There are rumours that for some people the sound actually works ... so I am on a quest to assemble and tweak a rig that someday may produce consistent sound effects in EVE ( no crackling sounds and turrets and launchers and other effects that consistly work as in pre-aprocrypha ). This is aside from the recent malfunctioning jukebox and the "feature" of sound effects being relative to distance.
So far I have tested the following :
- Updated everything ( Bios, Windows, Drivers, etc ) - Removed EVE Online including cache and settings. - Completely reinstalled OS - And thus also completely reinstalled EVE - Tried Windows XP, Vista, 7 - Disabled advanced, non-essential, features for X-FI ( both on the creative software as the XP and Win7 settings ).
- Tried following soundcards :
Onboard Soundmax HD Logitech USB headset Soundblaster X-fi music Soundblaster X-fi gamer
- In combination with following systems :
Asus Striker II Extreme mobo nForce 790i Core2Quad Q9550 Gefore GTX285 1GB Raptors in Raid-0
MSI mobo nForce 4 AMD Athlon X2 Ati Radeon x1900gt
Asus Striker Extreme mobo nForce 680i Qore2Quad 6600 Geforce 8800GTS 512MB
Asus P5Q Motherboard Intel P45 Chipset Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 and Q9550 Asus Radeon 4770 512MB
This is all stuff that does not work ( for me ), so if anyone could post something that does work it would be nice.
Thanks in advance.

Some people claimed that in the days of pre-Apocrypha, there were some rudimentary but functional sound effects, and even now there are rumours of people hearing sound effects and even music, but you can't always believe what you hear or don't hear ...

I would question the claims of anyone who says that the sound in this game works perfectly for them. I really would.
Actually I wouldn't question it. I'd flat out not believe it.
People make claims like that until you actually check it out, then you realize that, well, actually half the turrets firing can't be heard over the sound of their invulnerability field hum and they just didn't notice, and oh yeah that gate crackling is actually there on some gates, and oh yeah i actually CAN still hear the ship flying in space even though it's actually docked and i should be hearing station sounds, etc.
These problems are fairly consistent across systems, and I've heard people claiming they don't notice any bugs in eve for years. Yeah, right.

Okay but seriously, I am talking about the situation pre-Apocrypha, where you had 95% of the time functional sound effects, where turrets fired consistantly, you could hear your other mods, with no mentionable crackling or popping issues.
Is it really broken for everyone? Or is there still hope that I can fix it myself?

Sounds in eve need a massive overhaul, if not a whole new expansion pack just for that kind of improvement
not that it is a necessity, but it is embarassing for a game of Eve's caliber to lack in that department.

The lack of sound (& turret visuals in some cases) in this game really kills the whole immersive experience.

Never had any problems with my onboard soundcard (realtek hd audio, nothing special).
The only thing broken with EVE sound for me is the fact that I can't disable those super extremely wtf station sounds without turning off all world-sounds. -

I just turned on sound for five minutes and I heard stuff so it must be fine and you're just overreacting. Now CCP, go back to working on stuff I care about since the sound is working fine (or rather I don't care about the actual problems since, I don't listen to sound at all, and since I don't care it's not important).
Did I do it right?
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

A corpie of mine told me, when I was grumbling about my own sound, that his sound was working flawlessly. So the next time I was over at his place I checked and, quelle surprise, he was having the same issues everyone else is but he hadn't really noticed. I attribute this to the fact that he cranks the background tunes into the foreground when he plays.
It might also be because he's strictly a miner. Or maybe he's just thick... but I repeat myself. </rimshot>

The only issues I have with sound (and my 5.1 setup works just fine on everything else) is with Shield Hardeners pretty much blocking out any other FX sounds and that rapid fire weapons don't use the sound right for each individual shot.
In the previous sound engine, I had a funny Ferox fit with 6 electron blasters and 3 mag stabs, which in sequence fired very rapidly and each individual shot was heard just fine. In the new one I could hear less than a third of the shots fired. It's been improved a bit, but rapid fire shots still don't work 100%, which is sad considering the awesomeness of rapid fire with the right audio.

Edited by: CyberGh0st on 04/01/2010 21:36:07 Hmm, okay, so perhaps it is only Artillery related ...
To describe the biggest problem I have atm is that when firing my Artillery after a minute or 2 nearly all artillery and missile sound effects are gone, together with enemy incomming fire.
This is driving me nuts now, especially as there are so many that can hear all effects ... and I tried this with many computer systems and sound cards.

omg, seems that I only have it when zoomed in on my ship, then the sensor booster and tracking computer somehow overwrite my arties and launchers, but only after a few minutes.
So just another side affect of the new ( since Apoc ) positional sound "feature" I guess.
I really hope CCP implements an option to turn off positional sound.
edit : There are still the occasional cracks and pops, but I guess I can live with that until the next sound "improvement" :p

Im going to assume the OP did not change their speakers because sound works for everything else but eve.
Asus P5E3 mobo Xi-Fi Fatalaty soundcard Nvidia x285 Raptor 140gig for windows/games + 1TB for everything else 4gig Ram Works both on Vista 64 and Window's 7
I did have some instances where sound would not turn on when i ticked it in the options screen. Closing and Opening eve again fixed the issue. Have you tried re-downloading & reinstalling eve from scratch incase something borked with your copy?

if you're using non-onboard sound - do you have the onboard sound disabled in the bios incase eve is stupid and is sending sound to that?
its hella weird its not working for you on multiple pc's tho o_O
Are the language settings in eve set to English? (incase its a problem derrived by language settings?)

Yes, onboard sound is disabled in bios atm.
Running everything in English.
Reread my OP, I have updated it with some new findings.

Edited by: Nawt Ovarpwiced on 04/01/2010 23:31:13 ok, so its working "sort of" but failing, if its doing the same thing with sort-of working, dropping in/out on all the builds you listed below it would lead me to think that something is interfering with eve.
What antivirus do you use?
Have you checked for spyware/malware?
Do you have any other sound issues when playing other games, or listening to music? Or is it purely just eve which is suffering from this?
and on another note - Do the crackling/popping noises only happen on the Soundblaster Xi-Fi's? (its a known problem with the card itself when used in conjunction with a Nforce mobo caused by latency times on the mobo)
