Oveur	Posted - 2004.11.19 19:04:00 - [5] One thing I find strange, is that I just play me when I'm playing EVE - just in space. Isn't that considered roleplay? I don't have to talk like a scottish drunken dwarf with a beard down to my knees because I'm not a scottis drunken dwars with a beard down to my knees. I'm like, me. Just in a different world, where you don't drink coke, you drink Quafe. You don't drive a car, you fly a spaceship. With or without the scottish dwarf accent, I think that would barely be considered roleplay. Besides, my scottish dwarf accent sucks, I'd just be ruining roleplay for everyone else Ok, I sometimes say "Yarr" which I don't usually say in real life. However, the pizza delivery man gave me a wierd look when I told he was just like the damn Gallente. He didn't get it _____________________________ I say hey sky, s'other say I won say, I pray to J I get the same ol' same ol.

I'm a actually a drunken dwarf with a scottish accent in real life (beard down to here and everything) who is pretending to be some guy that's playing a game about an albino dude that flies a spaceship. But at least I don't ever say "yarr!" Ever. I do this 100% of the time. Even now. 2. In my experience, almost everyone else is actually a 37 year old guy named Frank pretending to be an woman, so I really haven't had any problems. But that might be just a Gallente thing.

When I talk in TS I am always OOC, and I also tend to refer to Avon in the third person (ie. "I'll bring Avon down there to help out") When I talk in local or in convo's I am almost always IC. Thing is, Avon IC it pretty easy to do. A few racial slurs, a couple of Yarr!!'s, some outrageous demands, etc. The difference is how I 'think' when I am talking IC. My points are not made in some fancy meta language, or with a dodgy French accent, but the things said are based on the knowledge Avon would have of the situation. Most people do not even realise there is any roleplay going on - they just think of me as a griefer who is adding the odd Yarr!! to take the p1ss. If you want to help my RP, I need a parrot, a red and white strippy shirt, and eye patch, a hook for a hand, and a wooden leg. A cutlass might be a little much. A lot of the people I see playing Eve are far more IC than they know. They are roleplaying their characters, putting their heart and soul into them. The problem comes because they don't realise they are reloplaying, and they view attacks on their characters as personal attacks, they don't have that IC / OOC seperation. People who are completely OOC see everything as an action in a game - and they are probably the minority of players. ______________________________________________ Never argue with idiots. They will just drag it down to their level, and then beat you through experience.

Answer: As much as I wanted to be (and would be if I could get the oppurtunity), no I'm not really. I'm probably down to 25% in charater and 75% out of it now. 2. Is it hard to roleplay if the majority of the people around you are not roleplaying? Answer: There are some who would say no. (and darn are they good) But I'm one of those yes people. It's so hard to stay in character for me when I've got people chatting about things like: Oh dude wus up? He got owned by so-&-so! I need like 35 Spectral Jammers, yo bud give em to me! Or hey how's your wife doing...? Sometimes I get 'spurts' of total RP, but few, if any, gets it as they still talk like themselves. And a DEV that doesn't know RP? Well, seems no one is perfect. That would explain a few things though...

Its fairly simple to work just about anything said in a public channel into roleplay in a science fiction game. People who dont roleplay become the uneducated masses. They are the people who have no idea what is going on in the world. People who are anti-roleplay are even more fun to deal with as they actually get more ****ed off by our staying in character than we do at their attempts at breaking our character. Anything anyone does that has any effect on the state of the universe is in a very basic sence RP. If you shoot a ship you are RPing your character commanding his ship to kill another ship, if you hand someone cash, you are RPing giving someone cash. The only thing that can possibly not be taken as a form of RP is in words, those can indeed break from character... but your character in its base form is seen more in its actions than the fancy words that go with the actions. I will also add this, By makeing a character that isnt myself, one that I am makeing a blantant shift in my own personality and beliefs to play I am able to take the game a bit less seriously than many who dont RP. RP wars have in most cases an underlieing OOC respect as a backdrop with the IC fighting and hatred being understood that it is a game... on the other hand wars thathave no RP reasoning, and are based entirely on OOC, have nowhere to shunt the hatreds that develop and often lose the basic respect that makes a good RP war fun.
