If you have no interest in a Mining Barge or Exhumer then your next best bet is going to be a BS setup. Preferably with 8 turrets and as many Mining Upgrades as can be fit. Only real choice there for Gallente is the Hyperion. I believe the best BS for a mining setup is actually Rokh.

Well if you don't wanna skill for the Tau Broadside....doh wrong topic.
Well I think before I got into a Hulk I mined in most ships, BCs are ok but with limited cargo space. The other alternative is to use a BS. I have used plenty of BSs to mine with across all Factions.
I found the Abby was my favorite but if your gonna stick with Gallente you want, 8 highs for lasers, 8 lows for Cargo expanders and a mid for a Survey scanner. You can get a decent mining ship out of a Hype, but this'll cost you along the same lines as a Hulk.
Dont forget cargo rigs and drones, even a Domi can make a decent mining vessel, but then again a Retriever will out mine you, you may flame me for this but why not go for a Retriever, it's not that skill intensive and it'll make life a little easier, you'll also pull in more. Cargo space will be better and you'll have fewer trips back to station to unload, and you'll have no risk of flippers pinching from a jet can!
Remember any ship can be used to mine in to some degree, you can try fittings in EFT if you have it to check your yield etc, I would suggest you do this and compare it to a Retriever just to see the difference.

answers all of your questions, as yes the rokh is the best non ore miner out there. But any BS with a high amount of turrets will work. If you are not investing the time in Ore ships, you are generally better off with the highest meta level BS you can fly. It is not worth cross training Caldari BS instead of Ore. But for Gallante it would be the hype with 8 turret locations.
something like this for high sec work
[Hyperion, mining-high sec] Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II
Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II [empty med slot] [empty med slot] [empty med slot]
Miner II Miner II Miner II Miner II Miner II Miner II Miner II Miner II
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
Hammerhead II x5 Mining Drone I x5

The best mining ship for both the Gallente and Caldari, ignoring ORE ships, is going to be the Tier 3 Battleship (Hyperion for Gallente, Rokh for Caldari). The main requirement is that you have 8 mining lasers. Once you got that requirement checked out, fit for a larger cargohold. Clear Skies Day of Darkness |
