Hi I am looking to branch into a bit of PVP but the mechanics of temp kill rights confuses me slightly. E.G the other day I was ratting in 0.5 and a guy in a Ishtar (I think tech 1 anyway) stole my loot obviously spoiling for a fight and goes red on my overview. I was up for it so targeted him but in warped his mate in a battleship. Now if they are in the same corp (which they were) and I shoot him for looting can his mate shoot me without concord intervening? If so that makes retaliating to looters very dangerous as you can never know who is waiting to warp in Cheers

No, if you shoot him, only he can retaliate. None of his corpmates, fleet members, buddies or any other player can freely attack you. However, they can remote repair the thief that you are fighting.

I asked this question in rookie chat and was told that people in the same fleet and/or corp have the right to attack people who attack someone else in their fleet/corp.
Very confusing.

If they are in the same corp, they can as far as I've been told in the Help channel. If they are fleeted with the aggressor, but not in the aggressor's corp, they can't without getting Concorded.

Try these:
Kill Rights
Criminal Flagging System

Theft and PVP aggros are not called "kill rights". Kill rights last 30 days and are given to victims who did not retaliate to an illegal ship destruction. Aggro last 15 minutes from the last criminal action.
Theft is flagged to player corp (if any), or the player (if not in a player corp). Stealing does not generate PVP aggro, so the thief is free to dock or log off immediately.
Attacking is always flagged to the individual. Illegal attacking also flags to "global" in addition to the individual.
What is this time flux thing? |

Thanks everyone. I understand the difference between kill rights and aggro now but still get conflicting answers regarding the retaliation thereafter..I will see if it happens again and sacrifice myself in the name of research if necessary..

To answer your question directly: He stole from you and may now be attacked by you or your (player) corp members. He is not allowed to shoot you before you open up on him.
His friend (no matter if he is in the same corp or not) is not allowed to shoot you, even if you open fire on the thief. What his friend would have done is to remote repair the thief as soon as you start to fight him (you would most likely lose). The BS would then go red to you as well for helping the thief. As before the loot thief, the helping BS would not be allowed to shoot you until you open fire, first.

This is the correct answer. The BS was there to remote rep, hoping you'd open fire on him as well, but not really caring either way, he was going to rep his mate to make sure you died instead of his mate.
Theft and counter-theft can be a bit more tricky:
If you steal from the can of a player who's in a player corporation, you're actually stealing from the corp. i.e. the jet-can belongs to the corp, so if you steal from it, you're stealing from the corp.
Watch for a can-flip - if he places stuff into his own can (even if it's your stuff he just nicked from you) and you 'steal' it back, you're flagged to his corp - you stole from his corporation, not just him.
You can use this to your advantage as well - having a corp mate in a cloaked combat ship nearby can be an effective counter to thieves.
