Never watched the show. Don't know who he is. But he's never done anything particularly bad on a global scale.
So it's a loss and he has my condolences. Fly safe, Cpt Phil Harris, Fly safe. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

I knew the guy was dying the moment I saw the first couple episodes. He had a look of impending death about him. Those bags under his eyes, the voice, etc. Still, a good life - better to live less but well, than long and miserable.

Smart people say bad things about people who die.
It's a excellent way to look superior.
Well done!

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 11/02/2010 06:21:18 If you ever ate crab that originated from the Bering Sea there is a chance this man had something to do with your meal.
Also, Grimpak, his diet also included 6-12 Red Bull a day Then man was a sailing time bomb. Good thing he went out while docked up.
May he rest forever in the deep blue.

One of the worst mistakes of my life was living off of red bull for a several years while I worked a night shift job and tried to keep somewhat of a social life. I'm 19 and have had 2 heart attacks.
I wish I could say I was surprised he kicked the bucket, but I give my condolences regardless.

Heh, try again..
He mentioned on one of the episodes that he smokes over a CARTON a day. There were times on the show that he was actually smoking 2 cigs at the same time, one in each hand. He would start out with a cig in one hand, forget he had just lit a cig, reach for another one in the free hand and light it.
I watched the show a lot. It was interesting to see how much money they make crabbing. Also interesting to see the whole process and know, that the crabs they got, were the same crabs you eat at places like Red Lobster, or Joe's Crab Shack.
It was also interesting to see how much the deckhands got paid also. If they were on a good ship, they would make 30k - 50k in a few months of time.
A 10th of all I earn I keep for myself. |

EDIT: to anyone who didn't know, both his sons were crabed on the boat with him, I wonder if they will take over?

I believe he had a stroke and his oldest son is suppose to take over.

While the stroke may not have been directly caused by a clot in his leg, the cause of his death was definitely associated with the same risk factors.
What was cool is that the sons got into the boating as the show progressed. Captain Phil was tied as my favorite captain along with John Hilstrand. I really enjoyed watching these two Captains run their boats. It made me wish I had taken up the offers on the college billboards to make $3000-5000 in two months and got lucky to get on one of their boats.
If I remember correctly the older son came in for a season early on and then left due to not wanting to hack it. Then the youngest son came on board and kicked ass. The older brother then came back to save face. They progressed fast, but I believe the oldest brother just started running the boat for the first time last season.
I wish them luck but I bet they bring in one of the other guys with a tad more experience to help out.

For sure. As I remember, the elder just clashed with his father and had a problem with dealing with the authority. He did not want to work as hard and felt like he was entitled to rights on the boat that he had not earned and felt were due to him since his father was captain. He then left with a slight chip on his shoulder since he did not want to earn his spot/full share, if I remember correctly. But yes, he returned to show that he was the elder and more capable son.
