What happens when you detonate a bomb in space?
Is there an explosion? it is space after all.
My wife recently made fun of me whyle playing eve becuause our ships catch fire and smoke at low hull *in space* =p

You would get an explosion it would chuck bits all over the place and they wouldnt slow down unless they bump into something. I'd guess if you stand next to the bomb when it goes off and none of the bomb bits hit you would notice, appart from the odd bit of vaporised bomb casing wafting by.
You can have fires in space, low hull would indicate a breech in the ship. Oxygen escapes catches fire, carbon based life forms and their stuff get in the way and make smoke.

I don't really see why our ships cound't burn, since those ships have atmospheres and loads of combustable material. Rockets are usable in space too, so ofcource there can be fire in space, but all the ingredients for the fire have to come from us. Most of the fire should be inside the ship and just venting out. I'm not sure how it all should look when venting into space though. I would guess the effect EVE uses is very unrealistic though.

A nuclear or chemical bomb would be useless in space as they rely on air pressure to do most of their damage and there is no dense atmosphere in space to cause a pressure wave. However a bomb with lots of shrapnel would be ideal as the chunks of metal would fly out hitting your ship and causing damage.
There was a great article on real space battles that talked about this, it was posted on these forums not too long ago, anyone know what I'm talking about? ----------------------------------- New Eden Chronicles: Prime, Fanfest 2010 |

Explosions wouldn't be much good against a ship because there's no pressure wave to cause damage. The damage would come from bits flying outwards at high speed. Of course, this makes an explosion in space very dangerous for an unprotected ship or man-in-a-suit. If you're unlucky enough to be hit by one of those shards, it doesn't matter how far away from the explosion you were. Distance merely reduces the probability of one of those bits heading your way. ____________________

I don't know what you mean by a chemical bomb, but a nuke is far from useless.
A nuke doesnt depend solely on it's shock wave.
A nuclear explosion is primarily electromagnetic radiation (Thermal, x-ray, microwave etc), the shock wave is caused from that radition exciting nearby matter. This can cause massive heat damage to anything close enough. Definitely enough to completely fry a human and take out a space ship. This is worse if an enhanced radiological warhead is used (IE neutron bomb) Depending on how close to the nuke and the composition of the ship, there may also be sheering due to thermal expansion.
Finally a nuke would propel it's now vaporized bomb case at incredible velocities. It probably going to be a drop in the bucket compared to the radition, but it still someething if you are close

I think you are underestimating how damaging shrapnel can be. Most anti-armor munitions depend more on kinetic energy penetration rather then shock wave.
Also bear in mind the kind of speeds an orbiting space craft usually achieves. For example watch the first 5 minutes of the first episode of Planetes. It starts with a tiny screw, utterly WTFPWNING a space craft. Now imagine someone trying to do that intentionally, and he has a bomb that throws off tungsten flechettes

As far as fire in space, it is actually possible.
There are substances that will burn in space because they provide their own oxygen.

Edited by: Sazkyen on 27/01/2010 20:59:42 As it has already been pointed out by other posters, there's no atmosphere, which largely lessens the effects of a traditional explosive since a shockwave cannot form. Ofc the small pieces would achieve very high speeds so they could certainly pose real danger.
Also discount all weapons that rely on the presence of oxygene. Obviously, these wouldn't be effective.
A minigun would still be quite dangerous though
In space, unimpeded acceleration allows for ridiculous speeds, so, as said earlier, small pieces of shrapnels could really wreck havoc.
You would have to use self-contained explosives (I'm not really sure it's the right term) that don't need external components like oxygene.
I would imagine that high-pressure "bombs" could really obliterate stuff. E.g. think of some container that has some serious pressure inside and then the container is compromized by a small explosive, raining small pieces of metal on the target. In my opinion, in space, something as simple as a fire extinguisher could be quite dangerous when it explodes.

This line made me laugh a little. I know what you mean, but it still made me chuckle.
