It's really stupid that you can potentially lose months of subscribed time by forgetting to upgrade your clone.
It's one thing to make loss an integral part of the game... it's another altogeter to make it effectively non-existent unless you happen to forget to click the [ ] Don't **** Away Months Of My Subscription checkbox before undocking.
Another little "gotcha" that just gives me the mental image of CCP flipping us all the bird.
This should probably be automatic, or removed completely.
It's utterly ******ed and such obvious revenue whoring that it hurts. I would seriously pause before flushing any more dollars down this crapper of a game if I ever actually lost any SP to a podding, and I'm tempted to say that would be the straw that would break the camel's back leading to biomassing & subscription cancellation.

Just update your clone after you got podded and you are fine. Don't be to lazy..it's Eve ffs.
Removing of this feature is not good..losing your pod should cost you money.

It does 2 important things.. It means you actually loose something in a death (a little isk and your implants) and it makes stations with medical facilities somewhat valuable.
I do agree however there should be an automatic options or some sort of popup asking if you want a new med clone after the shock of getting podded wares off.

you undock and move a few jumps and then you're like "oh ****, I forgot to update my clone"
then there are no stations in your system
you pull up the map and spend 15 minutes looking for the nearest station system with medical
I mean **** that ****, its not fun, it doesn't add to the gameplay
I hate to break it to you but there isn't a subtle skill of clicking "Medical" and "Upgrade" and "Yes" (although I understand this sort of braindead interaction does qualify as "skill" in the eyes of many of you)
you just lost your implants and your ship, do you really think a few mil for a new clone matters? If so, have it automatically charge for the clone as I suggested in the OP and remove the aggravation.

I do not undock without updating my clone and I won't undock without fitting my ship either.

Anyway is it a sever death penalty? yes, its rather wrecking if get podded then undock and get podded again. But this is eve, its suppost to be harsh and make certain people rage quite.
And the skill if you want to call it that is paying attention. When you get podded, first thing you should do is update that clone. When you switch skills, look at how much sp you have and look at that number below it. If you got less than 1 mil difference, you should think about updating.
Also as someone said, it does make stations in null sec tha thave clone vat pays a little bit more special.

Next you will be asking for your ships wreck to me 'transported' back to your station so you can keep your stuff.
This type of hand-holding has ruined other MMOs (EQ).... We dont want it to ruin Eve.

Haha, fanboys to the defense!
I guess you really can find somebody to defend every little, crappy designdecision the developers made. Not that this is a particular bad one. At least there is some logic to having to upgrade your clone (though not having to upgrade jump clones anymore kind of kills that off again).
Speaking of JCs, I find that having to stop and resume skilltraining manually for a clonejump far more annoying than having to upgrade your clone once in a while. Not to mention having to leave the active ship first and then wait for some amazingly nonsensical timer before actually being allowed to jump.
But I guess someone will defend that crap, too :)

I lost 25 days on marauders V and countless other skills on another toon. Grow the **** up. EvE is a much easier place than it was in the past. If you want training wheels, go to WOW.

I do agree with auto-upgrading, there should be a pop-up thats telling you its auto-upgrading, and you have to cancel it to not upgrade, also it should alow you to get into the red to get a clone. Where you need to buy a new clone or upgrade a clone before you die.
Even in the eve storys there a guy who shoves a contract in your face right after you get cloned.
This helps
- people who have to pay 100 million for clones
- people who havent goten poded in well over a year
- new players to the game who didnt do the turtoral, yes people skip because its boring or have a friend to teach em.

I'm not sure if you think you're being clever here or what, but I did intend to imply that the mechanic needs to be front and center if its going to be involved at all. I keep referring to it as the "[ ] Waste My Time" checkbox to illustrate how asinine it is currently. It should be a regular part of the game, or not at all imo rather than being some ******ed ****ing trap CCP puts in there to catch you not following your internet spaceships launch control checklist like the huge ***s awesome posters above suggested, or training too long without upgrading.

You have to understand, no matter how big and bad your ship is, you will loose it. So why bother trying to keep it? You have to let go of all the false hopes that CCP has put in front of you- advanced skills, big ships and weapons, clones and insurance- leave it all behind because it's all baloney. The best ships in the game are frigates and your best weapons are you friends. Be prepared to die over and over and over again, like it's an FPS. Every time you die, grab another ship off the stack, return to the fleet as soon as possible, and continue kicking butt. It's the only way to have fun in Eve.

Just like everything else in this game, it's a consequence. Forgot to take the 2 seconds to update your clone while in the same station you just appeared in, that's your mistake and you are now paying for it.
As for your complaint about having to spend 15 minutes trying to search the in game map, take 5 seconds to locate your region and then a nearby system with a medical facility station in it at http://evemaps.dotlan.net/. Easy enough?
