I mean they were so coooool! Why did CCP decide to change them to the pathetic barely visible trails we look at today? If it was a performance issue or something akin to that I can sort of understand, but can't we come to a middleground here? They don't have to be as long as they used to be (like multi-kilometer long sometimes) so its not just a big blob of trails all over but at LEAST make them longer than they are now, because I would love to see my ship leaving pretty colors behind it as it zooms around, adds to the feeling of speed so much.
Me want trails back!

Yep they where a resource hog, and CCP haven't figured out how to bring them back (yet).

Engine trails were discovered to be polluting the space around us, and had to go. These horrible toxins were causing havoc on the livesto...errr, slav... err, Amarrian workforce. The toxins had to be stopped.

I wonder if theres some sort of particles expansion in the works as it where seeing as the gate particle fx mystieriously disapeard from sisi too despite being awesome.
i guess ccp are having problems with their particle engine of some variety.

Someone from CCP a while back said something about trails in a similar thread, they mentioned that they were originally a resource hog but that they were working on ways to reduce that and suggested that they may be making a comeback since they were so popular.
They do seem to want to bring them back and hopefully we might see them if they can get it to work, I'd like to see them again. ------------------------------------------------ You either need a punch up the throat or a good shag.
Nobody round here is offering the second one therefore your choices are limited! |

maybe they could do a small amount of dmg to rats or you could turn it on and off with a switch on your ship.

Probably for the same reason that they removed the really awesome jump effects and the reason why some ships look like they've been designed by mentally disturbed people.
CCP dont like stuff to look cool.

I don't like the old engine trails... They seem unrealistic and anoying to me. These aren't aircraft they don't leave contrails.

At one of the round tables at fanfest'09, the utterly awful cyno effect was mentioned and a dev said there were a batch of about 40 effects that are being redone . No doubt trails is one of those effects. Hopefully with the Excellence programme those things will get some attention.

I miss the old trails so much.. though maybe as something can be turned off for the sake of resourcing clientside.
I mean those were one of the most awesome things when I first arrived in EVE o.o And stuff realism, the trails can be explained by plasma exhaust or the like easily enough.

So THAT'S why the stars are so much clearer now.
I do like the fact that at least my Firetail and other Minni frigates at least have a bigger trail of fire when I speed up and throw on the AB/MWD. That plus all the smoke when firing missiles and autocannons from a Rifter seem to be the most animation I can find when in a fight.

Engine trails were before my time, but I've seen youtubes of videos with engine trails...and I'd like to see them bought back :)

Yeah, what happened to the energy connection from the Acceleration gates? .. And didn't the jumpgates have these nice 'idling connection' animation for a while, too? o.O Where'd those go?

They went because whilst developing the Scene2 Trinity engine (the one we saw in Apoc), they discovered they were lowering the FPS by a considerable amount. ---

back before the nanonerf they were an easy way to see what direction your ship was traveling in at a glance (since the models turn alot slower than the actual ship, you weren't always flying forwards, in fact sometimes it was possible to get your ship to fly backwards for a short while.).
Don't really need them now, or at least I've got used to doing without. ------

Funny.. I was just thinking about this the other day.. "Hey, didn't I have trails at one time? Plus, wasn't there an option to turn them on/off?"
Edit: I had a great idea on trails when I was thinking about them. Would be very nice to see the trails be 'dynamic', as in it wouldn't stay perfectly perpendicular to the ship.. Have some variety on how the trail looks.

Stupid excuse. It's a client-only thing, and my PC (as many others) never had problems with them. Also, AFAIK, you could turn them off, so what was real reason?
