Is there some standard method for calculating a pod ransom?
I was caught in a camp in my Drake and once the ship popped, the perps attempted to ransom my pod for 30 mil.
To say I was insulted is to put it mildly - I thought I was worth more than that ;)
How do people generally calculate what sort of ransom to charge?

Why would you pay bribes ? I always tell them fat chance of you getting any money ot of me". I would rather loose 1b in implants than pay 10 isk to a camper. It's principal. Besides if you believe your not going to be killed after, your naive mate sorry.

I tend to go with 10mil isk or 1/3 value of the ship - whichever is highest. --------- War isn't the answer. However, the objective isn't to provide answers rather than eliminate the question. |

Depends on their age and sec status among many other things. If your ransoming a 5 year old guy and you just popped his pimped out mission boat and he has a 5.0 sec status its pretty safe to say he has good implants. On the other hand a good deal of -10 pirates pvp with expensive implants because they almost never get their pods caught in low sec. So really its just a guess.

Edited by: snipermurph on 25/01/2010 21:45:32 I believe it was our corp that issued the ransom for your pod, and although you decided not to take us up on our offer, I would like to point out that it is a strict corp policy to always honour ransoms.
In the very few instances where a ransom was paid but the pod or ship was subsequently popped by mistake (e.g. poor comms or bad timing) we have actually refunded the ransom.
In answer to your question about how we calculate the ransom, its largely based on what we think we can get away with ;)

Edited by: Triple Entendre on 25/01/2010 22:01:50 I don't know about anyone else, but I stick to a strict personal policy of honouring them. There's nothing wrong with the legitimate business of offering a person a buyback scheme on their ship/mods/exotic dancers kept in cargoholds/implants. However, people who smack or make threats post-payment forfeit all rights to not get squished.
As for the actual question, it's like poker. It's gambling based partially on their situation (What they were flying and how effectively) and partially on their reactions (Seems hasty to haggle you down while trying to stay 'friendly'? They're quite possibly carrying something worthwhile. Seems quite aggressive and defensive? See the first option). Also, as snipermurph said, it's usual to tack on whatever you think you can get away with. It's purely business, and everything has a markup.

Well, the ransom was mentioned in local and just as soon as it was typed, one of your guys popped the pod.
I convod him to ask what the point was in asking a ransom when they were going to pd me anyway, and he said they decided that it "was a good time for them to GTFO" so they just podded me.
The implants I had weren't worth the ransom being asked anyway, but it was the principle of the thing :)

Edited by: Radcjk on 26/01/2010 01:16:40 I usually charged 30 to 100 mil, depending on the age of the character. Anything younger than early 09 usually got squished how ever. Lower ransoms for ships or pods don't net as much isk per se, but the fact they're more likely to be acceptable and paid can make them worth while. After all, I've already decided to risk looting your ship for every thing or nothing (opposed to ransoming that too), so I'd either get paid or make another kill. By that time its really no big gain or loss.
Spelling edit.

Edited by: Doktor Feeelgoood on 26/01/2010 01:28:08 I base my pod ransoms loosely on character age, number in my party and what I just killed. I ransom most wormholers pods for 50 if I'm alone or with one other person, but if there are 3 of us then the ransom goes up to 60 because it splits 3 ways easy and we pirates cant do math too good.
You always have to ask for enough to make it cheaper for the person to pay you than to replace their ship.

To me I'd rather lose a 1B Loki an my 700mil isk implants than let you get them, its just the principal of screwing a pirate before he screws you. Thats why if I get ransomed first thing I do is eject all cargo an blow it, then set self destruct.
if the ship has died already I just tell em to kill me :).. never let em have anything you can prevent :D

100 mil, or 10 mil per person who is in on it. It's high and most folks don't pay it, but then again, I'm not a pirate, so I'm not trying to make an actual 'living' (whatever that means in a game). But a good rule is that it is easily divisible by the number of folks involved. Why bother making the math difficult.

that's isk you are going to lose anyway, its spent an gone the second you install implants an fly the ship into lowsec.... you have already accepted loosing it. But paying isk to be allowed to escape... leave it out.

Ransoms?
I won't sugarcoat this. This is a very bitter post. Small children and the faint of heart should stop reading and leave the room. Here's my side of the story: In asserting that mediocrity and normalcy are ideal virtues, yet the prevalence of ransoms demonstrates an astounding narrowness of vision. It's easy to see that the C&P community is nuttier than squirrel dung, but let me tell you the rest of the story: If ransomers gets their way, we will soon be engulfed in a Dark Age of cameralism and indescribable horror. That's why I'm telling you that these mongrels have a different view of reality from the rest of us. I'll say that again because I want it to sink in: They believe, in their elitist delirium, that the purpose of life is self-gratification. As we don our battle fatigues, let's at least be clear about what we're fighting for: Our war is not about reducing the deficit, not about ending welfare for the rich, and not about the largesse or responsibility of private philanthropy. All we want is for pirate apple-polishers not to sentence more and more people to poverty, prison, and early death. I think I've dished it out to pirates as best as I can in this letter. I hope you now understand why I say that this truth will be as pertinent six years as 60 years hence.
