Edited by: Zhilan Sun on 15/02/2010 21:48:30 too start, I played eve for a year or so a few years back, about the time "Red moon" was coming out. back then I played with matari ships and I still have a good understanding of how they should operate and be flown. I started eve a few days ago again and I'm flying amarr ships.
the problem is I have no idea what makes a good fitting or what ships are actually viable for PVP. from what I'm getting is that amarr ships are vary sub par lighter than BC's and there are only a few actual PVP set ups and even then they are only so so. adding on the the fact that half on the tech 2 ships don't even use lasers I'm having a real hard time knowing what to train or better yet what to be using.
any and all advice on amarr ships would be much appreciated!

Edited by: Culmen on 15/02/2010 21:59:28 Welcome to last year. Amarr's Tech II cruisers are probably at the top of their game. Depending on who you ask, they are the Fit Of The Month, or are just coming off it.
Tech 2 Medium Lasers on all ships that get a bonus for it. Neuts on the Curse
Armor tanks for almost everything. Exception possibly being made for the Curse, which works fine with double extender tanks, depending on how you like em. For amor tanks 1600mm plates on everything getting closer, you fine with EANM + DCU for sniper zealots.
But yeah, laser WERE useless up until they got patched. Now Scorch fitted pulses melt faces at ridiculous optimum ranges. And Beams deliver some of the highest damage at long range in the game.
Add the fact that the Revelation is bar none no contest the most deadly non-super cap anti-dread ship in the game. and you'll find the amarr are pretty damm good at PVP now.
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

They're have my favorite tech II cruiser hulls and I can fly all of them. Exception being the tech 1 cruisers, which i hear they are pretty weak in. Zealot rules the sniper HACs, but the Munnin is looking to usurp that throne. Curse is the only recon ship that can take down an active tanked BS in short order.
I don't like BSes so i wouldn't know, heard good things. Frigs size, i dislike em, think they are second worst or the worst, below Caldari. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Pretty much, almost everything good about Amarr comes from their T2 crystals or T2 ships.
Yuki is right thogh, and the Arby does a good job, Though its not my favorite. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Zhilan Sun on 15/02/2010 22:22:13 wow, now i feel depressed, why do people fly amarr ships anyway? from what im seeing they just have inherent design flaws. they use every item in eve that is massively dependent on cap and get slightly better cap's on there ships, while having insane power grid costs for there weapons. so even if you wanted to do high dps you cant even use all of your slots.

To get to the kick ass tech II stuff Most of Amarr's short range superiority is their optimals are the longest of all short range turrets. They are the only close range turrets that are living in optimal, and hence getting full damage. They also have the highest DPS long range turrets (albiet at a lower range).
You can probably do well with just tech II weapons, and get the tech II cruisers later. More so then any other race Tech II pulses really shine above the other turrets because of Scorch ammo. not that the faction crystals arent good, its just that they aren't much better then other race's turrets. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Amarr has some decent T1 Cruisers and Frigs.
Frigs: The Executioner is a good tackler. It's not going to do decent damage at all, but what tackler would? The Punisher is the toughest frig out there thanks to the huge resists it can get.
Cruisers The Arbitrator is a good drone carrier. Though it's not quite as good as the Vexor. The Omen can put out the damage of a drake, a BC, but is far more mobile. Of course it won't have the tank of the drake, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper and harder to hit for big guns.

Edited by: Dorah Hawkwing on 15/02/2010 23:24:38 Crucifier: 2 high slots 1 MWD, 2 Tracking disruptors 2 Sensor augmentors
Lock range 90 km's..
What other T1 frig can make a BS turret pilot cry for less than 500k isk?
Maller is very tough boat, huge grid. On a lark, I outfitted one with 2* large smarty. So feel free to experiment. People will asume it's tanky bait though.
Omen: as said above, agile DPS, either with focused beams or pulses. Arbitrator: Thanks to the 4/4/4 slots it's an extremly versatile ship fitting wise. You can nano it, shield tank it, passive tank it, have it neut, tracking disrupt, snipe (drones, heavy beams), squeeze an oversized shield booster and a high full of vampires to feed it, fit with drone mods to make your warrior II's go 11 km/s.. etc. The vexor is specialised on drones, the arbitrator has versatility (also thanks to it#s huge drone bay, it can field 3 different flights of meds)
Allso, coercer is a neat destroyer with good dps and decent range. Anything small in lock range wil at least have to take lumps.
BC: Prophecy: very tough tank Harbinger: Fast PDS, like an omen, just more
Battleships: Amargeddon: DPS monster Apoc: Range sniper.. go 90 km#s with pulses, or 200 with tachyons Abbadon: Tanky with good volley damage.

Only bad about Coercer as a destroyer is the lack of utility mid for tackle.

Bah.. Amarr have the best overall line of ships in the game for your sp investment. It just that the sp investment takes a boatload moar level 5 skills than any other race. But if you are willing to pay the price they are quite simply the pwnsauce.

Not really. This alt is only specced in minmatar and whilst I had to train moar skills overall than my amarr alts to fly the entire minnie line of ships the overall sp investment was actually less as capless weapons and passive tanks knock a crapload of skills back to easy to train level 4. Amarr must have nearly perfect skills in all areas to truely shine and be considered fotm.

If you are worried about t1, Harbinger is probably the best overall BC and it is no secret that Amarr Battleships are also considered the best. Amarr are somewhat SP intensive, but not any more than Minmatar.
Go with Amarr, you wont be disappointed in the long run. Amarr cruisers seriously lack quality though apart from Arbitrator.

Having maxed gunnery and all support skills really makes the BS hulls shine. They really are a high-sp race to fly competently, more so than even minmatar (controlled bursts 5 makes lasers bearable, while minmatar pilots might spend the time training trajectory analysis 5 for roflol falloff). Less speed than the other gun boats is usually compensated by excellent scorch crystals, giving close range dps at maximum gate radius distances. This is also balanced a bit with less utility in the form of fewer midslots. Forcing you to either forgo a speed mod to fit point/booster/eccm on the geddon or losing the eccm and trying to somehow smash a speed mod on with no grid remaining with mega pulse. However, some ships like the Abaddon and Navy Geddon (<3 <3 <3) have enough spare fitting to get no-compromise setups if you play around with it. ________

They're both as bad as each other though the skills end up overlapping quite massively once you start skilling for T2 amarr boats when you start to need missiles.
Also skimping on your shield skills will lock you into a very amarr shaped box, since in fact there are some nice PvP nano / gank / tracking enhancer fits which use shields.
Harbinger BC is absolutely awesome and a nano shield fit ( can do pulse and beams ) will easily keep up with plated cruisers and HACs. Concentrate on this, the inties and the vengeance.
After that look into the the T2 Larges, they are a heavy spend on SP but if you need them then you'll find scorch again adds a lot of flexibility.
A reasonably well specced PvP / PvE Amarr character ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- you seem determined to turn it into ******* Hollyoaks for neckbeards. |

Yes but still on top of that minmatar are again far more versatile and generally better for anything but blob warfare in PVP.
And SP argument for amarr vs minmatar is that cap skills are far easy to train compared to cruise missles that you will need for typhoon and heavy missles and active shield tanking where amarr just specialize in pasive shield tank , on top of that if you play with cyclone you will still need good cap skills only skill you can skip is controlled bursts. You will need more for missiles all around for minmatar then amarr i believe amarr can go with just heavy assault and rockets where minmatar can use heavy missles on top of that very good and standard as well as suport weapons.

lol, just so I have this straight.... The guy asks for advice and feedback on Amarr, and you are going off about Minmatar? :p
No one doubts Minmatar capabilities, but lets keep it on subject for the guy. :)
To the OP: While you are leveling up your skills, pick up and outfit an Arbitrator. The drones do most of the work, and its a very forgiving ship while your laser skill levels are coming up to par. I am doing the conversion to Amarr from Caldari, and although its been rather painful on the skill list, now that I am hitting 4's and 5's in more of the relevant skills, the difference has become dramatic and very enjoyable. After so long as a missileer, the instant gratification of pewpew with lasers has made it a whole new game again.

Long story short - pick minnie - train only cap, armor and gun skills, and fly in a classy rifter, rupture and then hurricane. While you are busy killing people, train up your laser skills, and then the amarr ships skills - makes the waiting more bearable, and rewarding, since you can keep flying that rifter, then rupture, then 'cane till your lazer skills top out.
You need the armor, cap and gun support skills anyways - so really the only time you are "wasting" (if you dont EVER intend to fly minnie ships) is the time spent training projectile weapons, and the time spent getting minnie frig, cruiser, and BC to 3/4. The former will be 10 days at worst, the latter (ship skills) 3-4 days. You can reduce the 10 days much lower if you decided to not use t2 guns - you can just fit the meta 3/4 t1 guns and have fun.
Try it out in evemon - I did a while ago and am having fun in Minnie ships while still training full speed for Amarr pwnage.

The Amarr HAC's are okish, the zealot is excellent as a long range sniper, and is pretty good at armor tanking HAC fleets + logistics. The sacrilege however is really "meh" imo. A Drake does it better than the Sac as a missile ship.
The Harbinger is probably one of the best BC's out there. When fitted for shield/nano, it has outstanding dps, and have excellent range/mobility/utility. Makes for a good soloroamer, better than the Hurricane imo.
Amarr's BS's are among the best. Superior firepower at range with the best armor tanks, makes them shine in remote repping fleets.
For caps, Archon has best armor tank, revelation got good dps/no ammo usage/good tank, Aeon = 50m+ ehp..

Amarr ships tend to be quite overshadowed in the lower tiers by the other races, but really start to excel as you move up the ship ladder and as your skills grow.
Amarr ships are amongst the most skill-intensive; in other words you won't do very well in them until you really put the training time in to laser and armor skills, at which point they become quite deadly. This is different than many of the other races/ships, where newer pilots can be effective early on with fewer skills.
Long story short if you are in this for the long haul, you'll find yourself quite rewarded eventually. In the mean time you'll get your butt kicked by most of of the other ship classes. Once you get up to BS/BC/Recons, however, you'll do just fine.

Only thing about Amarr that's giving me headaches are the limited mid-Slots on most of their ships.
Aside from that, you have to think about how to fly ships with ridiculous optimals (above frigs). Even the Omen can obliterate other cruisers when you keep in mind, that they are kinda designed to fight between 15 and 20k. Being bricks and not the fastest ships available WILL get them into scram/web range, but then it's a matter of miliseconds to switch to high dps short range ammo to overheat, blast away and cross fingers.
Cap is an issue, though. :)
Punisher: massive tank. Up to 12k ehp without faction or implants while still dishing out ~90-100 dps overheated (autocannons *gg*)
Omen: fast, quite agile DpS Arbitrator: drones, anti-turret and cap warfare.
Harbinger: together with the Cane the best BC arround
on BS-Level, Amarr really shines. Geddon is awesome firepower for low bucks, Abaddon is Tank'nGank in it's finest and Apoc is one of the best Sniper-BS ou there.
Tech-2 Cruisers are in a class of its own. Curse, Zealot, Pilgrim, Sacrilege. Everyone of them just rocks in what they're built for.
Amarr really isn't a bad choice. It's just a choice where T2 Mods are quite mandatory. :)
