so I was uninstalling WoW today and at the end I get: "c:\games could not be deleted"... huh?
this is problematic for three reasons: 1: I have over 50gb of games, and more importantly, GAMESAVEFILES in c:\games... 2: I created c:\games before installing WoW (I know this because the first game I installed was EVE. 3: what if I'd installed it where it wanted me to.. c:\program files
two thoughts come to mind: WoW wanted to exact revenge on me for uninstalling it... and it's actually a good thing that its programmers are crap. a good programmer would have succeeded.
now, for stealing half a minute of your time, and as a reward for making it through the whole post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9YtJC-Kd8&fmt=18

They're simply making sure that after uninstalling the game won't leave any residual empty catalogs. If the catalog had been empty it would have been removed. Since it wasn't it remains.
An error message doesn't always mean that things aren't working as they're supposed to. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

don't try to destroy a perfectly fine indignation by being all logical.

1. Backups 2. Why install in C:\games ? 3. You probably installed WoW in C:\games, rather than a subdir of C:\games 4. The uninstaller probably couldn't delete the directly because it wasn't empty. This indicates that your stuff is still there and the installer deleted only files it was supposed to delete. This is what every normal installer would do (except you don't always get a warning if a directory wasn't deleted). 5. Keep your savegames and other data in "My Documents". Uninstallers normally don't mess with it. 6. If you have to use custom directory structures (why??), keep installed software separate from data. 7. You did make backups, didn't you?
1. Don't install WoW 2. Don't install WoW 3. Don't install WoW 4. Don't install WoW 5. Don't install WoW 6. Don't install WoW 7. Don't install WoW

for some reason, I feel the need to defend myself... ah well. I've had a lot of fun in WoW over the years. there. I said it. Can't say it's much fun now though, only reason to keep playing was the guild, but I can keep in touch with them through other means... so uninstalled it is.
As for the uninstaller: The thing that annoyed me was that it tried. It's not up to IT to decide what should and should not be on my computer. if I had a folder called Games on my HD before WoW was installed, it's not up to it to remove it. (once had a game that worked this way in an odd way. I told it to install in c:\games\******** it was the first game I installed. when I uninstalled it, it removed itself, and the c:\games folder... and everything else in it. seeing another game trying to do as inane a thing as that is *very* annoying, as it brings back memories of trying to salvage 500 megabytes of data in DOS through undelete.exe.
I'd be perfectly happy if all it did was remove all the stuff in the registry and other deep parts of window's anatomy (which it probably HASN'T) but leave it to ME to delete the actual folders.

2: For clarity. all programs in c:\program, all games in c:\games. 3: no. 4: missing the point (see above). 5: not all games use "My Documents", and I'm not gonna do backups every single time I've played a game. 6: there is no six. 7: yeah, but again, missing the point.
