So I'm in the mood for what my topic suggests. And I have some extra MS points on my xbox, so... what would you recommend? They don't have a huge selection and I've watched Serenity... sort of mediocre. Suggestions?

Sorry :/ I just didn't find it that exciting. A space movie that is one of my favorites would be Event Horizon.

I too totally love Event Horizon ... even tho it's a blend of horror/sci fi.
If you like dark sci-fi flicks, depends if you think you are a serious viewer or just a guy that wants to spend an evening watching fun and sometimes cheesy flicks.
I really like old 70s and 80s sci fi movies and some of the recent ones (in no relative order) check out
Dune Brain Damage (it's like a little Alien), From Beyond, Dark City , Forbidden Planet, Donnie Darko, Logan's Run, invasion of the Body Snatchers, Children of Men, Equilibrium, Dark Star
And an honorable mention to Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension<--
Check out if you like the original Heavy Metal Movie ... very nice soundtrack and good watch if you into the genre.
Not all Sci-Fi movies need to be omgwtf background lore awesomeness of detail to be good, I really hate the star trek films, honeslty thinking the good one besides Wrath of khan was the new Star Trek with Sylar as Spock
Also the late 70s and 80s were a cornucopia of lol sci fi films that are good to watch just to have fun ---

I liked "soldier" with Kurt Russell
It was mediocre. Even so, I related to his plight somewhat.

There's a distinct lack of "Blade Runner" on this thread.

Indeed. I was re-watching not long ago "Outland", that '81 movie with Sean Connery on a mining station in a Jupiter moon, and while it isn't particularly great in itself, it made me all nostalgic of sci-fi / fantasy movies back then, and the special retro "feel" they had.
Whereas nowadays many directors seem hell-bent on cramming as much stuff on-screen as possible, getting all fancy with camera work and so forth - almost as if they were directing MTV videos - personally I appreciate how comparatively slower paced movies were back then: in "Outland" for instance, there are whole sequences where nothing much seems to be going on, with Sean Connery just pensively staring into empty space, superbly building up *atmosphere* without resorting to gimmickry.
Speaking of Sean Connery and early '80s sci-fi, "Time Bandits" is a movie I grew up watching over and over again. And another gem by the brilliantly strange writer / director Terry Gilliam: "Brazil".

Edited by: Abdiesus on 26/12/2009 23:08:55 If you've not yet watched the Final Cut of Blade Runner, it's worthwhile. There's not a vast difference in terms of material in any of the versions, but the Final Cut is a much more atmospheric movie.
If you want something dark, but a little heavier on the philosophical side of sci-fi, I heartily recommend Gattaca, some very interesting themes regarding the consequences of developing genetic manipulation etc, without straying into the "OMG ZOMBOCALYPSE!" zone as so many "negative" sci-fi movies do.
EDIT: Oh yes, and for recent movies with more of that slower, emotionally charged feel that the above poster refers to, check out Moon. It's hard to discuss the plot without huge spoilers, but it's well worth watching, with an intriguing plot and excellent acting.

I read about Moon months ago as they were showing it on a film festival somewhere in my country, and I've been very much looking forward to it since. Also, Sam Rockwell is one of my favourite actors. I haven't seen it at the DVD stores around here, but I just checked and they already have the Blueray edition on Amazon

I support this triumvirate of Sci-Fi awesome.
Silent Running is also a favourite of mine. Kind of MOON's mother film, and rather relevant to today tho it's thirty years old or so.

The good: It has great visuals and the part with HAL9000 is entertaining classic sci-fi. That part I can recommend.
The bad: Full of boring and pointless visual filler where the story doesn't progress. You can skip most of the movie and not miss anything of any importance. I'm not exaggerating this claim in the least. If you are going to watch it, either prepare to be bored or to skip through large parts of it.

I started it, saw the stone, whatever it's called, saw the stone some more and in different angles, more of the stone and then FFW... The End. Most overrated sci-fi of all times.

Sunshine. Ignore the non-nonsensical story premise, and the random slasher-movie bit about 3/4 of the way through.
Also, you want this.

Sunshine is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It mixes just about every possible genre into one film, mostly at the final part. It could have been good, except that it made absolutely no sense from a scientific standpoint (e.g. we can restart a star, but we have to move at a few km/s to get there and we don't have artificial gravity or [if I remember] fusion power). And then we'll steal the good part from 2001 and turn it into Event Horizon.
Bad. Bad. Bad.
And speaking of 2001, you should read the book. It's much better than the film, which suffered from budget problems, but it did make HAL 9000 even more awesome.

The book itself is interesting. Unfortunately the movie cannot really convey the thoughts of the main character. There's a lot going on during the "boring" scenes.
The same probably applies to Stalker, which has an astonishingly cool story. I liked the movie but the book was better.

You have to understand what Kubric tried to do, the book has too much info, and he tried to depict certain things visually ...

Buckaroo Banzai is the best movie that no one talks about. It's a must see, ****, I tried to name my character after Buckaroo Banzai, but ofc, it was already taken when I first began the game. And I will always have a soft spot for Heavy Metal. One, the soundtrack is the perfect representation of late 70's/early 80's rock. Two, I have always read heavy Metal magazine and grew up with it.

Same here with Buckaroo and Heavy Metal, up to this day I still buy it when I see it on a stand. Best damn mag worth reading out there.
I'm still amazed people that grew up in the 80s hardly know about the existence of this scifi gem
Buckaroo Banzai: You remind me of someone I once knew. Penny Priddy: Was she... very beautiful? Buckaroo Banzai: She was... Queen of the Netherlands

I can't do anything but agree 100% on this.
Movies like Silent Running, Logan's Run, The Original Planet of the Apes ... they way Sci-Fi is done these days reminds me more of a flashy ps3 game than an actual movie.
Brazil was a poorly understood film in the day, and many many gems of the era lie buried amidst ignorance and deceit. I'm amazed some of the recent sci fi films are remakes of old ones. Where has creativity gone? At this rate well prolly see a rebranded Metropolis/Forbidden Planet/war of the worlds/last man on earth/the day the earth stood still ... oh wait ... meh
Even the Twilight Zone had decent episodes worth making full blown sci-fi movies. And most of those ideas lie in a vault rehashed for straight to dvd low budget films that barely sc**** the fullness of the ideas.
