I hate netbooks.
This girleh asked me to fix it. It has a rootkit because she was using IE 6, and the rootkit runs as the process iexplore.exe. It redirected me from downloading Avast when I clicked on the link from google, wouldn't let me install it (I had to manually fight it and end process every time it came up). Spybot would not execute. Did a boot-time scan using avast, and it came up with several viruses, none of which deleted the rootkit. System restore will not work and I can't boot into safe mode (virus killed both of those). Netbook doesn't have a CD drive so I can't simply reinstall, so unless I can get a bootable usb to work I'm going to have to give up and let her send it into manufacturer.
Any other options?

rebooting/reinstalling from a USB memory is probably the best option... getting a USB DVD-drive may be the quickest and dirtiest, but a portable DVD drive is a really nice thing to have lying around (for when the drive in your regular computer breaks down, as it will invariably do).

Edited by: Zylithi on 08/02/2010 02:26:18 Edited by: Zylithi on 08/02/2010 02:22:20 If the netbook takes windows xp, its fairly easy, if you know where to look.
You'll need a flash stick with 2 GB of space.
Get a program, called RMPrepUSB. This will format your flash stick to be bootable. Remember, the partition cannot be more than 2 GB. Ensure to select a DOS format under the options, and use FAT16; not FAT32.
Next, install DOS on the flash stick. If you've done the previous correctly, all you'll need to do is copy the files over, as the first thing it'll do is look for an execute COMMAND.COM.
At this point, I'd recommend looking up for how to set up smartdrv on the stick. Yes, i spelt it right. If you don't do this, merely copying the files over could take 4+ hours.
Get yourself a Windows XP CD (retail/OEM; dont use any of the "tweaked" crap-packs that you get off of certain websites), and copy all the files over onto the stick. Ensure that you preserve directory structure ie. D:\I386\ -> G:\I386\, not G:\XP\I386\
Now, go into the bios, and change the boot order, after you've stuck the stick in (You may have to enable "USB Legacy devices" for it to appear under boot order). Bootup into dos, and look for the WINNT.EXE or WIN32.exe file on the drive; I don't remember exactly where it is, but it's there somewhere. This should be enough to bootstrap the xp install process.

Have you tried GMER http://www.gmer.net/ Have you tried http://malwarebytes.org/
Download on another machine and copy across with usb stick.
Run GMER first, then install malwarebytes, but change install directory and then manually change the mbalm.exe to something else'.exe and then run it.
Also you can run try this site to configure a bootable USB virus checker.

Malwarebytes is awesome. I know exactly was virus you are talking about too. Malwarebytes gets it everytime. Though one version deletes the executable as its installing. Easy solution, when the exe file gets copied into the directory, you have about 10 seconds before its deleted. In that time rename the exe file and then run it. All is solved. ----

In the past whenever I've run into a browser/desktop hijack, these two tools have always aided me in getting rid of the malware. Them along with a HijackThis scan can be pretty effective during a situation like yours.
I know how you feel. Material of this nature affect us all in different ways. What you need to do is learn from this. And this is just my sig. |

I know your pain. Except instead of a possibly cute girl asking me, it's my dad begging me to fix his computer.
He downloaded something called "Internet Security 2010" ...Disabled the Task Manager, disabled Safe Mode, infiltraited the System Restore. I thought I had it partially fixed about 2 days ago. (ad-aware managed to delete some of it, I turned off the PC and went to bed.)
Woke up the next morning to find out my dad now blames -me- for what's wrong with his PC.
Why you ask? (Actually you probably didn't, but I'm gonna tell it anyways. ;P)
Well, you know when you have more than one account on a PC and you turn it on, it takes you to that screen that lets you choose which account to log onto? Well, my dad wouldn't tell me a name to name his PC when I was setting it up several years ago, so I named it "My Dad's Computer" ... anyways, his computer is now taking him to that log-in screen (which it hasn't done in YEARS) and because it says "Turn off My Dad's Computer" at the bottom left (where you can decide to turn it off, restart it, or standby mode) that somehow means, in his mind, that I'm the one doing this to his computer. <_<
Also, can't even log in anymore. Click on the user, it says "loading personal settings", shows his desktop image, then immediately goes back to the user selection screen with "logging off" under his user.
(Warning, rant ahead)
AND THAT'S ANOTHER THING. Why the hell do PC's not come with reformating disks anymore?! They used to! A-hole companies. I paid for this PC, I paid for this copy of windows, YOU SHOULD GIVE ME THE DISKS FOR A REFORMAT, DANGIT.

The last 3 Computers we bought, haven't. Two were E-machines, the most recent one is a Compaq. They come with a partitioned drive, but everytime I try and use it, it tells me to first insert a CD.
I think we bought my dad's at Warlmart, the one before that at Best Buy, and the most recent one I bought off of NewEgg.com

I found your problem right there.
PS: Most of these no CD computers have a 'return to factory condition' .... I suggest you ignore the 'condition' part and just return it to the factory .. they might need a door stop.

But the other two we got at other places also didn't come with CD's :P and yes, they're return to factory partitions.

Edited by: Marko Riva on 09/02/2010 00:27:20 You get what you pay for, one way to lower cost (and thus consumer price) is by not providing discs but rather have the customer make them himself. Or by using an install partition OR by not giving anything so that you'll have to take it back to their customer service, which is going to cost you.
If you buy cheap thinking "well all of these got 4GB ram, or any other number you think is the great equalizer (hint: there isn't one) so I'll go for the cheapest, then you'll get exactly what you ran into.

Because it actually runs fine on a netbook?
You don't buy a netbook to get 360 fps in fleet. You buy a netbook to check email, browse internet, you know, businessman stuff, without having to lug around a 20 lb laptop. ~~~~~

My apologies for the unclear post, the emphasis was on the _windows_ part, not the _netbook_ part. Everything you listed could be done much more comfortably and safely on an OS less prone to viruses and other malware, such as GNU/Linux. Netbooks weren't designed with windows in mind. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

Even if it did run normally (which it just hardly does on the Atom 1.6GHz CPUs that most netbooks ship with, and doesn't on ARMs most future netbooks will ship with), there's still the issue of viruses, rootkits, spyware etc. If you don't actually need windows (eg for a specific application that doesn't run on any other OS), there's no reason to use it. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

my laptop is a bit over 4years old now and has a 1.6ghz processor
and will certainly be interesting to see what happens if the industry does swing to ARM style processors. saw something speculating win 8 or 9 would.
windows is just so much easier, it would be great and all if the public wasn't 50% under 100iq and could deal with such things but bleh, I'm rambling.

ARM processors? Aren't those the ones that are usually used in hand held devices? I suppose netbooks are almost small enough to be considered handheld. Would be interesting if a RISC processor ended up being more efficient than a CISC processor in computers. ----------

Windows is the problem.
God... I cant imagine running Windows and Internet Explorer even again. That would be like going back 10 years for me.

Decided to go at it with a hacksaw again today. My first attempt at creating a bootable USB failed. Malware bytes is running right now, but I think Avast is now catching it. What I assume is iexplore.exe is trying to run, and everytime it does, Avast kills it.
MB just found an infected file. We'll see if I can kill it without rebooting, I think I can.
