Edited by: Zylithi on 13/02/2010 00:15:16 GREAT, just great. You've started something.
1. Bears whine about defender missiles being useless. Troll suggests laser defense, and points to this topic. 2. 6 people agree that it's a great idea. 3. 26 ex-goons declare Jihad on anti-missiles defense topic, and post random garbage. 4. Topic locked for out-of-topic material. 5. 6 months goes by. 6. Bear gets owned by a Raven, and posts on the forums that laser defense should be implemented, again linking to this topic. 7. 3 trolls complain about opening an old topic. 8. 6 other bears agree it's a great idea. 9. 26 ex-goons again declare Jihad on anti-missile defense topic, but are too busy fighting can flippers in empire to contribute anything negative to the topic. 10. 12 pirates complain it's a horrible idea. 11. 14 wardecs ensue as a result of said topic. 12. Topic gets filled with nothing but flames. 13. Topic closed by mods again for out-of-topic stuff. 14. 6 years goes by. 15. CCP implements laser defense randomly, buried in page 216 of the patch notes. 16. 9 days later, somebody discovers said implementation in the patch notes. 17. Value of ravens plummet, and all missile boats become just novelty items. 18. Forums ignite. 19. ??? 20. ??? 21. Profit! ~~~~~

But its not futuristic. The majority of the technology to make the lazor 747 was around in the 50's its just taken this long to get the computer power nessasary to actually make the thing work.

Even the computer power has been around for donkey's years. This is the thing about military tech; it lags behind commercial tech by several years because it needs to be so rigorously tested before it's put into service. Defence engineering projects can often run into the decades, so by the time it's in-service, the hardware used is ancient. And often, very new products will be required to be compatible with existing systems in planes, ships, etc, further increasing the "oldness coefficient" of the hardware. ____________________

Its also complicated by the fact that all electronics and electrical gear in the US Military at least, are required to be hardened from radiation. An I-touch, while awesome, will fail mil specs.

and this is why imo even as lasers progress that ground troops will prefer projectile weapons for decades or even centuries to come. an EM field might melt the chips in a laser or energy weapon but that trusty M16 or AK-47 is still going to kill enemies even if electronic wizardry is disabled.

I doubt lasers will ever replace guns. For a laser to do as much damage as a bullet, it would need a phenomenal amount of power. ____________________
