Dr Glenzer of the National Ignition Facility. Tells us that they know how much energy is needed to start nuclear fusion via lasers and their machine can reach it this year. They are installing shielding for the neutrons that will be produced by a successful ignition.
I hope it works.

if it happens this year, it could solve a lot of problems overnight, and I mean a LOT.
No more coal plants, or plants that burn oil. less dependence on foreign products worldwide.
I hope it works too.

It'd still take 20-50 years for fusion plants to be developed into mainstream power plants and build in an amount that can replace the existing power networks. A great step, but hardly a overnight change. --------

If it works as simply as it could there would be a massive investment in the research which would speed up development of plants by a huge factor. ----------------------------------- New Eden Chronicles: Prime, Fanfest 2010 |

The immediate effect won't be on how energy is produced, but on strategy and planning of future projects. Currently it is just a possibility, but no one can start planning future projects or energy strategies on it. Someone needs to actually show it can be used to produce energy and that it can be done in a controlled fashion. Knowing it is a real option might also reduce the intensity of the struggle for current, limited energy resources.

"It's going to happen this year" If they try a controlled fusion reaction within the year, methinks a whole lot of people are going to die.

using lasers to create fusion...
well, if it takes less energy to do it than you get out, I could understand its appeal.

Sad but true. Coal is cheap hence extremely profitable.

Edited by: CrazySpaceHobo on 30/01/2010 21:27:22 Fusion has already been achieved many many times, you can build a fusion reactor at home if you've got the materials and a bit of skill.
The trick is to get more energy out than you put in.

It's a different technology, but "america invented nuclear fusion" sounds so much better on television, right?

As I understand it, the main problem here is to actually sustain a long enough reaction to create fusion energy that becomes self perpetuating. The current experiment has only managed to create fusion for 10 billionth of a second (thats already been done in the UK at a plant thats trying to study dark matter if I remember rightly). Fusion energy is the panacea to all our current energy woes. You can bet that if the experiment becomes succesful in a meaningful way the big energy power blocs will try their damn hardest to scupper it. Russia relys heavily on its oil (and more importantly) and gas exports, the Arab world depends solely on its oil exports as do many south american countries. Right now it isnt a threat to them but it can become one. Imagine energy that comes mostly from sea water .. cheap and free. Who can claim the rights to that? I'm sure some git will try thats for sure. As for those worrying about the weapon possibilities of this? Dont care. The earth is more likely to be destroyed by a natural disaster than a nuclear war.
Hope it works and hope it becomes all that I dream it will be and more.

More likely they will bid huge amounts of money into it to get the rights to the patent. At least, companies that have the foresight to be successful will; every other fuel source available is either finite or doesn't produce enough energy to make it worth maintenance costs.

Placing high odds bets now that UK will discover practical fusion energy before the US. And that the US will in the future, try to claim the discovery as their own ... like they tried to with the invention of TV. |

It wont work as the inventors and the prototype will suddenly dissapear along with all blueprints and research data.
All the while as the oil price keep going up.
Then in a few years research into fusion technology will become illegal because it would destabilize the world order(brining the price of oil down). The car companies is already starting to pull money away from research into electric cars for this reason, oil will rule the world.
And with control of electronic systems and dataflow all over the world they can keep anyone from thinking anything bad about it, they will spin the protesters as 'terrorists' and 'anti patriotic'.
The older generations have no problem with passing laws letting the goverment go through all electronic traffic, looking for anything they want as well as banning anything they want(violent compter games and such, anything the goverment dont agree to) but dont see it as restricting freedom, its simply 'keeping children safe'. As soon as anyone start talking about restricting what can be read about in newspapers, as well as reading their mail they start shouting about facist goverments and dictators, not seeing its the same thing.

I don't like the undertones of your reply. The invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with oil. Surely this is obvious by the way ALL dictators are dealt with by the west. Iraq, Africa, North Korea etc |

Uh, Hellooo??? Robert Mugabe? The west got rid of him and there was no oil involved ... only the increasing of democracy for his oppressed subjects. And north korea has been sedated too. OK so not by military invasion, but by diplomacy. They had no oil either, but by carefully placed sanctions (a form of soft war) they have turned North Korea around to be a contributor on the global stage.
Maybe it is YOU who should check your facts. |
