I have looked around on the forums to see if others have experienced this problem but couldn't find any up to date posts. Basically what I experience is this: When running lvl 4 missions with many NPC ships targetting me at the same time I get very bad performance graphically. The problems gets better as I shoot my way through the NPCs so it seems to be related to the number of ships targetting and firing at me. I have the same problem during ninja-salvaging if the mission runner warps out of the mission pocket and the NPC's attention gets directed to me giving further support to the above mentioned theory. Have any of you guys experienced something similar and if so, do you have a workaround to fix it ? Tried lowering shader quality which did nothing.

Have you tried, to turn off all effects like turrets, missle explosion and stuff? This gives my lowend machine a few FPS, especially when there are a lot of missles. --

No I haven't - how do I do that ? Another thing that puzzles me is that I really have a decent system and don't think I ought to have these problems ?! Maybe it's server side ?

You either can do this thru Keyboard-Shortcuts or in the Escape-Menu. (General Settings, I think. Enable Caching under the GFX-Tab) Possibly you should have a look at your GFX-Card settings thru your Operating System. (eg. Nvidia and Windows go to the Nvidia Controlpanel and set your Card to performance instead of quality. ATI has similar setting-tab. If the lag decreases, it is clientsided.)
Naturally lag increases with the number of entities that are displayed, so turning on all they Eyecandy will only make the problem worse.
If it is server-sided you need to get out of systems that have a hundred plus people runing missions and another 200 plus sitting in belts and stations. Compare missions in crowded systems with less populated systems.
Although the server-side lag has decreased IMO. I had certain complexes, where I could not warp-in as tank in the past, because of the warp-in lag, where my repairers would not work for a minute because I nearly timed-out due to server- and clientside lag. Haven't tried it with the latest patch, though. --
