There are more recent versions of it from the 90s. There are also other games that have been made in the same style since then. ----- 'In Eve, as in real life, if you are bored it's your own fault.' |

bull****, that game is point and click manual fire isn't it?
That's nothing like eve, I mean eve borrows heavy form it, but it doesn't come close to being the closest game.
there is a one player game, that I finished and can't remember off the top of my head >.<
it was a game where you clicked to target, and you activated guns to fire.
no manual flight no manual firing. let you set up your modules in your different slots.
it even had eve like pacing and I know people should know it >.<
the plot had you in control of an alien ship? it had a tech demo that never become a game? anyone remember ??
p.s. I love elite

Edited by: TriadSte on 07/02/2010 11:14:36 Your thinking of the X series of games from :
www.egosoft.com
I myself have completed them all, however I agree that this game very much resembles "Elite" or the better sequal Frontier : Elite 2.
Its very much the same as eve as far as what you can do within the game. Work for military, be a pirate, haul stuff for cash or simply do things from "the bulletin board"
Thing is the Elite games had one feature which I actually crave from Eve, landing on planets. The gorgeous scenery that could be created in Eve coming into land...

I wouldn't say the essence of Eve as a game is in the precise way that you do combat.
In Eve and in Elite:
You're a lone pilot. You own a ship. You buy equipment for it. You travel around between different systems. You trade, mine, shoot stuff, etc. ... to make money. You can be attacked by pirates. You can hunt pirates. You can do missions of sorts. Once you have the money you buy a better ship and better equipment. And so on...
Eve is basically Elite Online with travel and combat systems adapted for being an MMO, and a bunch of improvements added on (corps, alliances, POSs, sovereignity, etc. ...). ----- 'In Eve, as in real life, if you are bored it's your own fault.' |

I guess you havent played it then. It was quite remarkable for its time and exceptionaly good fun.
Quote: The game was highly influential upon later games in its genre. In interviews, the senior producers of CCP Games have cited Elite as one of the inspirations for their acclaimed MMORPG, Eve Online. Thorolfur Beck in particular has said that Elite was the game that impacted him most on the Commodore 64, and that it was the prime motivator behind Eve Online.

Manual docking in Elite when I didn't know about a docking computer, man did I lose ships in trying. :P
For kiddies; you had to 'spin' your ship as you landed since stations rotated around their axis, duh!

Gotta love when pirates took out your autopilot and you had to dock manually with the last save being hours ago. Successfully docking then has a feeling of true achievement.
Oh, and for the OP, try Masers of Orion II as a preparation for planetary interaction. --------

On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss.
Its iconic use comes from the movie 2001 a Space Odyssey.
But yeah, it was a classic game. Amazing that people are still using this 26 year old game as a benchmark for space combat and trading.

Yes it is similar to Elite and X3 etc.
But actually it is the FPS mode for Sins of a Solar Empire or Galactic Civilisations 2.

Well, the closest most recently for me would have to be Microsoft's Freelancer. But MS no longer supports the MMO version/servers. It was superior to EvE in terms of graphics, but lacked in some other areas.
In the distant past what started me off was Privateer by the now defunct Origin software company. The makers of the Wing Commander series.
I would love a remake of all the Wing Commander games done in today's graphics standards.
I've heard X3 is a lot like Eve. Been thinking of checking it out.
