They told me it was impossible, but I managed anyway to lose a Cheetah to a gatecamp. I have a talent for succeding in failing where others have failed to succeed failing :)
How do you experienced cov-ops pilots approach large gate blobs, should I warp in from the side 100km out or not try at all with large camps. I could not make up from down either inside the blob, is it possible to tone down the "lightning effect" a bit client-side?

More likely than not everyone that has told you it's impossible to lose a cov ops has probably lost one or two themselves so don't feel bad. The best thing to do is create bookmarks about 200-300 km off of the gate in a direction that does not align with any other gates in the system. That way you can warp in cloaked and see if there's a bubble or whatever without the camp ever knowing. If there is a bubble just warp to the gate from the "side" of it(if that makes sense).

Edited by: Krikx on 09/02/2010 18:02:02 Like DSM20T said. It is always possible to lose ships even cov ops ships. They definatly help reduce the times when you will lose a ship however.
Like he said, use warp in points above and below the gates to scout it out. Camps will put bubbles 30+ km off the gate to pull you out of warp before you are close enough to make a run for it. Warp in above and you can see if it's safe and if you are aligned well enough to get through.
Remember that getting within 2K will decloak you. So if you get pulled out of warp but are still cloaked yoo can manually pilot to the gate around objects. This also adds a nice rush as you see orbiting ships come within kilometers.
If you come through a gate and are inside a bubble. Take the time to measure the situation. You have 30 seconds before you decloak so use it to prepare. Turn on session timer in options so you know how much time you have left. Are there fast lock ships that you think could get you before you cloak up? Decide if it is better to run back to the gate you came in. If you wait for the session timer to be up you can scramble back to the gate before anyone has a time to pop you if needed.
And above all else. Know the area you are flying in(not always possible). The more you know about where people tend to camp and how they camp the safer you are going to be.

Thank you for the helpful tips, it really does make sense to have bookmarks off the sides. I guess warp to zero straight into a huge camp like I did is suicide, even for a cov-ops. One problem I have when trying to get out of a bubble is figuring out the shortest route out, with the static effect of the bubble making me loose all sense of direction.

I find that using the tactical overlay helps with the horizontal plane reference.
It also lets me judge the relative distance to other ships when in close prox. No absolute, but it does help

Zoom out to gain perspective. Set keep-at-range to 100km, and use it on one of the campers on your side. That will set your ship on a leaving-the-bubble course.
Also, tactical overlay, as the previous poster said.

Did you put a cloak on it?

Hey, I lost a Cheetah in Jita, at a gate, to a completely random smart-bombing a-hole. All sorts of stuff can happen.

@OP:
As a covert you're only as good as your bookmarks, you just figured that out :) If you are an active scout you should devote time (lots of time) to BM every interesting thing you can find, gates, stations, interesting POSes. This can take a lot of effort to have to BM a whole damn region (or at least the more active/useful parts of it) but the result is more safety.
I normally have BM's at 150-200km from gates at odd angles so I can simply warp to the BM without fear and then have a looksee at what's on the gate. If there's a dictor bubble I'll keep waiting if the dictor leaves a small gap between every new bubble, if it's permanent or a hictor I'll check if there's an angle I can warp onto the bubble that would grant me safe passage. Once warped into the bubble I'll inch my way to the gate or leg it if uncloaked.
BM everything, your home systems, hostile areas, new areas of operation, jump bridges (also check where they lead to), cyno jammers... everything!

All good advise if the space is known to you.
If your out and about when you do not have the time to bookmark, try the following.
Almost every gate has a planet nearby (if they do not find a suitable off angle approach that does not have a station or gate in-line).
Warp to the planet at something other than 0km and 100km as these are most common.
From the planet (as these locations are not in line with gates and stations), directionally scan to get an idea of the gate camp.
from these locations, because they are not in line with stations and gates, any bubbles they have up will not catch you (very rare they put a bubble up on an off approach).
Go in at 100km and burn away to set up a bookmark...and most importantly, get in a stealth bomber so you can warp cloaked.
If you can't, then warp to zero and jump the gate. Chances are you will never get caught (except on the otherside).
Did I mention SB?
P.S. I have no experience in such matters (peers around innocently).
