Edited by: Culmen on 13/01/2010 15:53:54 Interesting fact Did you know that if you spill Southern Comfort(100 proof), it will harden into a glue like resin?
I just found out about this myself when I accidentally spilled a shot of the stuff on my keyboard.
Now the left-control key is sticky, and the cap locks key is more or less non-functional. Also broken are some weird buttons on the left side that i never use anyway. Shift key seems to work for some reason, maybe because i was actually using them.
So any clue on how to unstick a key thats been essentially glued in place? and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Magnus Nordir on 13/01/2010 16:15:37 Pluck the keys off the keyboard, stick them in socks (around 10-15 per sock) and put them in the washing machine. Clean the keyboard itself with alcohol swipes and dry paper towels.
And you may want to take a picture of your keyboard before you start plucking the keys out. |

Southern Comfort isn't the only fluid that can cause problems with keyboards.
I find that having some wet wipes handy in case of spillages and immmediately mopping up the spu... erm.... offending substance before too much of it can leak into the KB works quite well.
Best to have a can of "Oust" or similar handy as well in case you Mum hears you swearing at the PC and dedcides to investigate.

Ruined mine some days ago, as well. Beeing a lazy bum I can confirm this solution works pretty good.

Part of me wants to know how that stuff could get on a keyboard thats significantly above seating level. The other part of me does not want that question answered and would claw my own eyes out getting that image from my brain.

You can take most keyboards apart and give 'em a good scrubdown providing yours is of the "Membrane" style, not using mechanical switches or clicky keys.
The keyboard is usually a seperate entity from the membrane so just get a screwdriver and rip the sucker apart. then when you're certain you've removed all electronic items from the board, get a stout brush and some bathroom cleaner or similar and go to town on the board. If theres excessive gunk in the key movement, soak it in hot water for 10 minutes or so.
After you're done, let the keys dry out completely by shaking the board to remove the excess water and place it on a radiator to dry out. Either that, or be particularly detailed with a towel.
Reassemble keyboard, and it'll be as good as new.
