I can only confirm OP's problem. I am experiencing the same, though putting this into user.reg helped me to start the application:
Quote: [Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] 1267716040 "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="backbuffer" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="none" "VideoMemorySize"="256"
But it works without hardware acceleration, slowly.
Quote:
fixme:d3d_draw:drawStridedFast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glDrawElements @ drawprim.c / 47 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d_draw:drawStridedFast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glDrawElements @ drawprim.c / 47 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 fixme:d3d:sampler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glActiveTextureARB @ state.c / 3521 f
this is repeated many times in the wine log. But then application crashes anyway, allowing me to enter the login and password, showing miscellaneous progress windows, but not progressing to the characters list display.
Changing "VertexShaderMode" back to "hardware" kills the application before the password prompt.
Debian unstable. wine 1.1.37 - game installed into a freshly created .wine directory with 'winetricks d3dx9' executed wine 1.1.39 - the same GPU: Intel 915 compatible (82915G/GV/910GL) 256Mb Dominion 6.21.127381
So far I have no luck starting EVE under Linux. And I have no idea as to what to try next. Does anybody have positive experience with EVE on Intel 915 under Linux+wine at all?

I am running Debian unstable amd64 and everything works fine.
@Panterus it seems that you have troubles with your graphics driver. fixme:d3d_caps:init_driver_info Unhandled vendor 8086.
pls post your card/chipset and how you obtained and installed the drivers.
@Fiodr The Intel 915 has really a ***tload of issues. It is not particulary strong on windows either. There are many windows players who can start but not play eve due to their weak graphics card. Sadly I don't believe that you will be able to run a halfway modern game with wine.
A friend of mine plays baldurs gate on a i 915 with wine but it has to be old enough.

Edited by: Markham Raye on 05/03/2010 01:35:32 I'm having the opposite issue. I got EVE up and running on Ubuntu 9.10, upgraded to kernel 2.6.32 running nVidia driver 185.18.36 and Wine 1.1.31. My problem is I'm getting pitiful framerates around 19-21fps on an AMD Phenom II 955 quad core. I'm running 2 GTS250 boards in SLI mode and was pulling over 100fps on Ubuntu 9.0.4.
I suspect the game is rendering in software mode since I don't hear my machine's fans kick into high gear like they did before. GPU temps are remaining steady at 45 and 42 degrees respectively. Previously they'd be up around 90 degrees.
Hardware acceleration is enabled and nvidia kernel module is installed. I've set up the recommended Direct3D values in the registry and I'm at a loss on why the game feels like it's molasses. Essentially unplayable. My Mac Mini runs the game faster.
The game's not crashing. It just isn't running well like it used to. Any suggestions?

I don't think it is even possible to play Eve now with i915 graphics chip, because they changed the minimum shader requirements. And the i915 also needs software emulation of the shaders anyway, which I don't think fully works on the linux drivers.

If you are using such a new version of wine, AFAIK there is no need to do anything with vc-whatever or any dll files. Just make sure that your graphics driver is set up properly and you have direct rendering enabled. One thing you may need to do is run the 'winetricks corefonts' command. If you do need the vcrun2005 or vcrun2008 stuff, you can also install that with winetricks. Another thing you should probably do is move or remove your ~/.wine directory, since it could have settings and/or libraries that are making things not work.
