Reading the thread on decoy ships got me thinking... always a bad idea at 11am before enough coffee :)
Anyway, I'd like to see Q ships - basically look like a freighter but packing a punch.
Would require freighter skill still to fly and bs v and would not be cheap but would make freighter ganking alot more interesting...
Stats would be for a combat ship so the hold would only be 30,000 - still useful but not as useful. Drone bay would be significant - 15 to 20 heavy drones.

would it look like a normal freighter/cargo ship? what would the info box read (i.e. would it tell attackers it was a Q ship or just a normal cargo vessel?
The problem is that people would take it in the wrong way and just go out PvPing with it, ganking others. The idea has been discussed loads but implementing it is about as hard as making space whales (another quite awesome idea i should add)

Edited by: Arimus Darkhart on 02/01/2010 13:05:43 It would show as a normal freighter until you activate the weapons - kind of like the old ww2 Q-ships which looked like a normal freighter until they chose to reveal themselves...
On revealing itself until the weapons are deactivated it would be on scanners et al as q-ship - on hiding weapons back to the freighter signature of its parent hull.
Weapon activation would need to be a zero-cap cost operation - I imagine the logic would be something like each weapon point has its own perma-cap store for onlining. Once onlined the weapons can't be offlined for a period (until their cap stores are recharged).
Maybe make it level based...
Q-Ship skill: 5% reduction in weapon minimum duration per level, 5% bonus to weapon damage per level. 10% bonus to structure hp per level. Rank 12 or so skill. These are not meant to be easy to kill with your usual gang so would use the freighter's normal cargo room to become extra tank in effect.
These would not be cheap (in fact bloody expensive for what is effectively an itty V crossed with a heavily tanked BS) ships but would be useful to break blockades - send a q ship convoy through just ahead of a freighter convoy (especially now IHUB's are freighter only movement).
Low slots and mid slots would be limited as the main tank would be structural - talking ALOT of hp in the hull, and just reasonable hp in the arm/shield depending on race.
Probably scaled to fit BS sized weapons and below.
Also could not fit tackle (scram/web/etc) to prevent solo ganking in them.
By an accord between Concord and the manufacturers these ships have a weapons safe mode which prevents activation in empire in all situations other than self defence (You must be engaged before you can arm and fire).

Q-ships are always an interesting idea. Maybe the solution is fairly simple. Take a freighter, cut it cargo hold in half to make room for the surprises.
Give it a couple of high slots, mids and lows. Give it bonuses like: 99% reduction in fitting battleship grade weapons. 99% reduction in fitting passive targeter's A 500% increase in weapon cycle time (so it can only really Alpha strike its target for a lot of damage and not stand up to a long fight. Possibly a weapon damage bonus to give a chance. So it can be reasonably fitted but not to make a good PVP or PVE ship. By giving it the bonuses CCP can keep the power grid and CPU low for balance.
Keep or increase the price tag and keep the rest of the stats the same.
Another option would be a covert carrier. Convert half the cargo space to drone bay and allow it to use fighters (but not delegate them). Would be a nasty surprise to attack a freighter at a hi sec gate and suddenly have 5 fighters attacking you.
One other option, allow normal freighters to lunch a specially modified set of sentry drones (but not be able to recover them), that have a large Alpha strike. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Why not have a module that can be fitted on a ship, that makes it appear (at distance) as a chosen or certain type of (maybe determined from actual) ship, only to be something else when you are in the vicinity of it? (You could fish with all kinds of ships, not just freighters.)
