So was to young to really understand the Babylon 5 series when they first got aired in '93 so I never was able to watch more then a couple of the first episodes. Since then a lot of water has flowed to the sea, to use an Icelandic saying, and I recently started watching the first series.
Now what I'm wondering is if the acting will get any better further down the line? The graphics and story is already rather good from the first episode but the acting is rather poor. Any Babylon 5 fans around?

First series is all slow story arc setup stuff. Second series is where it picks up and by the end of the third it's epic. Series 1 is pretty awful performance wise when looking back but it can be forgiven if you can get past the slow plodding progression as the later events in series 2 and 3 bring it all together nicely. Series 4 is also pretty good, but don't get me started on the abortion that is series 5 or the spin off. |

Thats good to hear since I've already acquired all the series + Movies
Oh and yeah I got the Crusader spin off series as a gift a few years ago and that pushed me further away from looking at Babylon 5 until now.

tbh the whole show veers between awful and brilliant and a lot of the acting is frequently terrible.

Who cares as long as they're not modulating phasers and reversing polarities?

seconded.
some of the recent shows have come close, but not scored. (McGyver in space, BSG for instance).
I *especially* like the timetravel episodes, and how they fit together, even though they were filmed years apart.

I only started watching them 2 years ago, I bought myself a boxed set, and watching season 1 I though I was going to regret it, as that season is very difficult to get through, but once you are finished the series, you will want to watch season 1 again to find stuff you missed first time round. There are things that happen early on and are referenced or have a direct correlation to what happened later on.
I would have to agree, one of the best sci-fi series around.

I quite liked the Babylon series. Would be the best one for me but can't decide between babylon and farscape. They are both pretty awsom. As mentioned first one is a bit slow, but it will get considerably more epic as the storyline progresses. Acting .. well dunno. Seemed okish enough for me.

lmao I loved that part. Overall the beginning of the entire series CAN be bland but it helps to understand the whole outlying of the story as a whole. I enjoyed it and I think it's in the top 5 as best sci-fi overall.

As an older *cough* player, I've seen a great deal of Sci-Fi shows in my time. However, Babylon 5 is my favourite of the lot. Sure, season 1 is a bit weak, the pilot movie has the worst actor in the world ever (the doctor), and the special effects are loking a bit dated, but overall I think the story is so well written, with characters that develop in so many ways (J'Karr for example), nothing can beat it.

I *JUST* finished watching all 5 seasons online (for free) about 2 weeks ago, from here.
Then *JUST TONIGHT*, the host (edit: of a radio show I was listening to) said they'll be back after the break with Bill Mumy. I was like, "Lenier?" Sure enough, I was shocked to learn that Lenier is Will Robinson from "Lost in Space" TV show!

Nothing is perfect - but - as a whole - B5 is the best Sci Fi Series Ever - hands down. Nothing else even comes close.
One of the reasons was that the show knew where it was going from day one.
Now ... there are some serious problems with the show, one of which was that the creator didn't think he was going to get a fifth year - so he crammed everything from the last two years into S4. That's the problem with S5. The show was over already.
Still, compared to anything else - as a whole - it is superb.
All the other series out there - had a basic idea of what they were going to do and then just played it by ear as things went.
With B5 you get to see the characters develop over the course of the series - which is why S1 is so important. Before things start to happen - you've gotten to know the characters fairly well under "normal" circumstances. You see them as the "people" they are. (Obviously half of them are aliens so they aren't "people" but ... you get my point).
Once things do start to happen - you understand these characters and their motivations and to some degree care about them.
Also, there's a mystery to the series that you slowly figure out. With most shows - there is no mystery, there is nothing to figure out. The thing is - the characters were all part of something larger than themselves, so that while you got to know them fairly well - THEY - weren't the focus of the story - what they were doing was. The story was what mattered.
With BSG - the people who made the series lied to us ... saying that they were never going to find Earth - when in fact they ended up finding not one but two earths. Of course they may not have been lying when they said it as they may not have had any idea where they were going. The acting and special effects in BSG were great but ... it was "Lost" in space before SG:U copied the idea. I got so sick of the squabbling between the characters I gave up on the show. It sucked. Despite great performances by the actors - it sucked. I ended up watching the rest of it after missing a few episodes just to see what was going to happen - but - that's the reason the show didn't even have reruns. People watched to find out what was going to happen - and once they did had little interest in watching it again.
With all the Trek series - *sigh* - there was this focus on the crew. This developed slowly with the first series but with all that followed it that focus was designed into the show. None of them were really terrible ... except Voyager but none of them were really great either. The first series with Kirk was great - because nothing like that had ever been done before. Looking back, a lot of it is actually kind of cheesy but *shrug* compared to the original "Lost In Space" ... it was pretty good.
SG:SG-1 succeeded because of the actors and their characters. I can still watch old SG-1 episodes because the actors/characters were enjoyable to watch. The same could not be said for most of SG:Atlantis and the less said about SG:U the better ...
So - what made B5 the best sci fi show ever - was the writing. The creator knew where he was going and how the series would end when he started - so it is a coherent whole, not just a bunch of episodes strung together until the ratings went bad - as are most other series.
It wasn't that just one episode or one season had a coherent plot - it's that the entire series had a coherent plot - and that - is what makes it the best Sci Fi show ever. I can't think of a single other TV series that did that. There may be one - but I can't think of it. Here, I'm not counting min-series as there are a number of those which are superb as well. Lonesome Dove, Band of Brothers, Taken and I'm sure a number of others I've forgotten. But no other regular, multi-year series had that coherence that B5 had.
Now - part of the problem with everything related to it that came afterward - was that it had to follow B5 and couldn't.

B5 was good fun. The overall arc and story was well done but the writing and dialogue... When it was good it was pretty good but when it was bad it was really truly awful, I mean wanting to vomit awful.

**SPOILER**
It's especially good when he actually gets to do this.
I also enjoyed Sheridan's apology.... I am sorry your people were stupid enough to fire on my station. I am also sorry I had ot blow the mall to hell.
Aha, such temerity!
To agree with the point above, yes the time travel episode blew me away with how they had set it up during those season one episodes (the Babylon 4 episode in season one plus the developing story around Sinclair).
Sometimes the acting was a bit iffy, but in general I thought it was good... that said, I enjoyed watching season one. Admittedly season two etc were much better. As for season five, well the studio pulled the rug at season four so things were being tied up.
Then another studio stepped in to support season five but unfortunately they'd already rushed the war with Earth.
I have a small claim to fame here too At about the end of season three or the start of season four, I emailed JMS (the writer). I generlaly kissed his arse about how good B5 was but also asked if he could one day envisage humanity evolving into noncorporeal beings like the Vorlon's and generally meddle with other younger races.
Bear in mind that at this point, Sleeping in Light (the final episode) had already been produced as the studio had pulled the plug and was going to be aired as the finale to the season four.
However then a season five came about... so a new season four finale was required. What happened at the very end of new season four finale? Well we see a human being turn around, change into a ball of energy and flow into a very vorlonesque encounter suit.
Meh, I truely wish I still had that email Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |

One of my favourite episodes is the one where Londo and G'Kar get stuck in a lift together.
Both high-up ambassadors of two respective alien races.
One race are long time ensalvers of the other, on top of which they also just recently decimated the others homeworld...
...and the two leaders get stuck in a lift together for the entire episode.
Freaking awesome.
