The team did a fantastic job on the planets - they're beautiful in a cutting-edge sort of way. Eve has never looked better, keep up the good work!

Excellent work on the planets there, but the temperate ones could use some more work, especially the coastlines and oceans look off (maybe it's the lack of AA). Some climate differences might work too.

Edited by: Jowen Datloran on 20/01/2010 10:01:25 Ah, nice to see all the dimwits coming out of the closet (again) and fail to realize (or acknowledge) that there are more than one team of developers within CCP and that not all teams are or can be working on the same stuff at the same time.
Excellent blog btw., excellent. Love the technical details and it seems like here we have at least one team that managed to live up to the expectations. ---------------- Mr. Science & Trade Institute

New planets looks fantastic. thx :)
..but I have one thing... In some solarsystems, the inner planets CLOSEST TO THE SUN, have water on them... thats just not logical.
Dry, hot planets are dry and hot BECAUSE of their position to the sun. Ice planets are ice planets BECAUSE of their position to the sun etc.
Im not a space buffin and I may be wrong, or what?

Awesome work.
Although I would be happier if there were a few more base height field textures, at least for the temperate planets. I know you can do a lot with two using reflections, translations and scaling, but with hundreds (514 ?) or thousands temperate planets some of the continents might be eerily familear. Bumping it up to say 4 would create vastly more combinations. Amarr Victor. |

Maybe looks awesome, who realy cares ? Do you guyz have nothing better to do, than to spending development time on this ???
I'll give you a hint..... what about spending your f***king time on optimizing code and removing lag ???? instead of it you created a new lag monster DOMINION.

CCP Mannapi, BIG thanks for the blog. Was a very interesting read. Don't let your mood get pulled down by the ****heads who don't get the scrum-team-approach and that 'many hands make light work' doesn't apply to working all on one single problem at the same time.
I got a question though about the rings. I witnessed them moving VERTICALLY - whats up with that? Is their 'construction' plane not 100% rectangular to their rotating axis/the rotating axis of their plane?
Again, thanks for the blog!

The new planets look better in some ways but worse in others. Like why do the new planets not spin? Will this get fixed or will you just ignore it like all the other problems like broken shadows and broken sound. ______ How to Passive Shield Tank T2

When I was on the test server a couple weeks before Dominion release I had the impression that at some point of time the quality of the textures on the planets were much higher and got nerfed later to the current state which is considerably lower.
Any idea what happened there?

Well all other problems aside, you did a good job on the planets, it is an improvement for the visual quality of the game.

Having looked at them in-game over the past weeks, I've said "Woah!" quite a lot whenever I get close to them as they really look amazing. I also figured I didn't want to know just how much work went into making such realistic looking planets. Having read this, I think I was right.
Great job!

Originally by: Merouk Baas Edited by: Merouk Baas on 19/01/2010 23:26:53 They look pretty good, but you forgot the POLAR ICE CAPS on all the ones with atmospheres!! I mean, come on, realism!
Also, until we can actually approach to satellite orbit distances, almost dipping into atmospheres, the planets are not gonna be all that they can be.
Examples:
X3 Terran Conflict Screenshot. Star Trek Wallpaper. Earth upper atmosphere by NASA. Satellite in orbit.
Get us closer, so the planets appear bigger.
Was stated somewhere Stations, Gates, other Celestials would be moved closer to Planets...and bookmarks[I could care less]. Was this cancelled? When will it occur?
At this point I'm MWDing in an inty to get good pics, as zooming in reveals you have disabled the procedural rendering tech...]:o
I understand that might have caused more lag, but it's ON THE BACKGROUND, and thta is causing frameloss ALL THE TIME[now fixed]. Not just when you are "near" a gorgeous planet.
Also, storms on non-stormy types please. Dust storms, polarcaps, ruins. Use NASA as inspiration. And a planet orbiting a planet PLEASE. Or multiple moons near a giant planet. [intro for Avatar] Plant life on alien worlds does not have to be green...oceans can have primordial seas, all the way to blood colours. Pink/orange/teal clouds can exist. Let's make Spore look childish, m'kay?
You could even randomize the distances so the planets look different sizes on warpin, they don't all have to be far orbit or close orbit.
Got your work cut out for you again.
X3 is EVE Offline. But they have missiles with proper trails.

mm. god, this is the first time I've posted in here for so many years...
its a shame to hear a minority of naysayers whinging about how its a waste of time, and you should be only looking at improving fleet/sov etc. Clearly CCP should also release a greyscale vector graphics wireframe engine to keep them happy.
The rest of us can be happy to see the good work contribute the the beautiful immersive atmosphere. well, that's a lie. I'll not be happy. I'll look closely, and sob as I realise I'd be willing to *censored in 156 nations* to be on the art team. :/
a few things irritate me though, some already said. planetary textures seem to be rather consistent. where's the planets with desert belts and temperate zones? or the mostly frozen worlds with a just-liquid equator... or the temperate ice-capped planets.... the frozen waterworlds with a few mountains peeking out, etc. and best of all, if some of these elements and features were interchangable, so there's even more variation with the same overheads.
beyond that, the thing that strikes me is that these beautiful environments remain a little under-exploited. I'd love to see some ways to get more gameplay elements for the newbie/missionrunner/empiredweller/whatever set looking close down on these spectacular vistas. then again I still want to see Low planetary Orbit stations only 200km above the surface, with the planet looming massive and spectacular overhead. Oh, and if Ambulation ever does appear, the stations had better damn well have windows, so we can look out over these spactacular planets...

Edited by: Trazec on 30/01/2010 15:37:28 Please don't mind the morons who whine about lag and framerate drops, alright? You're doing a great job, personally I think the new planets look really nice. :)
I'll have to agree with what has been stated before, however; ice caps, deserts and similar things to make things look even more like individual worlds and not copies of the same. Also, low-orbit stations would be amazing. Actually, low-orbit combat would be even more so.
As I have also been thinking about how missions could be improved upon quite a bit lately, I give you the following example: As part of a storyline mission, your agent contacts you and desperately urges you to intercept a fleet of pirates who are descending upon an unsuspecting colony on a temperate planet in a nearby system. You warp to the scene with haste, and find yourself battling the pirates in the planet's exobase.
Amazing visuals, much? ;) For now though, keep up the good work!

A really nice read. It was interesting to find out how a lot of this was done in fact.. where I wasn't blinded with science x.x Still, I hadn't realised Plasma and Storm planets were two separate types o.O Or did I misread somewhere?
