Edited by: Mr Cleann on 09/01/2010 08:54:32 Space has lots of environmental issues in it. Like super novas, black holes, gama ray bursts, ion storms, nebulas, asteroids collisions, novas and super novas, dark matter, the list goes on and on. Can we have some environmental stuff added? space is way too safe in eve weather you are in empire or null sec. it is too safe of an environment when the only thing you need to worry about is other players and NPC's. we need more dangers and risks. How about a super nova in jita where the inhabitants have little warning of impending doom to escape. The excite ment would be awsome.

Gravitational pull of large space objects like stars, planets and moons. ship dmg when you get close to a star. little things that make eve even better.

exactly. Make space as realistic as possible. It will make the game more enjoyable with the added realism.

Supernovas would also destroy the system and eliminate it from the game...plus its not like a Supernova would creep up on you, you would be able to predict a general idea of when it would happen...however I do agree there should be more environmental dangers.

While I agree with the general idea, they would not really fit the back story.
Supper nova, as some has already said it would destroy the system and its gates. Also as supper nova and nova's only happen near the very end of a stars life after they have pretty much detroyed all the inner planets. So why would anyone build a jump gate in such a system?
Black hole's, who in the right mind would be able to build a jump gate within range and if the gate ca survive so can a ship.
All the jump gates in Eve are man made and a ship had to slow boat to the system to build it so only safe systems have gates.
Now a solar flare could produce that you are after and still happen in a system with a jump gate. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

I both agree and disagree to this. On the one hand, getting hit by a swarm of micro-meteors leaving you with an armour repair bill just isn't fun.
On the other hand, natural effects can alter the circumstances of an entire battle and cause a greater need for versitality.
A nice example would be to have artifacts or exotic asteroid belts hidden within nebulas that emmits radiation damaging any ship within it. To counter this, you would have to fit a new module, a type of lead based Anti-Radiation Plating that slightly increases ship weight, takes up a low slot, but allows you to work within hazardous environments.
Another example would be having planet gravitation fields altering the course of larger missiles, creating new tactical advantages. This would call for a lot of lag and unnecesary complicity for little gain, though.

Supernovas do destroy but they can also open up an opportunity to gather gases as well as artifacts or resources from the previous inhabitants. Theres always going to be something in the place of a system when its star either explodes or becomes a red giant. With reguards to a supernova a nebula would be nice to look at. A super nova would not come without warning. there could be the eve equivilant of NOAA that montiors and alerts people entering a system to the stars status and ETA of a stelar bang. The warning would serve to allow players to remove their pos's and other assets. But have the event completely random no timer that counts down. Just a bang that is followed by the sudden going away of things. (definition of an explosion btw). Anyone caught in one gets cloned in a random emergency cloaning station that is placed in stretgic locations also design the effects on r/w time limits. For example if our sun were to simply vanish. We would not know it for about 8 minutes. As that is how long it takes for fresh sun light leaving the sun to reach this planet. With that in mind, how long do you think it would take the shock wave of an exploading star to reach us? Does that shock wave travel at the speed of light or sublight? What ever the designers come up with for added risk as far as an environment the risk should range from light, which plays havoc with the systems, say like solar flares to extreamily severe. aka a star exploding. Even place the risk in the rookie systems. Pleass don't make the risk with the environment a security level determination. The environment has no boundaries.
Some ideas could be:
Asteroid collisions would be nice to. I'd like to see one smack a planet, As long as Im not on that planet when it hits.
Novas and super novas, Ion storms, solar flares, gamma rays, comets, rogue planets, just to name a few.
Watching the videos that lead to the creation of eve the people involved with the concept of eve said they wanted the game to be realistic but set in a ftureistic setting. How can it be realistic with out throwing the aspect of nature and random events in place. I'd like to be concerned with something besides npc's and players. We need better environmental events. ocuring. Supernovas can be a random event and for every system a nova whipes out another one can come in to being. Call it the little bang therory lol. BTW I am glad someone took the Elite series and made it a much better game. I'm just glad I dont have to adjust the rotation of my ship to match that of the station when we docked.

1. Player docks up and logs out, sets a month long skill because it's vacation time.
2. Stuff happens, and the stations and things in that system are destroyed.
3. Player returns and finds their stuff is gone.
4. Player does not resubscribe.

----- same thing can be applied to r/l except that you cant resubscribe anyways. lol. You can go on vacation, have a nice time return home and find it burned to the ground or swolloed up by the planet after a quake. Or it could be scattered across the country my a tornado. They have insurance for disasters. Something that already is available in eve. Nothing wrong with added risk. ATM we only have NPC's and players to be concerned about. We need more unknowns out there. As I don't care what game you play npc / player seems to be the norm as far as dangers. CCP could do a first by implementing r/w enviornments or a reasonable facimily of it.

I don't know what's funnier. The fact that he's asking for something already in the game.
Or the fact that you're arguing against something not fitting in the game which is already in the game.
Perhaps both of you should take a stroll to your nearest worm hole and find yourself's some black holes, red giants, pulsars and the other crap i can't remember ----------------------------------------------- Free Trade Corp - Flash page

I just pulled my issue #17 EON, page 77 to look up the wormhole anomalies.
Black Holes Cataclysmic Variable Magnetar Pulsar Red Giant Wolf-Rayet
All can be found in your nearest sleeper space except super nova's (which make no sense). Good hunting.

No.
Random events that destroy things are a terrible idea.
It also penalises casual players.
It also acts as a disincentive for returning players.
What reason would someone who hasn't played for say... 6 months have to return, when their ingame assets were destroyed by a random event?
There are many things that are irreplaceable.
E.g. special ships, like a ship you won in a tournament, or a ship given to you by a friend who died. Having those destroyed through random events is a ridiculous idea.

Edited by: wiersma on 12/01/2010 14:55:17 Super nova's are fun but would never hapen in an populated system.. super nova's dont just happen and take time. people living in a dying system would have evacuated that system 100's of years ago. so nothing would be lost.
But it would be fun entering systems that are reaching critical point. just for getting that extra mineral or special stuff.. Risc benefit factor.. bnefits are big but risking your ship is too.

We have to assume that people aren't playing this game just to experience frustrating digital supertragedies.
It's like having a game simulation of your house, where you have to watch it 24/7 to make sure it doesn't burn down. Imagine that mechanic in The Sims. ;)

You mean tradegies like being given a courier mission to low sec, jumping in a shuttle to run it, and having some mouth-breathing baby eater kill your ship and pod you just for the hell of it?
Because that's not frustrating at all.
