The demo is out on Steam, let's all decide whether it is good or not in this thread, one reply at a time (extra points for not playing it before voting either way).

I played a single match so far (With an Alien), and I have to say it's quite fun. It was bit laggy, but demo doesn't have dedicated servers, so I'll let that slide. Aim-assist makes melee combat a bit too easy, in all honesty, and so far most of my combat was either doing the trophy kills or mashing light attacks in their face. Also, I still can't figure out wtf is going on when I start running on walls.

My main complaint is that the controls feel a bit loose and inconsistent. Sometimes I press grab and nothing happens, sometimes I am grabbed from the front. I cannot figure out how the counter system works as it seems to be terribly inconsistent as to whether I actually block or not/whether I counter or not.
A lot of it though I can chalk up to lag, and so when the game launches a dedicated server will likely be a lot better. I also am optimistic that they will adjust some of the code to tighten things up a bit, that is typically the kind of polish you put on right before launch so we will see.

Where are my extra points
EDIT: I just read your second post Asuka and my bet since it is AvP is that it will not be made brighter. Then again I do not know how dark it actually is

This is the original AvP story line and by all technicallity the third game in this interation (as a shooter there is one rts out there) Which is based on the comics novels and the sorts and has a larger fan base than the movie ever did.
This is Colonial Space Marines vs Aliens guest starring Predators in a kill everything to survive game.
instead of... Aliens vs Predators geust starring dawson's creek cast in a horror film movie. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 27JAN10

Edited by: GM Horse on 05/02/2010 05:43:20 I honestly am disappointed, especially when I compare this to the multiplayer in AVP 2. The melee feels jerky and unnatural, the aliens feel slow and awkward, and really, the game feels more like a bad console port than a real PC game. That sadly seems to be true for the majority of titles these days.
That said, I will reserve judgement until I get my hands on the full game. The game looks beautiful, and is brilliantly atmospheric.

Wasn't even aware of the game's existence until I saw this thread. Cheers chaps.
Downloading the demo on Steam as we speak. Hope this lives up to folk's expectations.
I'm a great fan of gamnes that involve sneaking around and ambushing unsuspecting players with an assortment of interesting weaponry, and then running away to hide again (perhaps I was a Goon in a previous life), so this would have to suck pretty bad for me not to like it.

bets on how the Predator will be overpowered?
I remember the point score on AvP2. Both marines and aliens were like between 20 and 40 or 50 or summat, and killing a predator would give you like 200 points or smth ---

They don't seem too overpowered in the demo... mowed through 2 of them with a pulse rifle before an alien jumped me from behind

Not had a chance with the predator yet, they seem to be a favourite. Aliens seem kinda cool, their attacks seem to be a bit slow and the marines are utter crap imho.
It feels as the the marines walk in concrete boots, hope the make them a bit smoother on release.
Amusing game, but still needs some love and smoothing out.

Not really. Their cloaks are bit crap against aliens, they only start with their wristblades, they are quite slow when not sprinting (And their cloaks do not do crap when sprinting), they are quite a big target (If you try to charge a marine from the front, you're toast.) compared to an alien, and if you get jumped by an alien from behind he can very well kill you in 4 or so light attacks.

Edited by: Simeon Tor on 05/02/2010 21:23:55 I never played AvP 2 or any related games, so this was entirely new to me.
The first match I played was as a Colonial Marine, so the first thing that struck me was "oh dear, I'm against the other two". The screams, alien/predator battlecries and post-death gunfire coupled with the ever increasing beeping from the radar made for a good atmosphere too. And then I was impaled by a Predator, which made me laugh a little bit.
I've been sticking to Aliens and Marines most of the time though. I'd say that Aliens get the most interesting kills while Marines have the most interesting deaths .
Overall I'd rate it a 7 out of 10, that might be high but I think it's accurate. Can't really rate it until it's released.
Edit: Regarding what GM Horse said about aliens being "slow and awkward", I wouldn't say they're slow but they can be awkward when moving from floor to wall or wall to ceiling. If all else fails, you can always sprint away to a dark corner.

this happened in the singleplayer mode of the first AVP:

Try AvP2. You'll notice how big of a dungheap this new demo is. The alien controls were nigh perfect in the previous game, whereas now they're...
You get my point.
If the full game is even remotely like the demo, this game will suck. Unless you play it on consoles of course. Then it'll just be okay.

Ok, so I had a few games, and Im not sure yet. First, as Im an eejit, Ive not been able to figure out how to switch races yet, so Ive only played as Predator and Marine.
The Predator MAULS Aliens. The Vision mode totally destroys the one advantage the Alien has over the Pred, that being their ability to hide in the shadows and get them from behind. The Pred's melee is so much better than the Alien's that on several occasions despite being ambushed, I still managed to kill my opponent with relative ease.
On the other hand, the Pred is pish against Marines. Heat Vision offers no real advantage in most situations, as the Marine has to go about with his torch active or be munched by Aliens, so is easy to spot. The problem with the demo level is, as far as I can see, there's only one ranged weapon for the Pred in the entire map, and until you get experienced at running straight for it -and lucky enough you don't get into a fight on the way there-, it's tough. With only your standard melee weapons, you have only one strategy that will work for a competent Marine player;
Cloak on, behind an obstacle, and remain completely motionless until he's right next to you, then pounce and mash the E key, hoping you get an instant takedown.
The trouble with any other attack is that as soon as you move, even while cloaked, the Marine gets a Motion Tracker blip. The Pred is a BIG target, and doesnt have the Alien's ability to come from an unexpected angle; if you attack a Marine with more than half a second's warning, he WILL waste you, cloaked or otherwise.
OTOH, if you CAN get to the Pred's blaster, you have to be really unlucky or plain stupid to lose. This thing is awesome, and one-shots the Marines before they even know you're there. Just make sure to switch positions quickly or an opportunistic Alien will follow the origin of the targeting laser and catch you unawares.
From the Marine side, providing you pay attention to the MoTracker and avoid very open areas and junctions with more passages than you can cover, Preds are not an issue; align with the blip, spray & pray, nine times out of ten, the Pred will go down before he gets to you. Aliens start off as REALLY annoying, but once you learn to sweep your light properly(ie, check the walls and ceiling too) when you get a MoTrack hit, it comes down to reaction time.
As I say, without playing it: the Alien will probably end up getting mauled and be seen as weak at first, but will soon be mastered by those who persevere and become a proper pain in the backside. Once people master leaping from shadow to shadow, constantly re-orienting themselves to avoid easy targeting and ambush tactics, the Marine will have a real problem dealing with them without being grouped up. Taking down Pred's reliably will probably depend on getting the drop on them while they're busy trying to kill someone else, it will be vital for the Alien to hit them from behind and get the E key kill.
Overall, it's a good larf, and playing the Marine is certainly atmospheric, but Im not sold on it yet, Ill have to play a lot more rounds before Ill throw down actual money on it. _____________________________________________ Of Riches and Slaves - Adventures of an Amarrian Noble |
