I ran across this old post while looking for something else. I had to chuckle at how similar it was to what is going on in EVE now. Not much has changed in Fountain over the last 6 years.

Hope you all have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Ahhh, memories
It will be nice when the lag level gets back to pre-Dominion levels, but it's pretty much a guarantee that Eve players will continue to stretch the boundary on what the server is capable of. Btw, anyone else notice that this actually harkens back to the days when a Molle post wasn't an automatic 10 page thread?

Quote: If that's the case, then that is fine by me.
So much confusion last night, and I'll freely admit that.
We were contacted by some CEO in Evol asking for a truce, they just wanted to get stuff out of YZ. This wouldn't have been a problem but their fleet was rigged for battle, and numbered between 50-60 total ships, estimated 40 being battleships. A very dangerous fleet! Plus it was largely populated with veteran PvP'rs.
Spies in both the FA and elsewhere told us that the force coming down was actually a mixed bag of Evolution, former NVA, and Stain fleets. They were coming down to engage, and the whole "we need to get stuff out" was just a ruse to get in system without getting ganked at the gate.
Inside the combined pirate alliance, there was a general schism as there were those who wanted to respect that Evolution was going to be true to their word, and we should let them pass. Others felt (as I did), that if we let Evolution and friends into YZ and then they renegged on their word, we'd never be able to get them out.
The decision was finally made when their vast fleet was passing through IR... a scout saw a bladerunner in their corp, and that there was friendly banter in local between the Evolution fleet and FA forces in system.
So, the division within the pirate alliance ended as abruptly as it had began, and we resolved to fight to prevent "re-inforcements" from reaching the FA.
However, now if what Evolution was saying was true, then the only thing I can deduce is our spies mislead us.
Also, for those who lost ships, I'd imagine a petition would be in order. A GM was there, saying they would be "lenient" when resolving petitions.
One final note, letting Evolution leave serves us too. We can clearly see that the YZ node of the server can't handle that number of ships. And if Evolution stays, you can probably count on CA coming to YZ too... which would only put further strain on that node, and as the GM warned last night, potentially bring the whole game down...not to mention that under the conditions like last night, combat just isn't fun.
Keep us posted on events. This games has more twists, curves, and rolls of fat than Anna Nichole Smith.... (end quote)
For those of us who joined in 08 and later, this post is epic. It really shows what eve used to be like. Wonderful if you really think about everything that CCP has done. Thank you everyone for such an epic game. Have a good holiday everyone.

We had 100v100 fights back during the SA/CA war and they were lag free and I had an athlon xp 2000 half gig ram and gforce4 mx420 and this was late 03/early 04
eve is a whole different monster now. It took a month to get my first stabber and if you lost your bs it was a few months before you could replace it. We had torp kessies, cavalry ravens, invincible scorps,Bring back those days! People gave a **** when they lost a ship

What lag used to be like is completely irrelevant. The game can't handle the stress of what is currently the standard for territory capturing battles of any meaningful size. Even battles of 400 combined, which is not uncommon and entirely promoted by in game mechanics, last 4 hours or more when they should really last 30 minutes. That is neither playable, nor fun, but fleet battles are basically the only thing in Eve that are fun (assuming they barely plod along). Let's not do the usual Eve song and dance where you convince each other that things are grand and talk about how elite Eve players are compared to everyone that actually is able to play the games they have purchased.

The spies were right in some way.
history lesson :
This days CA disbanded and Shinra members were ordered to go to Vezila. Also in the system are BoB forces were collecting their ships coming from the north. We were same station like RKK and neighbour system were ATUK. There this thing happend. But - the invasion was planned before this.^^
Shinra did the first strike against Period Base and have taken the station easily. Then FA came down to PB with a 100+ fleet and engaged a 30 man Shinra gang. Result : Shinra lost 3 BSs and FA 46 BSs. Only Finfleet (this time in FA) tried to fight us after this masscre. Some days later BoB invaded Delve. Only [G] tried to help FA, but Delve was more and more in the hand of BoB.
This end in this fight. FA lost all in the next weeks after this.
Yes - fight with more then 100 ppl was possible this days.

No arguement from me on that Max.
Tbh, a battle that killed multiple titans should have practically been a media event under other circumstances, but just doesn't work like that anymore. We're in need of a Seleene replacement for battle reports... lag or not, it is big news.
Still, IT being relatively quiet on the forums (wether for a loss or a win), seems to be working in their favor for the lack of forum ammo available. Foes haven't apparently done near as well in this regard, even victory threads have bit them in the ass.
