So I've been away from the game a while, and when I was actively playing, it was more or less only to log in and keep my skills going. So I'm pretty much a well skilled, old, noob...
Quick version, I got my ass handed to me in a Rokh by an AF. My shield was more or less one-shot, and the whole process too maybe 2min.
So, what was it that one-shot my shield? How was I able to be killed so fast?
My take away from this, is that I have a whole new interest in PVP (and in the game).

Edited by: Kora Zilesti on 29/12/2009 17:04:44 An AF couldn't one-shot a Rokh's shield if the Rokh pilot had shell skills and the AF had maxxed-volley artillery (or lasers). I'd put my money on the idea that it couldn't even be 3 or 4-shot. Something's wrong here.

It struck me as odd as well... I heard a high-pitched squeal, and watched my shields drop to nothing. A few moments later, my armor was around 75%, then 50%, then gone.
Is there a combat log of some sort I can view?

Under your player tab in-game there should be a combat log, it will list your attackers, maybe there was another a long ways off sniping ya? ... |

Found it - looks like it was a Heavy Assault Ship, not an AF. Ah well... live and learn.

Let me start off by saying I'm by no means a PVP god, infact my battle clinic stats are almost woeful.
However - there are one or two immediate things you can do that will aid you in improving your skills.
Firstly - read everything you can. There are guides out there, written by other players and are freely available. Do a Google search for Wensley's Rifter Guide for a good start. Knowing the theory behind PVP is very important.
http://www.rifterdrifter.com/rifter-pvp-guide/
Secondly - read some more. Skira Ranos wrote a guide called The Beginner's Guide to Piracy which is widely regarded as one of the staple guides for PVP in EVE. Personally the thing I gained from most was the insight about the use of the in-game Overview Tab. A very well rounded guide.

Thirdly - specialize. As useful as a Jack of All Trades is, he is a master of none. This can be quite a hard thing to commit to, esp early on in the game but you'll be better off in the long run by training deeply in one area before cross training between races/weapon systems/tanking systems.
The penultimate point is try to find an example of what you are trying to achieve first. On brilliant resource for this is the "My Eve" section of the Eve-O Forums. At the moment there is a large trend for making and posting solo and small gang pvp vids - some of them are good, some of them are excellent, all of them are examples of what and what not do to in PVP situations. One notable example is a character called Kil2. He demonstrates fights that are against the odds, fights outnumbered and more to the point, has provided audio-commentary to these examples.
http://www.eve-search.com/thread/1065858/page/1
The fifth and final point will be backed up by Kil2, Wensley and Skira - Practice makes Perfect. Make sure you're flying something that you can easily replace/you don't mind losing, get out there join a good pvp corp and try and find some fights.

Rokh's are all about shield, so it's curious that you say yours was lost so quickly.
1: did you have shield mods in your midslots? 2: if active, were they turned on? 3: what level of Caldari Battleship do you have (since this gives a bonus to your resistances)?
If you have no EM resists its possible that a laser ship cut through you pretty quick I guess, generally for pvp you equalise your resists as much as possible so that you have no weakpoints, but a reasonably buffered rokh should last a little while (you'd die eventually though).

I endorse this thread.
The more people who think AB AFs are a good idea leads to more lolkills for the rest of us. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

If you actually have read the whole thread, you'd note that he corrected himself, learning it was a HAC instead of a AF.

Edited by: Sean Faust on 31/12/2009 11:38:04 The only thing I can think of that would have allowed an AF to drop a Rokh's shields quickly is if he had fighters assigned. If that wasn't the case, then there is NO WAY POSSIBLE for an AF that puts out a piddly little 300 DPS max to one-volley the shields of any battleship, even a Megathron (which has crap for shields cause it was designed to be armor tanked.)
That being said, in a BS, your only defenses against smaller ships such as AFs are:
Neuts Warrior II Drones Smartbombs (only if theyre close range ones)
If you don't have some of these fitted to your ship then an AF (or even T1 frigate pilot) WILL, over time, be able to kill you simply because their small signature radius makes them immune to the damage your guns deal.
HACs (what actually killed you) are a much nastier beast alltogether. While I still can't see one one-volleying a battleship's shields, they can definitely make short of one who is unprepared to deal with smaller ships.
It is important to understand that, with mechanics such as signature radius in the game, you face a SEVERE PENALTY when trying to engage ships of a smaller class than what you're currently in. The mods I mentioned above are the only ways you have of trying to deal with that penalty. If you don't have those fitted, the only thing you can do is pray that they're not putting out enough DPS to break your tank (which is feasible if you're in a BS that's fitted properly), or that you have friends nearby.
