Edited by: Drackpunk on 15/12/2009 01:48:30 Howdy all,
I recently experienced a similar dilemma when I went to install EVE.
(Background: For some reason many years ago, I went through a micro-managing phase in drive configuration, and thought it would be an awesome idea to create a partition of 10GB for windows XP, so as to keep it minimal, and assign all reference folders (Documents etc) to another drive, along with a dedicated swap file on a 3GB partition).
Now, to the problem at hand with limited C: drive space:
I think in the end, I found I could manually extract the installer to my own nominated directory, and I installed from that. All the installer is trying to do is unzip to a temporary file, where you then install where you like.
I have a few compression utilities installed (winRAR and 7zip) so it was probably one of them able to handle it.
So, to the OP.. chill man. Just use a compression utility to unpack the installer in your own location!! (obviously requires the full download first to be able to control this).
One day i'll reformat and re-partition my drives... one day... lol. Until then I kick myself for wanting to micromanage my drives.. Bring on the supermassive terrabyte C: drive, and uncontrolled install locations!!

Originally by: chinchinny chinchin I ran vista for two and a half years and have run the latest release candidate for 7 for the last six months and have never seen undo bloat. my current windows folder is only 13 gig atm. try maintaining your system better.
Select all the files on your primary hard drive, and check the reported file size. Now check how much space windows reports is free on your primary drive.
with Vista, after a couple of months i can almost guarentee that the difference in reported space will equate to between 10 and 40 gigs of magically "Disappeared" HDD space.
EDIT: And on seven right now after about 3 months of usage, i'm using only 50gigs of an 80gig partition and somehow, i only have 24gigs free. Thats a magical 6gigs thats not being reported.
In short? Don't talk about something you know nothing about.
1. Turn off system restore - you did this already but you may need to run disk cleanup to rid your drive of any old ones.
2. Reduce the amount of space used by the recycle bin (or turn it off compleatly). Default is 10% of drive space and the files are hidden from the user
3. If you have it (only on business and ultimate) turn off Shadow Copy. Depending on how many files you have and access on a daily basis this can account for a lot of missing space as the files themselves are hidden from the user.
4. Take a look at your backup settings. Backup files are also hidden from the user but still reported as used space.
If you are still missing space run some of the drive maintenance utilities included with windows IE disk cleanup or a defrag. I have also run into a few anti-virus programs that create there own little hidden file store to keep backups of important system files in.
Only as a last resort should you contact Harry Potter to locate your "magically disappeared HDD space"

It's not about maintaining my system. Winsxs is a collection of duplicate, versioned libraries that various programs use for compatibility. Removing files within is not recommended, unless you enjoy system installs. If you don't update windows, don't install any active x controls or update any drivers yeah it'll stay fairly small. But essentially with nearly every system change that happens a set of DLL's adn OCX's is created for that program to use and causes the winsxs folder to grow. So essentially good system maintenance actually has more potential to cause it to grow.

Should the devs/moderators move this to the Microsoft forums ?
Seems to be a PEBKAC issue with OS and system management not game related so much.

Change your Windoze profile to use D: (or other) as your default TEMP directory?
edit/Also run the 'Disk Cleanup'-tool to remove unneeded Restore Points (and/or lower the amount of space RP's can use) they usually take up quite much.
Disable hibernation mode, and use the disk cleanup as Chribba point out; removing the hibernation file shown there. This will free up RAM plus Swapfile disk space.

1) I used vista extensively and my C partition is 40GB, never had issues or used more than half of that 2) CCP clearly is to blame for the incompetence of their users and their crappy PC's.

I solved this problem years ago the easy way.
Step 1, buy cheap hard drive.
Step 2. put OS on C drive
Step 3. put games, pron, movies, and non OS stuff on the second partitioned D and E drives
Step 4 profit!!!
So what have we learned here? There is nothing wrong shelling out some extra cash for a dedicated game drive.

Do CCP hate people with low disc space? short answer is, yes long answer is, (lack of content warning! / wall o' text warning!)I feel obligated to say something about low disk space because, as the Talmud says, "Silence is akin to assent." The nitty-gritty of what I'm about to write is this: Only the impartial and unimpassioned mind will even consider that low disk space should clarify its point so people like you and me can tell what the heck it's talking about. Without clarification, low disk space's beliefs sound lofty and include some emotionally charged words but don't really seem to make any sense. Just because drossy sesquipedalianism exists and has for a long time, there is no reason for us to accept it from low disk space. Low disk space ignores the most basic ground rule of debate. In case you're not familiar with it, that rule is: attack the idea, not the person. When I first heard about low disk space's sophistries, I didn't know whether to laugh, because low disk space's sentiments are so longiloquent, or cry, because low disk space keeps saying that truth is merely a social construct. For some reason, low disk space's subalterns actually believe this nonsense. Okay, have you had enough of this letter? Good. Let's end it by reiterating that the dynamics of the situation are such that low disk space's ignorance is matched only by its arrogance. ----- this toon get's all it's conversation material from now on from: http://www.pakin.org/complaint

Eve takes up what, 6 or so GB of memory? If you can't spare that much space you need to suck it up and buy an external hard-drive and put some of your crap on it, I'm sure you can find a few good deals, with it being the holiday season and all. Go here and download SequoiaView, point it at your systems dir. now hover over all the big files in there.
Half of them are probably **** movies stored in a temp dir, those you can safely delete. (Or move to some more permanent directory on another drive for repeated viewing pleasure.)

Every operating system hates people with too little disk space. This hate is expressed by sabotaging all the programs you run under that OS. Naturally you've blamed an application instead of the Operating System (this is an old tradition among IT amateurs), but it's not entirely fair.
You need 10 GB free space on the drive your swap/hibernate files are stored.

First, games + Vista = fail. Even Microsoft recognized the facts in the end, as Win7 proves.
Second, I think I understand your annoyance...I miss having EVE in one nice monolithic folder I could move around at will and just recreate the shortcuts. I had batch files that would clean up temp files, start EVE in high priority etc etc..even load the cache into a ramdisk. Can't do that anymore.
As for why it's all about C:, blame Microsoft again. You can set system folders and files to be on other drives, but all the defaults are on c: and the places to change that are not all easily found.

Don't install your OS on an 850Mb POS 1980 learner HDD and buy a real HDD?
And if you have your OS on an expensive SSD and want to run games off your terrabyte disk drives then you're doing it backwards. You want the regularly read stuff (ie the game's art files) on the SSD. OS on a ****ty drive because the regularly used stuff is in memory already. Applications on the high-speed drive of awesome.

Probably the system restore, which can be deleted and a new one made that is smaller.
I have system restore forced to disabled :\
Every time you do a windows update, a resore point is made regardless of the system restore setting. Turn it on and then back off on occasion and watch the space free up like magic.

I can't say i've noticed any issues then again EVE isn't installed on my system drive which incidentally is 105GB to account for applications and updates along with temp files but i still have assloads of it spare, all my profile is stored externally to a USB HDD which also stores a lot of other stuff i would rather not lose and might need more portably, only thing not mirrored is appdata that still lives on C: because i CBA figuring out symbolic links and moving it, besides most of it can rot in hell :P
Never use a small HDD for the OS, i would never go below 80GB for the system drive as a minimum, but then again i run 2 internal 250's with an external 750 and a spare 100gb sitting inside the box from an older machine :P

In case the rest of the thread missed it, the OP is a troll. Even admits it was all a troll attempt on page 1. No need to continue arguing over it.
