Hi everyone!
With this latest EVE Online update, Inferno 1.1, CCP and Transgaming are releasing changes to the EVE Client and Cider that our internal testing shows to have clear benefits to client performance under OS X. Without getting too technical the changes are to backend rendering in the EVE client (not Mac specific implementations) and disabling some caching in Cider that was necessary for flaws in OS X drivers since Tiger (10.4).
We would very much appreciate your feedback on these changes, if you notice any change in client performance please post in this thread using this template:
System info: GPU model, CPU model, RAM, OS version etc. EVE client settings info: Graphics settings, windowed / fullscreen, language settings etc. Description of difference: Describe what your experience was before and how it is different now.
Example post: MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2009 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 8GB 1067MHz DDR3 RAM OS X Lion 10.7.4 External monitor at 1920x1200
Graphics settings on high, all brackets on. English language. Windowed mode. Running two clients, using clone maker tool from EVE wiki.
FPS is about the same when idle but when warping to a POS with lots of modules on grid there used to be a more noticable hang (approx 1-2 seconds), this is no longer happening after Inferno 1.1 was deployed.
In case you find a serious issue that needs immediate attention please file a bug report in addition to posting here, you can find instructions on bug reporting here on the EVE wiki. Please note that OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) is not supported, the minimum operating system version is 10.6.7 (Snow Leopard). This means that we do not test for issues on Leopard and cannot guarantee satisfactory performance of the client under that operating system. Why?
In order to accommodate some changes in the EVE client some features in Cider have been disabled, with Inferno 1.1 which is what we deployed today. Those Cider features were originally implemented to solve an issue with OS X drivers being slow in some circumstances. Snow Leopard and Lion saw some very big changes to drivers so I'd guess this is the cause. I am not aware of any way to get updated drivers for OS X without purchasing an upgrade from Apple. I logged in after the patch this evening and I am experiencing some weird lag which only seems to occur when docking/undocking from a station or jumping through a gate.
The client "hangs" after successfully performing whichever task you are doing i.e jumping through gate, ship goes invisible, but then only after around 10-20sec does it actually jump to the next system.

Here's a picture of the framerate once I warp, from POS to mid-warp you can clearly see the jump. My CPU and memory are well below average so my system is not even chugging.

Hitting escape and bringing up the settings menu also spikes the frame rate at the POS.

MacBook Pro 17", Mid 2010 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 8GB 1067MHz DDR3 RAM OS X Lion 10.7.4 NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB Windowed mode, 1920 x 1156
Graphics settings on low, all brackets on. English language. Windowed mode. Running one or two clients, using clone maker tool from EVE wiki.
Issue: Low fps
When running either one or 2 clients my fps is about half what it was with 1.0.10. For example with two clients I was getting 15 fps, now: 8 (When just flying about, doing nothing special). With one client it dropped from the 30 to 40 range to 15 to 20. All of this is low graphics settings, so its rather bad.
I sometimes run 3 clients, but have not yet tried that with 1.1.....
Nothing special need be done to recreate this, its always there. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Thanks for posting, can you please try changing some graphics settings and post the results here? Some example combinations that would be interesting are Fullscreen with graphics at the High preset vs. windowed mode at High vs. windowed at High at lower resolution. Most importantly report if you find some one setting that has an unexpectedly large impact on performance, conversely it would also be interesting if lowering settings would not improve performance. This would help us narrow down what might be causing this FPS drop for you. I tried a slew of things last night to alleviate the problem so I could play, with no avail.
1. Single Client, Low Graphics: Setting all graphics settings optimized for Performance (mostly all to low or shut off completely) did absolutely nothing to fix the issue. Maybe it was raised a single point from average 7-9 FPS to 9-10 FPS but it wasn't noticeably different.
2. Single Client, Removed Overview/Bracket: Changing my overview settings and removing ALL BRACKETS raised my FPS up to 15-19 FPS, which is still above normal conditions for my brand new Mac.
3. Two/Multiple Clients: The problem is really shown when running multiple clients, it's exponentially worse over time. Making ANY changes to graphics or brackets did nothing. Slowly my FPS will sink to 1-2 FPS when I could run both clients perfectly well before.
It appears that I'm not alone, which is sort of comforting. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=125627&find=unread
Edit: I forgot to mention. I typically test in windowed mode. Full screen changed nothing either. |

Off topic but looking at your specs Lion would be the way to go. Especially with the 64bit porting they've made to more of their software. The upgrade was also the simplest I've ever had and was finished in a half hour. |

Thanks for this, you are correct that there are other players experiencing significantly lower performance with Inferno 1.1 and the issue doesn't seem to be isolated to a single platform or hardware configuration so far. For an example I have the same graphics card and OS version as you in an older Mac Pro and am not having any luck reproducing these issues. We're trying our best to dig through the data and find some clues, your help is appreciated. All eve settings on low or off. All effects turned OFF.
In station, Jumping, HDR, more than 10 ships on screen, asteroid fields will cause mac to loose frames down to 20 FPS from 30-40. Stuttering mac occur and freezing is not uncommon. as a example i was forced to quit the program 3 times while in a mission with 15 targets. Zooming in on missile/gun effects hitting my ship will almost always cause a crash if there is enough things hitting me.
Very very very very very disappointed with performance. This was the highest end macbook less than a year ago. My 2007 imac has the same problem as well as a 2008 unibody macbook and a early 2011 13 inch macbook pro.
Next to unplayably because im always afraid of loosing control of my ship at a critical point.
(EDIT)
Wile talking in chat i have crashed 3 times in the last 10 mins. All i was doing was autopioliting to jita and trying to talk to a guy. |

English language. Windowed mode. Running one client
I took some data on just what setting has the largest effect on fps. For this test I parked the ship a little above the Jita undock and adjusted the view to a typical "Jita cam" type scene.
I started with all settings low, and turned off all effects: 14 FPS. Turning off brackets as well: 27 FPS. Brackets back on, I found none of the "effects" lowered FPS. Setting shader and texture to medium did not lower FPS.
HDR on lowered it to 9 FPS. HDR off, post processing low, lowered it to 8 FPS. HDR off, post processing high, lowered it to 7 FPS.
Selecting the preset "Quality" did not result in further reductions, still 7 FPS.
Turning off brackets would in general double the FPS.
Note that when Inferno 1.0 was first deployed I was getting 30-50 fps in the situation where now I get 14. (Medium shader, texture, some effects on, brackets on). http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |
