Edited by: Fairhand on 23/01/2010 13:51:41 Out of interest, is there a Reimbursement policy for things like lost drones when the servers crash in this way?
EDIT : Yes, there is a reimbursement policy - thanks google.

My best thanks to the professional and experienced CCP team.
I would like to congratulate all of the server team for doing such a great job at giving the customers stable servers.
Also I would kindest thank you all CCP, for not testing patches before applying them. This would be too easy to make sure one can play longer than 24 hours without a server crash.
Hopefully you will make some changes...

yeah i find it quite ironic
Grinding up to level 4's, i was on a 3.
It was a good 3, with a confirmed 3 mil drop.
And i dropped 3 mil worth of drones from the crash. peachy.
My favorite part is when people all QQ about server downtime threads.
I gaurentee the number one method of decreasing server downtime threads is to decrease server downime, for the record.

1. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 3, 170¦C, 325¦F. 2. Prepare the saffron; in a small bowl pour the warm water onto the saffron strands and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, place the lamb into a large bowl and season well with the salt and pepper and spice ingredients. 4. Heat the half the oil in a large pan and brown the lamb cubes in batches then transfer to a large ovenproof casserole dish. 5. Heat the remaining oil in the same pan and cook the onions for 3-4 minutes until soft and add to the large 1.7/3pt casserole dish with the remaining ingredients and the saffron liquid. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and cook in a preheated oven for 1+-2 hours.

Oracle would probably have problems of its own....
The major part of the problem is using a monolithic relational database in the first place. Telco's over the world have tried that for multi-user close-to-real-time environments many times, and found they just don't work.
What CCP should have done (hindsight of.c.) was to use a telco grade distributed directory server. They're generally fast as thieves, and with the proper data schema (and use of it) can be expanded linearly almost without limits (ie. add server number 11, get 10% more performance... add server 21 and 22, get 10% more performance). There's a little bit of overhead, but not much....

Yes, London stock Exchange was doing everything it could too, along with direct MS help. On the other end of the spectrum you got NYSE running solid (only problems they have is when some server drops off the network by hardware glitch).

We are working with Microsoft on this problem. This issue is both at the highest priority level of their SQL Server and Windows product groups and it will be addressed as soon as they have a solution for us.
Note: To "fail over" is a technical term an operation on the type of SQL clustering we use, but that is called Failover clustering. (This is for those who think I'm confusing "fall over" and "fail over", I assure you that our server did not "fall over") ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games
CCP are doing what they can to get the problem eliminted...meanwhile, we live in the real world, where unexpected things happen.
Most people learn to deal with it.
I just wanted to compliment you on your never-ending effort to copypasta dev replies from early December BTW, do you get any goodies for quoting this in every other thread about a server crash? Could I get into this deal as well?

Hi everyone.
I'm Valar, the senior virtual world database administrator for EVE Online.
I'd like apologize for the outage we earlier tonight. We had a hard crash in the SQL Server engine and our high availability system does not work in the case of this crash bug as the server does not fail over properly. This is the same issue as last Saturday and also the same issue as the Sunday the weekend before.
