Edited by: Captain Mastiff on 05/01/2010 03:54:45 Why?
Do you ever ask yourself why is there a profanity filter on the forum?
Do you ever think... Wow for a game where nearly anything goes apart from death threats and RL money trading. Where I can insult someone to the extent they punch their monitor or where I can harass *cough* I mean beat the market competition endlessly bumping their orca for the lulz to prevent them retrieving a can from a roid field, for which I can swear my head off in the overly spammed and trolled "Help" channel with repercussions obviously. Where I can consistently gank someone and make their Eve life hell and utterly pointless for my "personal gain/Profit/Beating competition". Where I can make an extremely stable income and supply both my accounts with game time till the skin on my face looks like my ball sack in a summer day via scamming some helpless noob within game mechanics.
Has it ever crossed your mind... Apart from the obvious "Well its rude" Why do we have a profanity filter?
Is it to protect innocent and unbroken minds from the harsh reality of Eve local chat or the consistent Goatse/2girls1cup/thepounder/1guy1jar/1guy1screwdriver hyperlink spam. Is it to protect their fragile minds, or is it just because you're fed up of smacktalk including foul language?
To be honest I couldn't give a flying ****. However since I quite often fly my internet spaceship I do.
Anyone know the reason?

Because they can moderate it and they, like most other companies that are actually in business to make money, don't feel like fending off the irritating and pointless whining/lawsuits/boycotting/media press coverage that would result if they did otherwise.

Lawsuits? Only in America I think... You can't take a website to court when it even says online gameplay not rated.
For little johnnie's parents I believe they should of spelt his name properly and also view their child's activities online. They're awful parents if they read the forums on a game they don't even play but won't watch him whilst he plays for a moment or two when he logs on.
I Would say this is bordering child neglect in Johnnies case and have done some research to give him some website support. Little Johnnie Look here If his parents are looking at this, be ashamed of yourself. Eve is dirtier than the 900+ channels on sky or the canal bridges in and around the UK.

Even though most of our players live in a 'Family Guy' universe, some people do not feel the need to express or read other people's foul language.
It shows a lack of character and self respect. OK?
So shut the **** up and get back to EVE.

To do all that - you have to be IN the game, having agreed to the EULA, etc...
To read this forum - you need internet access. The forum is public, the game isn't. |

Oh Ye Gods, not another whine about the filter...
1) It's there for a reason, and that reason is not just USA-based. Plenty of countries have laws regarding the use of profanity - examples being both Great Britan and Australia - there's plenty of reason not to allow it on something, quite frankly, is not only for use by the players, but also serves as a advertisement for the game itself.
2) Profanity is not cool, and it's not necessary for anyone to communicate. Profanity used to be a way to express excess emotion, and was limited to such - these days, it's USELESS as a release because of it's overuse. If you can't express yourself without it, quite frankly you have other issues besides just poor communication skills.
3) Because of 2) above, it's also useless as a means to shock or startle people, as a lot of no-talent "comedians" who depended on it are finding out now.
4) This is CCP's playpen, it's CCP's rules, and CCP's ways of doing things. "Freedom of speech" laws do not apply to a private space; and for the purposes of the law, this Forum counts as a "private space". Most idiots who use that argument refer to the United States Bill Of Rights, section 1. Coincidentally, those idiots who use that argument are mostly from the USA. Since they never bothered to actually READ the section in question, they don't know that that section restricts only the US Federal Government from restraining "free speech" - there are NO provisions on anything else, including state government.
Sum total of above for the ADD or ADHD crowd: Don't like the way CCP does things, then quit the game. It's not gonna change just because you're whining about your lack of communication skills.

Of course society is to blame /lol.
Murder and mayhem is ok on primeTime TV in most of the world. But not bad language or sex.
EvE is subject to the same constraints.

Look on the Eve retail box, bottom left at the front. Do you see it? It is a big 12+ on my box, but it does change depending where you live.
To get this 12+ CCP has follow the rules as set out by PEGI, BBFC and all the other busybodies that exist to protect the morals of children.
So it is simples, the profanity filter exist to that CCP can put a 12+ on the box. Yep, you are playing a game that children play. Aw, sweet.

I had a lot of respect for the level of detail on this post from you until I got to the part above.
How ridiculous have you got to be by saying "Don't like the way CCP does things, then quit the game.
As well as "It's not gonna change just because you're whining about your lack of communication skills"
^ This one made me chuckle the most. If you didn't realise the language used in the initial post was only there to be used as a joke. However someone like you believes that I must speak like that at all time and then instantly jump to the conclusion that Im whining that my "lack of communication skills" is not supported by CCP.
Edit: Might I add to this part... Just because I questioned the profanity filter on the forums does NOT mean that I must swear a lot. When I was young I was taught about drugs, I asked questions about their legality but didn't mean I was shooting myself up with ****** everyday and in a hissy fit because it wasn't allowed.
1) Questioning is not whining... It's called asking a question.
2) My Lack of communication skills? Is this because I purposely placed a swear word so that it would get filtered out as a small joke?
3) It is only your opinion and some others who believe that using language which is classed as "foul" is awful and shows lack of communication skills. In my honest opinion "Foul" language has become a commonly used word or phrase to express things not so as explicitly as previously known. As well as the phrased "Well That's Gay" or calling someone a "***", South Park picked up brilliantly on this with an episode about Bikers and calling them ***s didn't mean they were accepting of Homosexuals, It meant that the word had evolved into some other meaning. Words evolve and so do phrases, "Foul" language has become a common sight or should I sound, the majority of people who actually swear usually don't do it aggressively or as explicitly as you may be led to believe. There are some though however who use it as an aggressive form of communication. Those I believe are the ones that lack communication skills. Using the F word, S Word or any other "Foul" word loosely is perfectly acceptable in my mind as well as other words.
So to end it on a high note...
I hope people have established that you are a prick. For actually using the pathetic phrase don't like it leave... Over something as simple as questioning the motives of the profanity filter. It was clear that it was a jokey/question rather than Whine but you just had to take your cheap shot to feel bigger.

I'm going on a tangent, but did you know that you can get a forum ban from using a word that gets nabbed by the profanity filter? Doesn't make much sense but it happened to a guy I know. And by a guy I know I mean me :)
As for the OP, the others have it right, ingame is supposed to be a fun environment where you can curse if you wish. But these forums are a part of a serious business that makes serious amounts of cash to fuel the serious amount of beer that they need to drink everyday to stay seriously alive. So you see, forums are serious business after all.

Its pretty simple, CPP have to maintain a ESRB rating and to be competitive want it to be rated T for Teen so therefore the forums also have to be aimed at this, they would loose the Teen rating if they allowed/encouraged profanity on the forums. |
