Well, if you ever happen to find another during the open beta time... :P
Also, I've never heard of that comic. And I now wish to read it as it sounds like it would be rather funny.

Hmm, seems the eve forums edited out part of the URL, so I had to go to deviant art and look it up myself. And yes, the amount of nerd flowing from that game is quite large. XD
Edit: oh, and lmao @ that comic. (Also, I wish I could stop my browser from doing this annoying crap when I post here..)

Based on my time in the closed beta if you like trek style storys with mass effect like ground combat liberally sprinkled with star fleet command style space battles then this is the game for you. Its pure story driven pve except for the pvp battlegrounds were you queue up in like wow to go to an arena to fight in up to 64vs64 matches. Basically a normal mission will see you get a task from an npc which requires you to warp to the place in question then fight some space baddies.
Once those are defeated you can then do the mission that might be scanning a derelict ship from the inside with your bridge crew in tow or maybe landing on a planet for some exploration. Moar fighting occurs that is like an fps in that you have to kill stuff to get to where you need to go instead of wandering around the killing fields racking up 15/15 of something then you are done. Then back to the ship where another space baddie encounter awaits. Oh and in sto when the mission is done you just com the npc who gave it to you and its done with all rewards beamed to the ship from whereever you are in space. NO MOAR TRAVEL GRIND!! \o/
In a lot of ways its a msprpg but the grouping was done very well if you want some real humans to go on an away mission with you instead of your normal bridge crew. Crap I could write pages about all the neat stuff but when I was reading about eve's winning game of the year I stumbled upon this rather good writeup that is pretty close to how I would describe the experiences I had.
Part 1. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/352/feature/3866/Preview-Part-One.html
Part 2. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/352/feature/3868
Part 3. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/352/feature/3877
Its not going to be an eve killer by anyones standards and to be quite honest I don't see alot of eve players even trying it out. But subs to all those other riskless carebear mmos out there are going to get a massive bleed off because the pve is just that fun if still a bit buggy and underdeveloped in a few areas. I'm sure all that will get sorted by release or not too long after if the massive improvements over just the last 3 patches are any indication.
To The Final Frontier!

....Ahahahaha. Oh, wow. Just, wow.
@Zeba: That sounds like something I'd enjoy. (As an avid lover of Bioware games, including Mass effect, Dragon Age Origins, and.. actually I think that's their only games that I've ever played. XD Sadly, I would love those games even more if they had limited co-op. 'specially Mass Effect. I prefer a deep, involving story line to almost anything else except for human interaction. If a game has both of those, I'll love it.)
Sadly, I can't afford a subscription fee. Hell, I'm only able to play EVE through buying PLEX cards off the market.

At present they are giving out codes to non-paying FP subscribers (because I certainly don't pay for my account at that site) the code however worked just fine and I'm downloading the client as I speak.
It's slow going though, an estimated 9 hours remaining. The client weighs in at around 6.6GB

Edited by: Kinuko on 13/01/2010 20:53:00 Edited by: Kinuko on 13/01/2010 20:51:04 STO is a big fail. It is more of a singleplayer game than a MMO, and a bad singleplayer game that is. I were expecting STO to be a good competitor of EVE which in turn would increase quality of both games but the truth is STO can't be even 1/10 of what EVE is. Now that open beta is started, I'm pretty sure that someone in CCP office is pretty happy about STO being a miserable game.

STO is a cheap rip-off of Cryptic's own superhero games. Same engine, virtually same gameplay. The shield gimmick doesn't even save the space part from playing almost exactly like any other MMO, let alone that the focus of STO lies so much on combat i'm sure that Roddenberry would be rolling over in his grave if he wasn't cremated.
In all seriousness, EVE is much, much more like Star Trek than STO is. It's not even funny anymore, but i guess that's because i'm a trekkie.

Tbh I think most new mmo's are going to struggle, STO might fare better because of the fan base, but what I've seen and read doesn't lead me to believe it will be anything other than average, what it does have in addition to the fan base is Bioware behind it and that might help it but I doubt it.

STO has nothing to do with Bioware. The game Bioware is working on is Star Wars: The Old Republic

A lot of my friends bought STO. They hounded me until I bought it too.
Our group intends to have us all become Klingons. They want to fly around and "gank" Federation ships.
I might be wrong, but I don't think the game works that way.
I told them we could already do stuff like that using our Eve accounts. They looked confused.
(I knew mining in Eve would lead to bad things...)
Anyone have a link to a good site that teaches Klingon?
Also what the hell is a Bat Leth? Sounds like some kind of Heath Ledger Batmobile crossover thing or something.

Actually if you are in the pvp zones it does work that way. Your group of organized birds of prey vs the carebear noobkirk blob who simply hit the pvp queue button and rolled the dice on a competant gang. Also the grouped pve is 110% zomg completely greifable though you might have to work at it to get a proper rise out of your instance mates. I haz already got a warning.. How you ask in a 100% pve setting? Welp there are quite a few ways but the easiest so far is to simply keep pausing the instance until they start ragemisspelling words in the chat. Yes you heard it here first, you can pause any instance in sto regardless of if its just you alone or a group. Needless to say I already ran out of pve content though to be fair only two zones are open atm..

I am in the OB right now, just got to the point where i could try some pvp as a klingon for the first time. its a very casual, instant gratification kind of game that does not seem to have a lot of depth. there is no penalty for dieing at all whatsoever. you can respawn as many times as you need to and it costs nothing. ----

This game is a joke. Take EVE, remove everything besides the agent chat window and make the "space" only deadspace that's separated by the accel gates (your usual mission setup). You accept a mission, finish it and warp to the next mission. Rinse and repeat, 1000 times. Voala, you have STO.

All I have to say is the graphics suck. Reminds me of SWG's ****ty graphics. They also messed the entire Star Trek story up. The game takes place in or around Kirk's time, yet the borg are around. The borg weren't mentioned until "the next generation". This game won't be any competition for eve IMO.

Wat? You would realize the timeline is nearly 40 years after first contact with the borg if you managed to read the backstory as stuff loaded or the text blurbs of the various npc in the introductory missions.
Originally by: Kyden This game won't be any competition for eve IMO
No shiat sherlock.. Carebear story driven linear progression pve mmo =! Harcore sandbox make it up as you go pvp mmo.
If you liked mass effect then you will probably like this game as it is pretty much a single player game in mmo trappings. I'm about as jaded a gamer as can be found and so far I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it for a few hours at a time though I will be the first to admit its primarily the liscense that is attractive and not any omg epic ground breaking game mechanics.

And to think i complain about eve for hours sesh
If you ever playd Starfleet Command 2 the space combat is just like it (released arround 2000/2001) Ground Combat is very run of the mill mmo like with floating text windows and damage notifications
The graphics seem to be High Quality but dont look very good Effects are good Has some nice features like auto grouping ppl to a "fleet" both in ground and space to complete the missions although judging from the sto forum population they prefer to call it quests to make it feel like WoW
All in all its a very PvE centric game that instances allot to help the lag because there isnt much "gamespace" If you want to pvp you can join a queue ... yay And to top it all off they would very much like you to pay Money to buy the game and then pay subscription for it It has to be sayd that they somewhat take into account that 15 dollars are not 15 euros but well i dont see anybody playing this game at its present state for a year perhaps that is why they already offer a "lifetime membership"
In conclusion If you want to play mostly against NPC's have stunning visuals engaging gameplay and good sound get x¦ and dont pay subscription and have fun with it much much longer than you are going to have with sto

I played it for a few hours tonight.
It's clunky interface and me accidently clicking on a security officer instead of a hostile and then having the camera pan to the sec officer frustrated me to no end.
I WANT TO SHOOT THE HOSTILE NOT LOOK AT MY MATE. Aarrrrggghhhhh.
Right. The graphics when cranked to high have lots of frills but no meat. The textures look like a giant monster came up to a polygon and pooped on it and then some art designers smeared the poop around and streaked it with their finger until it looked acceptable. Photon torpedoes however look incredibly awesome. Phasers look like really ****ty versions of tachyon beam lasers without any bloom.
The game itself is super linear: progress and gain rank through learning skills in various areas. How to achieve that? Run a billion missions. Seriously. At one point I asked if destroying a hostile ship gave me any "experience," nobody answered.
Add on top of that they're making it into a micro/cash MMO and I'm going to steer clear of this one. I'll play through the open beta to get my fix of Star Trek but this one honestly doesn't excite me.

- Two additional character slots.
it'll cost $239.99 USD though. wonder if it's worth it :P (I wouldn't know, I never managed to get my mittens on a key) :(

The main issue for me, The open beta isn't open at all.
videos and screenshots are one thing, but I'm not about to spend ú40 preording a game that I might dislike, when they offer free trials then I might give it a go and if I like it, jump in, but by then the pre-order bonuses have gone.
The game looks ok.. but not worth almost ú300 for a game+lifetimesub without trying it first, are they crazy?

Wat? You would realize the timeline is nearly 40 years after first contact with the borg if you managed to read the backstory as stuff loaded or the text blurbs of the various npc in the introductory missions.
uhh... I don't know where you two get your information but it clearly states on the games own website that it's set in 2409; 21 years after Voyager and 140 years after TOS. |

After I teamed up with some friends the ship battles were fun.
However tonight I can't log on because they don't have enough servers online.

Well please forgive me for not knowing my trek timelines to the exact year. Regardless if it was 21 years or 40 years after first contact with the borg the game is still set waaaay after kirk left the scene.

Edited by: Merin Ryskin on 17/01/2010 09:30:25 Got into the beta, and even ignoring the server issues, I'm not impressed. With such a heavy focus on carebearing, the replay value is going to be pretty much zero once you get through all the missions. It's kind of fun while it lasts though, until you run into the wall where your ship isn't good enough to do any of the missions offered until you grind a ton to buy new stuff. And did I mention it's all instanced?
As for the ship combat, it's Starfleet Command with a $15/month price tag. Save yourself the trouble, "buy" SFC II - Orion Pirates (the final version of the true SFC game, SFC III sucked), and get a game that has the same kind of combat but far more depth.
Final verdict: not an "EVE killer", not even close. -----------

I managed to win a free copy of the game so I've been playing the open beta all week. Ship combat is basically Pirates of the Burning Sea in space except better. Ground combat reminds me a lot of Star Wars Galaxies except a lot better and more tactical, and the away missions might be a bit simple but they aren't as terribly boring as SWG. The PVE is much more immersive than what Eve has.
There's some negatives. The PVP itself is okay, though the queues suck if you just want to hop in and fight people; Eve still has it beat there. Episode descriptions are somewhat vague at times as to where you have to go and there's no guidance so you have to figure out what sector block you need to be in then use the autopilot dealie to make your way there. Enemy contacts floating around are more annoying than immersive when you're trying to get somewhere.
Half a level away from hitting the level cap already and I have a fully-loaded escort ship and I'm working on kitting out a cruiser (I'm going to be pretty sad when the open beta is over and everything is wiped ). Progression is pretty quick for the time you put into it. Overall it's highly promising and already shaping out nicely. Whether it steals my Eve sub money is still up in the air, but I've got a gift card that should cover three months so it has time to convince me, though deep down I doubt it. __________

Edited by: baltec1 on 17/01/2010 21:25:50 Gotta say. After playing it for a while I just dont see how it can be called an MMORPG. It simply has no RPG in it at all, the pve is not much better than in eve and the pvp sucks balls. It is also the most risk free game I have ever played. If you die you dont even have to start the mission again, it just continues from where you left off...

baltec I feel you. It's just a big singleplayer game with a few multiplayer options thrown in. Hell, there's more NPCs wandering around stations than there are players. That's gotta be a bad sign.
Anyway, I was reading through the STO forums and came across this thread. I somehow find it amusing that STO being released may actually be a boost to Eve subscribers ;D

Well, I am in the OB and enjoying it quite a bit. I laugh at all the people ragging on STO based on less than a week of game play in a beta in which only @ 20% of the content is unlocked at the moment (the rest is unlocked this week). MMOs all take time to germinate into a good game, even EVE...it is head and shoulders above what it was when I started in 2006. I have faith STO will prosper as well...likely in a quicker fashion as well as they are going to have far more actual subcribers than EvE (as a niche) could ever hope to.

STO is a big ole carebear riskless pve oriented massively single player game and it will get droves of subs if the ingame chat is any indication as I quit listening to the 'opinions' of forum poasters regardless of the game loooooooong ago.
tl;dr: If you like star trek and carebearing then sto is gonna make you a very happy camper which if wows subscription base is any indication it will be the next big thing in casual mmo's. Eve as usual will plug along with it jaded and hateful niche playerbase weeding out the new subs at a steady incrimental rate leaving only the strongest to resub for another month.

Early 2005 for me and yes eve has clouded mine and everyones judgement due to it simply being the best there is. That however doesn't mean that because sto isnt eve that its not a good game. Saying that, after exploring all the current content in the begginer zones in sto I am fairly satisfied with the experience so far and will probably sub up later this year when its not lulz overpriced at a AAA single player game price. $50 to get entry into a carebear mmo? Nahhhhh..

diferent is, eve is a sandbox game, content is not required, the players generate that themselves, i have barely ever touched missions.
i mined, i kill peoples and take there stoof, occasionaly rat.
in sto (ive been playing it a week now...) is far too instanced for my liking every 20 feet you move theres a loading screen, and because of the instancing the "rp" is well, ****ed...
its SFC/BC with a subscription fee, and quite franklly its not worth a subscription fee, if it was F2P wit hmicrotransactions - which it is going to have along side the sub anyhow id buy it for the "need a break from eve time".. -----------------------------------------------

STO is easy and forgiving. If you're suffering from Eve related combat fatigue you could switch to STO and do space battles on easy mode.
However I don't think STO will have long term appeal to players that want a real challenge.

And don't get me started with "EVE is casual too", it's not and you know it unless you live in deep inside denial cave or something.

I might be wrong, but I don't think the game works that way.
Needless to say I already ran out of pve content though to be fair only two zones are open atm..
wut?!? What possibly use is a pause function? And how could they possibly thing it wouldn't be abused?!?

The only "exploit" I've seen was a funny bug that you can stack evasive maneuvers with full impulse while using Ramming speed for insane crashing suicidal damage. Like 1.8 mil damage because of how ramming speed calculates damage based on speed. (Yes you can ram someone to do damage in STO. Exploding ships also do lots of damage.)
Of course it's not something that will be around, but wow is it funny to try.
STO is not a MMO like EVE but none of you have experienced any content other then Nublet sector. That's like judging EVE on the forge.
Nothing against EVE but I just havn't had much fun in it for a couple years now. Too much political soap operas and immature back stabbing scams. CCP let people go too far scamming people. Especially when there is no NPC justice other then Concord, but they only shoot attackers in space.
PVE sucks so bad in EVE it feels more like working another day job to make income to PVP in anything decent.
Graphics on STO are very nice. GROUND AND SPACE both require tactics and thought to do well. PVP is a blast on both ends and has many forms, not just arena.
STO is alot better then all these hate posts are claiming.
Any insults on STO space controls baffles me. I HATE EVEs point and click model of control. EVE really needs to take a peak at STO ship controls because flying in STO is MUCH better then double clicking your screen.
Well I've gone on long enough. You guys arn't going to be changed by my opinions, but anyone thinking of trying STO, DO IT. Don't listen to the hate. I was NOT expecting to like STO at all, but got a lucky beta key and gave it a open minded shot.
STO requires more then a couple days to really experience......just like EVE. Imagine if you gave EVE such a shallow of a honest try, and judged it on just the starting area.
No full loss in STO so all you sadists don't bother looking at STO.
STO is NOT a sandbox as open as EVE, but it's a fun polished solid game that has been a welcomed surprise for me.

What you see in the starter areas are what you get throughout. There is literally nothing in the game other than a choice of one out of two pvp areana matches or a borg encounter and the same old kill missions. There is nothing to hold you in the game past getting a t5 ship pimped out with purple gear.

omg this game so rocks. yes theres still issues. irememebr when eve first came out there was plenty of issues. some took weeks or months to get ironed out. lag yeah. every onine mmo has it to various degrees. as for missions yeah i cant see doing 1million missions over the course of a year or 3,5 etc so there has to be some type of long term playing value
i just subbed 2 accounts 1 forever acct 239$ and another for theyear. my bro and i have already unsubbed our 5 eve accounts just have to get out of 0.0 before we leave lol.
some of the missions are driving us nuts tho. as for pvp i am sure they will hopefully tweak that as imsure that will constitute a large payer base who gets off on that kind of stuff.
bout the only thing i will miss is sitting there mining.
fighting is sooooo much better than eve. usually all you do do is sit there mash your missiles/guns etc, occasional rep or remote rep, jam etc. there you have all kinds of other things to do, move facing various shields towards enemy when taking damage, having multiple weaps/arcs available, etc.
too bad i have to wait 3 days to play again

i have to say i am going to make STO my main MMO game with eve still subbed to my one pvp account in the background.
STO seems a slower paced where i have actually read what the NPC are saying to me. which is different from reading the same mission text from eve saving that damsel in distress 40th time. the pve content wants to engage with you and tell you of a story. it not go kill x of these there is a reason why you are doing what your told.
e.g there a mission that i had to do where a freighter ship was in trouble and was being shot and raided by pirates. The eve style of this i would say is world collide with that herron in the middle where there ship is damaged by the war that is going on around them and you been tasked to save them.
eve you arrive, kill the guard of the acc gate, same again for the next 3 rooms get to the middle , move up to the broken herron , drag and drop crew into cargo hold, warp out and mission complete.
STO warp to area , engage pirates. then beam on to the plasma vented firey ship with your crew, kill the boarding parties of pirates, help vent the dangerous plasma. evac engineering as the warp core is about to explode help all the crew you can that are injured beam survivors on to your ship defend the ship while the captian stops ship from the warp core blowing up. captian on board warp out.
i just find sto more engaging with it PVE content and havnt felt so excited about beaming onto other ships helping the crew out to return to mine and having to divert all power to the forward sheilds because this pirate battleship wants to destroy me to beam out all the commodities on the freighter ship before it blows up. hell i found the tutorial more engaging than some of eve's PVE work TBH.
combat is nicely done offering breaks from space to inner ship or ground combat.

Another exploit, outside of combat, so say you just killed an enemy, 10 seconds or whatever after their death you are flagged out of combat. Fire up things like your engy ability, shields etc. anything to get you back in top shape then reassign your crew mate and back again and you have magially cleared the ability cooldown timer. You'll have to wait an extra 8 seconds or so but beats 45 seconds.

You make it sound very cool and engaging but in reality you just run up to the characters and objects that are flashing and press f. I'm not arguing that Eve missions are better, they're ****house, everyone knows that. That being said, I wish you all the best.

As it stands, EVE is a much better Star Trek game than STO is. And i am so not kidding.

Gotta agree with you.
Not that STO isn't fun, cause it is, it does a decent job of stealing the space combat from starfleet command ( my all time favorite combat game, go borg sphere gooooo ) and the missions are pretty interesting. It's definetly as casual/carebear as a MMO can get. And even the term MMO is strechting it a bit. Cause it's got more in common with Guild Wars then any real MMO.
The only real annoyance I have with it is that you need a macro just to be able to play ( pressing space every second for hours isn't my idea of fun ) Thought real long and hard about a lifetime sub, been subbing to eve for over 6 years now so... but it won't last that long and stay entertaining.
If you want interesting strategic space combat that does a decent job of ripping of starfleet command with a nice graphic lobby for all those interesting instances and arenas it's the game for you. If not, stick to EVE>

Just be careful out there. The game devs are charging for subscription, for expansions and for content added through patches in their other MMO, that is notorious for lack of content. Nobody deserves to get robbed like that, so keep an eye on your wallet. They might pick your pockets clean if you aren't careful. Have fun while you're there

Notice not one soul here mentioned the Klingon side of the game. They advertised them as a full faction for well over a year and all theyget at release are arena pvp maps that hold 20 people MAX.
And as for the Fed.....I really don;t see how much fun it will be 2 months down the road when the ONLY things you do are ....warp to system, kill x number of mobs....beam down to planet....kill x number of mobs.....beam back to ship...kill x number of mobs...leave. Rinse and repeat x10(100)time.
THIS is all STO is.....I did the beta. There is NOTHING more to this game than what I described above. Its a f*cking joke. Not to mention every damn thing is instanced to death. No form of community at all...not in the slightest.
This game will last 6 months TOPS. I like Star Trek as much as the next person. But this game is really embarrassing for that IP. It really is.

You know if you right click the phaser Icons they are set to autofire, and only need to hit space once when first attacking an enemy.

you can only have two weapons ports set to autofire. one fore, and one aft...
which can become a problem when you get into the bigger ships... having to hit spacebar every 2 seconds gets old, fast.
thankfully I found a bug.. which may or may not still be possible. right-click all your weapons really fast and they'll all get set to autofire. lag is a factor in getting this to work.
sad part is.. shooting more than two guns at once decreases your weapon energy. and the lower that energy is, the less damage your weapons do (my weapons normally did around 200-300 damage, when low on energy, they did around 20-30). so ... setting all weapons to autofire could ultimately be suicide. same can, and is, said for people who just mindlessly spam spacebar at all times.
also.. obviously NEVER set your photon torpedoes on autofire. people will point and laugh at you. (reason: they do next to zero damage to sheids. and when a shield goes down, they generally only stay truly down for about a second or two before they start regenerating.. just a little tiny bit of shields on the enemy's side where your torp hits basically nullifies it. so you want to time it yourself at all times).

I went the Science wessel route, so I only used for and aft phasers, but yeah, setting them to autofire was good enough. I suppose it is a problem with bigger vessels. I would also like to be able to fire individual phasers at multiple ships, like on target fore and a second one aft. But thats probably going to be more difficult to control and its obviously why on a Star Ship the pilot shouldn't also be aiming and firing the weapons at the same time.

STO seems alright for a single player game. Only missing the "quick save" feature, which I expect will be coming in an (paid) expansion soon. Of course you might enjoy it during the first couple of days/hours, but is it really a MMO you could imagine to play (and pay) for over months?
If STO manages to do great I will be impressed, but if it shut down I wonder if we will see a new immigration to EVE. I still remember with fondness the E&B and SWG:NGE immigrations. ---------------- Mr. Science & Trade Institute

But it's 2 days into 'headstart', and the infinite server queue is a brilliant piece of coding. I wonder what retail day will be like? 4x - 10x more players? The queues already at 1400 out of 1400.

Hate it. I played the open beta for 2 weeks and got bored. It's been live for 2 days (head start) and im already bored again. It feels like it should be a single player adventure. Im wondering whats the point of grinding missions on my own just to level up and fly a better ship. Also the Steam bug where the game files got deleted and we were forced to download 10gb again really ****ed me off. I wont be paying a monthly subscription for this turd.

From what I have seen and read it isn't actually a bad game, but there really isn't a reason to sub either, so it sort of fails as an MMO. It has no appeal for me mainly because I own all starfleet command games(this is where STO copied the space combat) and have the elite force series(FPS star trek). The single player games have better stories naturally, SFC has much more playable races and the PvP in STO seems so small scale, that it doesn't differ enough from normal multiplayer matches.
I'm sure any trekkie who plays some average/bad MMOs or doesn't play an MMO yet could be pleased with it. At the very least the IP is so popular, that there will be significant interest in the game initially. The responsibility for it's success or failure is entirely on Cryptics shoulders. Trekkies have wanted a star trek MMO for so long, that it has to be really bad to be totally abandoned by fans.

STO will be short term fun, EVE is somewhat long term fun. I really like the fun. I really liked the Elite Force games, especially two, even though it died a painfully slow agonising death by Activision and Paramounts law suits. I'd like to think I prolonged that suffering by making multiplayer maps.

Sadly, i don't think Cryptic is fit for making MMORPGs.
City of Heroes/Villians lacked content. If you played the game, you constantly rolled a new toon. Some enjoyed it, many did not.
Champions Online lacked content. The PvE was weaksauce, the PvP was enjoyable if you could look past all the FotM builds - That is, if T4 PvP wasn't a mess. T1-T3 offered a good PvP map - A wrestling cage, or just a room with alot of platforms. Was great. T4 aka endgame PvP? An area filled with lava... Fall into lava, take damage. 15 man FFA area. Stronghold, where you battled NPCs primarily. Good going, Cryptic.
And now the words on the street is... STO is lacking content. Cryptic, back to MMO 101 with ya'!

yeah, I'm with you on that..
Giving the IP to cryptic was perhaps not the best decision. They're simply not equipped to handle an IP with such a huge fan-base.
City of Heroes/Villains has around 500,000 subscribers... and champions online just launched six or so months ago... http://mmodata.net/
the star trek community looms large.. and if it strikes, the subscriptions could well number in the millions (though prolly not as many as WoW, obviously).
the website, the forum, the mods, the GMs, and above all the game-server isn't equipped to handle that.

It's not as if Cryptic was the first port of call, I think it went to Perpetual who went under, and cryptic snapped it up.

the IP-holders yanked it out of perpetual's hands... with right. one week you were supposed to command your own starship, next week we were all supposed to be apart of one big crew, then after that it was squadcombat...
they kept promising stuff, and changing their minds about what kind of a game they wanted... the IP-holders still had a choice though.. they chose poorly, in my arrogant opinion.

I've got a similar perspective. Part of me is kinda smug and happy that the game is so average. Serves them right for thinking they could compete so directly with the masterpiece which is eve.
But the artwork is really top notch. It's definitely the executives who have dropped the ball in this little endevour, if they ever even knew what a "ball" was.
CCP should poach some of Cryptic's disillusioned art employees. Not only would they make nice recruits, but it would also sabotage the competition.

Having played STO through the Open Beta and now im at the commander lvl currently in the game I just thought I would add my opinion. Now before I start I know all mmo's start off rocky and unfinished but hear me out.
Missions: Like most mmo's they are repetitive and very linear I have done so many missions where it is like go to this system kill some ships beam down to the planet kill some stuff and beam back. Granted there is a bit of story but not really enough to make it interesting.
The Game Generally: Nothing you do in game has any affect on the world as a whole and the only thing really that gives you an incentive to go on is to get a new ship. Now this is all well and good but if they dont improve the missions and add content that changes the universe then I see many people getting bored and leaving.
There is no death penalty what so ever which for me makes it quite boring, some people may like that but I think it just makes the pve aspect of the game quite unchallenging. Its like oh im dead well no matter ill respawn at full health ready to obliterate the ships.
Exploration Now for a star trek game you would think there would be some form of good exploration that is interesting and fun this is not the case. You go into a system and scan some anomalies and destroy some ships. If you do the exploration missions you are given the same boring missions over and over again. There is little or no variation in what ive seen so far.
From what ive seen there is no hidden items to find or systems to explore which really is very boring everything is known and nothing is new. Even freelancer for thoes of you who remember it had hidden wrecks of ships and jump holes to unknown systems. That was realeased years ago and it even had multiplayer.
Cryptic really has let me down with star trek online, I wasent expecting much to begin with but this is worse than I thought tbh. Looks like eve is my number one mmo for some time more. As people have said eve is more like star trek than what sto is and this is very true.
Cryptic has made a game that is not complex or interesting and I feel sorry for every star trek fan and especially for the people who have paid the life time subscription as I fear that they may not get their moneys worth.
I will play for the first month that I got with the game but I will not be renewing my subscription beyond that. I may play it again in the future if there are some radical changes to the game but atm bye bye sto.
Bring on Bioshock 2 thats all I have left to say

I suspect it is a nice learning experience for CCP, since they can learn much about what works or doesn't work and they get loads of new ideas, but Cryptic/Atari will pay the cost of bad features and mistakes in implementation.

There's nothing whatsoever in STO that would work in EVE. Nothing. STO is diametrically opposed to EVE in every way - The only thing they have in common is that they're both scifi. But that's a large part of why STO fails. Rather than CCP taking something from Cryptic, Cryptic should have taken something from CCP. As it stands now, EVE is much, much more like Star Trek than STO is.

But that's a large part of why STO fails. Rather than CCP taking something from Cryptic, Cryptic should have taken something from CCP. As it stands now, EVE is much, much more like Star Trek than STO is.
I dunno.. I really like the *way* that space combat is done in STO, and wouldn't mind if it was implemented in EVE ;) it'd cause HELL to PvP... but PvE would be a lot more fun (at least for me).
firing arcs and having shields on each side of your ship makes for possibilities of some pretty slick strategic manoeuvres.
I'm not too keen on all the Bridge Officer powers and such that you get... mostly because my the time you hit Heavy Cruisers and equivalents.. you get far too many buttons to push and I'm running out of keyboard to use. 1-8 and F1-F8 are all used up... :P

No matter what happens to STO it isn't a total loss. CCP has propably gotten some new ideas from it and can blatantly steal the good ones, develop them further and either use them to boost existing features or implement new ones in EVE. I suspect it is a nice learning experience for CCP, since they can learn much about what works or doesn't work and they get loads of new ideas, but Cryptic/Atari will pay the cost of bad features and mistakes in implementation.

Pretty much yeah. I'm still enjoying the game myself mostly because of the space combat and that it's as casual as a game can get. But EVE shouldn't take anything away from this, it's just a completely different style of game.

Yeh I do like the space combat some what I really wish you could fly your ship in a loop though instead of having a fixed max up and down angle. That really drives me crazy and limits space combat quite a bit. Eve shouldnt take anything from sto imo other than allowing you to walk around in stations ^^ not heard anything new about that from ccp.

they've said that they tried putting it in at the beginning but that it did weird things to the engine... and that when they've fixed that, they'll add it in again.

Sure there is:
-Getting missions from agents through coms, no need for docking -Visual shield effects when they are hit
and to a lesser degree: -Ship appearance customization -Bridge officers and their effect on ship performance
