Now I think it is mostly universally recognized that the Procurer is one of the most useless ships in the game. Since, as a mining ship, it really fails to mine a large quantity of minerals in a given time, and at the same time, it takes only 15ish hours to train up to MBarge III in which you could buy a Retriever which has double the mining capacity.
Right now I am looking at the training prerequisites to fly a Procurer and a Retriever. They are identical except that a Retriever needs MB III.
Currently. The time it would take to train for a Procurer would be 11 days (This would vary depending on learning skills). This is a major gap between training for a Procurer, and then training for a Retriever.
My thought, is that Mining Barge's prerequisites could be changed to require Industry lvl III instead of Industry lvl V which would basically cut 7 days out of that training time. While at the same time, the Retriever and Covetor can have a prerequisite of Industry lvl V added to them. (Since the only prerequisite to fly a them are MB skill).
The only thing that would change, is that a Procurer would not take so long to train for. Obviously anyone dedicated to becoming a miner will go to a retriever->covetor->hulk. This proposal is simple to let non-dedicated miners get to the Procurer.
Thoughts?

This would actually make a lot of sense....

It would help new players mine in something a bit more serious than a cruiser, which seems to be the first real step after one of the mining frigates.
I did my stint mining in a Vexor and it would have been good to join in with a little Procurer when we went on those corp mining ops during my first month or so.

I don't think Ive ever seen a procurer in space.
Creating a starting point for newbies who want to try the path of a dedicated miner sounds like a good idea.

I've seen one ONCE.
I then proceeded to laugh at the poor soul. Wondering if he was simply too poor and desperate to wait for a Retriever.
That is the status of the procurer in this game

I think I've seen one once as well, similar reaction. Lower the prereqs so it's useful for new players.

Agreed, make the little buggers easier for the nubs to get at training wise.

Actually bonused cruisers (gallente dont have this) are -better- than a procurer with t1 stripper...

Vexor, you get the bonus on the mining drones. It is not exactly part of the mining frigate->mining cruiser->barge path as you usually use the drones for defence in a mining barge, but it work well as a mining cruiser for drone users.

You use it to mine ice when you are very green in the game and no one explain to you how useless it is.
To my shame I brought one as soon as I was capable of using a barge.
I doubt it ever paid back its cost.

Food for thought:
Using that same logic, could you not argue that the Covetor is somewhat useless at well, given a hulk is but spitting distance away in terms of training time? I suppose the only real benefit arises from the drastic price difference. |

Why not just use an Osprey instead? AFAIK it gives more yield than Procurer :p I do agree that it could be nice if it was looked upon, since it's useless. -------------------------- 2 Years later, mining continues to be the most overlooked game mechanic in Eve |

Covetor requiring mining barge V is a bit too step, still the price difference and insurability means that covetors have their little niche - procurers dont have any

I've used the Procurer once because i wanted to see for myself why it sucks so badly, and the main reason i found to be that it has such a tiny capacitor that it can't make any kind of warp. This is a big issue (full cap gives you something like 25-30 au if i recall it right) as it don't let you warp back and forth to belts (mining without a dedicated hauler in highsec because of canflippers)
To make the Procurer really usefull it would need to get it's warp cap use lowered so it can at least make say a 50au warp with full cap.
Sure it is worse then an Osprey but if you are a dedicated miner you wouldn't like to sink a day into training cruiser skills to get you into one of those ospreys (with enough of a bonus to be any good) but as it is now why buy it, simply waiting for the retriever is better.
/Supported - but change the warp cap thingy too

Kinda funny as mining barges are technicaly cruser class. onto the OP seams like a resonable idea the current only use of a procurer is to upgrade to the T2 model

I do know this, 'more serious than a cruiser' meant something actually dedicated to mining, rather than being a military vessel with a few mining lasers stuck in the high slots.

Anything to help the procurer would be good. Was easier to mine in a Tormentor and cheaper to boot.
The baby barge has to be the single worst ship I've seen.

Though. The Covetor is about 120 Million more cheap. Which makes a difference for a player like me.
Though, if the Covetor has anything less, it would be too easy to get from Retriever to Covetor.

very bright idea, I fully support...
I hated to mine in a cruiser... I did. Procures are cheap and can be first step for beginner miners. It's what they should be.

Edited by: Mike C on 02/02/2010 21:39:33 With a cheapo faction co-pro, the rokh outmines the covetor (yes the mining guide is wrong, deal with it). If the Mining Barge prereq was removed and proc prereq lowered to astrogeo 4 (Mining efficiency has to stay mining barge for balance reasons vs other barges), any other feasible ship (even most unfeasable) would outmine it. My REDEEMER (Amarr BOBS) would outmine it.
Skills are all Astrogeology 4 Mining 5 T1 mining upgrades. Factor in T2 mining upgrades and the procurer is humiliated even more. Modules are Modulated Strip Miner II (Veldspar Mining Crystal I) or Modulated Deep Core Miner II (Veldspar Mining Crystal I), but it doesn't really matter so long as the modules are uniform.
- Procurer: 928.745910m¦/sec (928.74591m¦x1 MSMII-VI)
- Scorpion: 1365.25648m¦/sec (341.31412m¦x4 MDCMII-VI, outmines even with Miner II)
- Cyclone: 1706.57060m¦/sec (341.31412m¦x5 MDCMII-VI, outmines even with Miner II)
- Osprey: 975.183210m¦/sec (325.06107m¦x3 MDCMII-VI)
EDIT 1/1: However if there was some Civilian Strip Miner and Civilian Mining Laser Upgrade almost as effective as T1, I could see this. The procurer needs a flat out buff (Increase in Mining Laser Upgrade efficiency?)

I think the Industry V skill was to slow down the macro miners a bit. Most of the macros are more geared to mining barges and making a Procurer easier to train for means macros would use them as a preference while they wait for the remaining skills to train. Since Macros don't care how long it takes to mine a roid, a Procurer would be as good a ship as any to use.
The only way I could ever see CCP reducing the pre-reqs for any mining barge is if they manage to significantly reduce the number of macros currently operating in the game. Considering that macros have been a major problem for the 5 years I have played, you can guess what the chances of this idea being implemented are.
