Iraq insurgents hack into US Drones
I knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. True that they didn't get control of the aircraft and only were able to see the drone's video feed, but it just goes to show you that it could be possible that one day they may be able to hack the drones themselves. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

As mr univserse once said - you cant stop the signal. The signal is broadcaasted from the drone, I can only assume omni-directionally. Once the signal is being transmitted... its only a matter of collecting it. eventually, you can crack whatever they are using to encrypt it..
From what it sounds, they didnt even encrypt the outgoing video feed. Lol

Proper decryption would solve this issue. Proper meaning that the decryption takes longer to crack than the interval it is changed. Hell, isn't that basic military tactic? --------

That's very embarrassing. What moron made the decision to use an unencrypted video signal? It's military hardware, common sense says you encrypt data coming out of it.
Let's hope they learn from this. ____________________

Aggreed. Wether or not it was encrypted, it is another shinning example of the US military underestimating their current targets.

As far as I know, it's a fairly trivial matter to use encryption that is impossible to crack in any reasonable time frame. So yes, while you may brute force your way through the encryption by having computers crunch it for a century, it's not going to win you any wars.

Gear is made by the lowest agreeable bidder, and that guy does just the stuff you specify he should be doing (or, more likely, not even that much if he can get away with it). I guess you get what you pay AND CHECK for - you didn't specifically ask for encryption nor check for security issues, you got no encryption and no security.

Wait? There are military applications these days that doesn't use encryption and frequency hopping? Major failure (which I guess is a bit lower in rank than General Failure). I know that engineers are usually more focused on "getting it to work" than to "prevent all applications than this very specific one", but this is basic. Ok, so a frequency hopping and encrypted radio would probably add ten thousand dollars to the cost of the unit, but really. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. Stuff like this just shows you how much of this "war on terror" is fear mongering and war waging for appearances. If we were fighting China we would never take such stupid chances, but when it is a "fake" war manufactured by politicians to make us afraid of an enemy that they know/perceive is not really a threat they behave in a very sloppy manner.
I feel very badly for the civilians and soldiers who are dying to win elections.

Shows you how stupid the military is.
The bands that the drones operate on is well known.
In America, we tend to use a lot of what is called "American Exceptionalism".
This used to be all about living up to standards for human rights and liberty. But now, it's all about thinking that anybody who is not American is automatically stupid.
Hence the reason why something like Drone video feeds not being encrypted. Why, those stupid backwards rag heads are too stupid to even know what a video feed is. We Americans are shmart. No need to encrypt the feed. Those people know know how to ride camels and shoot AK-47s that the Russians built.
Hubris is dangerous.
My solution: end these wars, bring all forces home.
Yeah I know. We killed the last president to try that (Kennedy).
I can dream.

I can not remember the position of the indivdual I will paraphrase from ABC nightly news, but I got a laugh.
[paraphrase]At the time, 10 plus years ago, we did not have a whole lot of money, so we built this system (the video transmission system) from what we had leftover on the shelves.[/paraphrase]
So you mean you have not had the funds to go back and rework it or at least change the programming so as an encryption program would work effectively?
You have to be kidding me? /redundant question

Edited by: Marz Ghola on 18/12/2009 08:00:48 Big deal, some equipment is fielded even in a prototype stage.
In 8 years active army, I have seen complete trash fielded. Then again during my deployments, I have worked with other nations armies and they complain of the same thing.
All armies of all nations have done it. History proves it.

Oh, you are.
You knew that the drones were sending unencrypted video feeds since the NATO intervention in Bosnia.
Now I understand the Serbs were too busy engaging in acts of genocide to notice this or do anything about it, but to think that the Afghans and Iraqis would be too stupid to notice or wouldn't have the resources to exploit it?
Hello!?
They have had over 10 years to fix this!

don't worry. it's not your army, but who leads it.
surely that your average army grunt might actually be a nice person to talk to, as a civilian, as it might be every american, but I can't say the same of your leadership. ---

Old men who probably don't own computers no doubt.
Thankfully the drone wasn't taken complete control of and given the order to fire upon civilians or our own servicemen, hopefully we will learn from this mistake and put some decent encryption on these things.

Actually this just made me laugh think of it.
1. This is a video of you leaving a building seconds before the first hellfire misile hits and you trying to drive away.
Quickly followed by video number 2. Your vehicle discovering the drone carries more than one missile.
Its highly time senstive video, but its not the control signal. ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |
