a 1/2" gap?)

Id suggest at least popping over to a vet/RSPCA (if ur in the UK) at least get it checked out make sure theres nothing wrong with he/she. Id also check it is actually a ferret and not something else that might be on a protected list or something.
From what Ive sorta learned through the marvels of the little moving picture box, ferrets are very social and very curious animals. Apparently they welcome you when you come home . They also like smelling things, so plenty of wind inducing foods for you may be a good idea and a lead (leash) for walkies is a good idea too. If you do keep it I would look more into TV is good but interweb is better everything Ive learned comes from Animal Park.

Illegal in California, though they sell ferret food in the pet store and the vets will see it though you have to make an appointment for a "special cat"

Checking local laws is a good idea yeah but I doubt it'd be a problem anyway, I live in west Wales, the "law" here is liable to say "Oh well, that's a nice ferret you've got there! Did you like that pie my Dwynwen made?" instead of book me, just like what happened with my motorbike
I intend upon taking him to the nearest vet in the morning and, dependant upon how that goes, buying him a much nicer cage and some toys.
I've been looking at lots of online resources about ferrets and it's been a great help, as have you guys! The little dude's asleep right now but I'll take some pictures in the morning when he's more active. ______________________________________________

Ferrets can be great pets. Watch out for loose wires though, they do chew on items. If you can't find him check any piles of clothes or your drawers (It's also advisable to run your hand over your bedspread before you lay down). Be sure to bathe them often since they can really get a musk smell going on. Watch your fingers if you give them a piece of pizza.
My brothers got one named Noodle and he's a blast to play with. Anytime he brings the little guy to the house my dog goes absolutely ape**** trying to get at the little rascal who hides behind the furniture.

Have it checked for diseases if you intend to keep it.
Other than that, lots of good advise above.

I named him Steve. We had many a good time together.

protip - washing them removes oils from their skin, when that happens, the glands go into overdrive and will make a ferret smell worse, bathe once a month (MAX), and use proper shampoo. Cleaning the cage more often than you would any other pet works better for keeping the smell down... Every 2 days i scoop, every week it comes out and gets scrubbed well..
for discipline, i'll simply hold my hand around/over their head, works great for getting them to stop nipping, they learn fast

On the topic, I saw a rat crossing the street last night, that's the first rat I've seen out in the open like that. This is high sec after all, does that mean the neighbourhood is going down the drain?
No I did not bring the rat home.

Edited by: Nomakai Delateriel on 15/12/2009 08:29:51 Edited by: Nomakai Delateriel on 15/12/2009 08:27:28 Remember that like all forms of martens it should be spayed/neutered before it becomes sexually mature (recommended is somewhere around 4 months old).
Female ferrets will go bat**** insane during breeding season and most likely die from hormonal overload unless it either breeds or gets a hormone shot. Male un-neutered ferrets are highly aggressive, stink (much more than usual) and have several unpleasant habits (like marking your entire house with foul smelling markings. Usually bought ferrets are already spayed, but you never know.
Otherwise ferrets are quite nice animals. We had a semi-wild one living near our house for a few years when I was a kid. He (or she) kept the rabbit population down and liked social contact. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost.
