Research, invention, manufacturing, exploration so many things! I'm lost. I want to follow a pure science path, where should I start? Thanks

It depends on your skills. From that I understand invention is fairly resource and skill intensive. To start with you should look at manufacturing either cheep items were there is demand, so away from the market hubs or small quantities of high value equipment like cruser and battleships.
To do this you are going to need to study the market for both items to product and mineral costs. Then either buy a BPC (blue print copy) or cheep BPO with research.
Once you have a steady isk flow you can start skilling up for either tech2 production or invention or exploration, you will probably need combat skills for exploration as you will need to kill the NPC's that guard the loot.
It also worth training at least a few levels in racial industrial so you can haul good or materials around in reasonable quantities to start with. It also worth running missions for the standings to reduce taxes and if you plan to stay in empire for faction standings to place a POS so you have your own labs, this is much later down the line.
Being in a Combat corp or a production corp would help. The combat (NPC/PVP) corp will want to dispose of unneeded loot (meld down for min if generic tech1) and would require a steady supply of items like drones and ammo. The production corp could help you though the process more as there would be members who have similar aims to talk to. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

You'll have to find a way to get yourself some initial capital.

I used to be critical of the MD regulars and others who would simply tell you to go read the forum posts - in an all too blunt manner. However, I'm starting to understand them now. Frankly, if you can't do the research to read at least the most recent pages of the forum, then you're going to find manufacturing/research/invention very difficult.
Anyhow, the really important thing is to find out if you like it first. It is an expensive, time consuming, logistics intensive, micro-managing part of the game. Please see this thread that discusses some of the issues. Dip your toes in the water before diving in.
Good luck. In all sincerity - if reading a few pages of forum posts is too tedious, then this part of the game isn't for you.
