Quote: Although its name suggests perhaps even grander capabilities, Windows enthusiasts are excited over the discovery of a hidden "GodMode" feature that lets users access all of the operating system's control panels from within a single folder.
By creating a new folder in Windows 7 and renaming it with a certain text string at the end, users are able to have a single place to do everything from changing the look of the mouse pointer to making a new hard-drive partition.
The trick is also said to work in Windows Vista, although some are warning that although it works fine in 32-bit versions of Vista, it can cause 64-bit versions of that operating system to crash.
To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Once that is done, the folder's icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of control options. I'm not sure it's my idea of playing God, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls.
I've asked Microsoft for more details on the feature and how it came to be. But so far, Redmond is silent on the topic.
Heh...

Interesting, but not particularly useful, except as a means of just seeing what settings there are. All the features listed there can be found faster using the search box, rather than scrolling through a list of hundreds of items. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

Understatement of the year...
It can cause Vista x64 to commit violent suicide, as in: "Windows Explorer has stopped working" "Windows Explorer is restarting" "Windows Explorer has stopped working" "Windows Explorer is restarting" Rinse and repeat, forever and ever and ever... a little help, please?

Edited by: Kazuo Ishiguro on 07/01/2010 16:00:42 If it's as bad as you say for everyone on Vista x64, it'd make quite a devastating virus payload- the only available patch being windows 7
Well, I thought bits of it did look familiar, and that string did look rather like a registry entry:
http://www.microsoftnow.com/2010/01/windows-7-godmode-not-really.html
Quote: What youÆve done is basically figuring out how to make a shortcut to Control Panel and give it your own name! You can do the same with any of the classes in the registry and achieve similar results!
For example: SuperGodMode.{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921} will open the Personalization Control Panel and call it ôSuper God Modeö :-)
This is a fully documented Windows Shell feature, not an Easter Egg.
Good bye ôGod Modeö!

For the record you can name the folder whatever you want. Whatever you write before .{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} is what the folder will be named. So if you call it SwissCheese.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}, the folder will have the same features and be called SwissCheese. Either way, it's pretty nifty. ---------------- A million faces, each a million lies |

Confirming that while this sounds like a shortcut to Control Panel, it is in fact damn useful.
Most of windows functions in a drop-down list, rather than hidden in obscurely named folders or in options and advanced options menus.
...Including some things I didn't know windows could do, and/or never thought it would be worth bothering to try and get it to do.

Whilst I'm always one of the first people to cry /tinfoil and /profit whooring where M$ is involved I will say the going from xp to win7 on my 'old' desktop was like trading in my trusty rusty truck for a nice shiney blisteringly fast sportscar. Its just that much of an improvment. |

Well, this bricked my computer. Took a few minutes to fix, shame it doesn't work in Vista 64. For anyone that is using 64 bit Vista and is getting that crash cycle thing, here's how to fix it:
- Press Ctrl-alt-delete and start task manager.
- Click "File", "New Task (Run...)".
- Navigate to the directory where the folder is using the command prompt.
- The file can't be deleted, so rename it to something else by typing "rename GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} poo".
