Just been watching the news. An earthquake in Haiti killed hundreds and everyone is rushing to help. A perfect example of the good we can do.
But, this country has been left to rot, despoiled by previous governments and left uncared for and untended by the rest of the "civilised" world. A perfect example of the worst we can do. Why is it that we don't care the rest of the time? And I'm not just talking about Haiti here, I'm talking about everything.
Can someone give me a good reason why we behave like this and how we can possibly think we are in anyway "civilised" or "decent"? I'm not being maudlin or intentionally depressing, just curious what my fellow podders think.

The reason is because we are humans and on that note i will also say let them rot for all i care unless there is good money in it i wouldn't help them.

Last news I heard about Haiti before the quake was civil unrest throughout the country back in 2004. http://www.cincinnati.com/nie/archive/02-24-04/

We don't try and "help" other countries right now because then we get whats happening in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. __________________________

Not that I'm denying an earthquake as a tragic event, but I find it ultimately hypocritical that we do everything in our power to aid people hurt by the forces of nature, yet we do everything in our power to fund and perpetuate war.
I feel logic and priorities have been mislaid somewhere along the line.
Basically, I try not to think about it. More time for blowing up internet spaceships.

I'll assume you did not read the whole article... ill forgive you this time.
"Medical workers from Doctors Without Borders, which had 800 people in Haiti before the quake, "
800 form Doctors Without Borders is a good amount of people to be in a little country like that. So there is some "good" in the world.
Some people don't want to help people that can't help themselves because they feel its wasted effort, regardless of if its "their fault" or not. That is one reason I feel that places get neglected.

As others have pointed out, there were aid agencies in Haiti before the earth quake, but media like CNN will not normally do 30min specials on the work of Tear Fund or Christian Aid in every country. _____________________

What have you personally done to help the people in Haiti?

Edited by: sella buya on 15/01/2010 07:30:51 They have had over 200 years to get things figured out (revolt and Independence from France 1804)!
It was the first Black nation in the western hemisphere to gain independence. Today, it is still acting like one of its sister african dysfunctional countries.
54% live in abject poverty...and were doing so BEFORE the earthquake. The UN has been there since 2004 and were you donating or caring about Haiti before the earthquake?
50% Literacy rate, yet 80% Catholic. Apparently you don't have to be able to read in order to believe in some sort of god...just make sure you tithe though!
Haiti is known for getting constantly hammered by hurricanes, tropical storms AND earthquakes. The land has been decimated by forest clearing for agriculture and fuel. With the economy, political system and rampant crime it is no wonder people flee in droves everyday.
Stop being emotional and start researching!!! |
