It seems to have been quite some time since a company has wowed me with glimpses of it's digital beauty. I think the last best game engines were the Crysis engine and maybe the last unreal one, but that seems to have been years ago.
DX11 has reared it's lacklustre head, Uningine looked okay, some of the features were interesting, yet it lacked the wow factor.
Anyone have any linkages to share regarding the possible future of gfx, or screen shots that may add a glimpse of hope on today's pretty good, but rather mundane graphics engines.

All next gen graphics has gotten us as a gaming community is overpriced art deco games with no actual gameplay. Toss a few scripted next gen graphics trailers on youtube and next thing you know you can sell a $15 expansion to a popular fps game for $10 moar than the normal AAA game price of $50..
And it is still selling at $60.
I blame each and every one of you sad console monkeys for the current state of gaming because you unflinchingly flock money in hand to whatever has the shiney.
Me personally I have gone retro and only play games that actually have gameplay even if the graphics are only functional and not omg****worthy.

I prefer eyefinity.
seems to have a crapload more practical applications, and it's actually compatible with normal screens.
for NV's 3d googles you need a compatible screen, AFAIK. ---

How about they just hold still for a couple years and instead find a way to do V-Sync without adding 100ms of mouse lag. Then I'll be happy. ___

nVidia's new chipset is awesome, and will fix many of the issues which currently plague EVE - jaggy shadows being one of them.
The future contains the following:
Increased polygon count per model Increased shading effects Increased lighting quality (real-time) Accurate Physics Infinite distance draw Accurate Scale without stutter (frame rate does not suffer due to graphics load, as the graphics scale to maintain frame rate, this would help those with a low-end graphics card as the LOD alters on the fly to manage frame rate)

I agree with you to a point, but better graphics is not the killer of ingenuity, the game industry as a whole is responsible for this, and marketing types. I heard from a friend in the games industry that it is more expensive to create a new IP, this is probably why we have the same crap year after year. . Anyhoo's, better graphics is not soley in the realm of consoles, I would say it's very much a PC thing.
Consoles will never be able to keep up to PC's, the 360 and PS3 have reached their peak whilst the (top end) PC far exceeds the visual quality.
Granted, games don't have to be 'shiny' to be great. I still love retro arcade games, 8 bit platforms upwards and many old PC games, still, it's nice to see things progress. Reminds me of the other day when I saw aliens vs predator on stream, it's a freaking awesome game, but you can appreciate progress and how far things have come.

Have we reached a point of diminishing returns with graphics in top end titles now? Call me a luddite but graphics are probably at a point where they are 'good enough' for me. I'd much rather see big strides in AI, physics, story! now.

Not true. At least one of the screens has to have this DisplayPort thingy or you have to fork out lots of cash for an adaptor. Also, I don't think it works with 120Hz screens (whereas the nVidia 3D thing requires a 120Hz screen ). ____________________

still seems more practical than 3D, since you can use it for something other than games ---

I agree. I was simply refuting your point that it works with normal screens. Because it doesn't. ____________________

Wasn't there a program that allowed you to run in very high resolution and then compress it to fit in your screen, resulting in some kind of uber AA?
IIRC it was intel only though

Hmm, not heard of that - but what you are describing is super sampling; taking something and increasing the resolution say, 4 times, and then scaling the image down to desktop size, giving a much better IQ and removing the aliasing effect. Hence: 4xSuper Sampling.
nVidia's new gfx cards will have 32xAA, can't wait to try that out.

32xAA is stupidly high, and not needed - 8x is more than enough, so I don't think we'll be seeing loads of AA.
I'd hope that instead of 'better' graphics, we get more immersive graphics. Like already mentioned, raytracing would be a huge step forward in realism, that and advanced particle simulation.
More facial and body realism would be a plus. ---

The thing that started with DX9 wont get any easier .. That to produce a higly detailed game requires alot of work. So we probably have DX 12 before the potential of shaders is beeing videly used. With that I mean that when we have DX12 the first Good titles to use DX 11 technology are finished/available.
I wonder when they actually make a new, good and interesting game. There hasen't been many of those recently.
So to sum it all up. Graphics are not that relevant. I dont buy games for their graphics. _________________________________ -be vary of the men behind the curtain-
