Personally I've always been fond of my folded steel katana. It's got great balance, and it's quick enough for personal defence. Recently, however, I've been looking into getting a zweihander, because sometimes you just need that extra stopping power.
I've been thinking of trying a rapier as well, but I'm so used to cutting swords. Anyone have experience with stabbing swords?

The amazing thing is that I could probably get away with a rifle slung across my back in public as long as it was unloaded but a sword would most likely get me arrested or at least the sword confiscated. BAN SWORDS!

Sorry dude, you need a sword with stopping power.
I'm sick of seeing hajis that take 3 stabs to centre mass and keep on running.

I carry a Microtech SOCOM automatic with a tanto profile blade in D2 tool steel. Anyone who carries something as archaic as a simple folded steel katana for self defense is a fool. I'd at least expect anyone with common sense to carry a katana produced with more up to date materials.
My SOCOM works equally well for both stabbing and cutting. It's point profile performs exceptionally when penetrating body armor up to class IIIa (without a strike plate). It's also holds an edge well enough to shave with. It makes a good short range weapon for the 0-3' range where my firearm may not be sufficiently dexterous or safe to use while in such close proximity to my body. The good news is that my sidearm will take care of anything outside that range, which is the best part about not having a katana.
Tamishigri aside, katanas these days are pretty useless. I like mine for Tamishigiri however. -- Bellum Eternus Inveniam viam aut faciam.

I also own a Katana, but I can't seriously claim that it's more efficient than a firearm. It isn't a comparison. However, I prefer the precision and the how shall I say, intimacy of the weapon. Call me sadistic, but if/when a burglar with a handgun breaks in, tries to hurt me or my family, I want to see the look on his face as he is cut down. The fear.
Where I live it is LEGAL to carry a sword so long as it isn't concealed. (lol) you still can't take it anywhere that guns aren't allowed but in public it's fair game. Police can hassle you I suppose but they have no legal grounds to do anything. |

Yes my family on my mother's side served the shogun in southern japan back in the day. The blade has been shortened twice so its has been used before, and the handel is cracked, the current leather wrap is not original but its older than my dad still, but being a short blade it was probably broke in the past from deflecting an attack than just generally being used.
the two other swords on the rack are authentic made but they're mordern era, and the 4th one on the rack is the practice wooden sword.

This isn't a contest you noob. A Kotetsu katana is a very narrow thing as far as who made it and when, and what time in his life the smith made it, and where. -- Bellum Eternus Inveniam viam aut faciam.

I havent bothered with the sword's exact history in the same manner my mother's familiy doesnt bother with me much. I'll have to ask a person highly intrested in japanese sword history to get more answers.
And google doesnt have all the answers... Typed all parts of my family names and I get two wwII fighter pilots, a martial arts founder, and a manga artist, go figure... at least they're all from the same area so they might be related. EDIT: Thread content, My grandfather, and now I think my Uncle, owns a pretty old Claymore, but that's as much as I know about it really, I'll see if I can find out. I think it's late 16th century, but I'd have to find out.

This is a strange thread... only use for swords is decoration and maybe home defense. Why the hell would you carry a sword around with you all the time? Its just going to get confiscated, and first fight you get will find you shot.
However it is pretty cool image of everyone walking around with rapiers on their hips.

I find that leather pants are really good for this. Sometimes when I get an erection some sort of body fluid comes out and that fluid keeps my katana sharp and the leather soft.

Don't you understand?
People need to carry swords to defend themselves against criminals, and protect their freedom! What are you going to do when some person of color tries to rob you on the street? Just take it, or parry and riposte like a real man?
A blade-armed populace is a fundamental cornerstone of any free society. What would the world be like if we outlawed swords?

oh and im going to be getting a cane here soon as my ankle has been getting worse, broke it a few years back and when it acts up i can barely walk, and have decided to get a sword cane.
Where do you live Arvald? I'm interested because 'sword canes' are illegal in most of the US and classified as an "any other weapon" which is regulated under the US's "National Firearms Act" (NFA) which also regulates such things as suppressors, fully automatic weapons and short barreled rifles (SBRs). All of which are legal mind you, depending on the state you live in.
The BATFE tends to get really ****y about AOWs however. Weapons that are disguised to look like something other than a weapon as an example. -- Bellum Eternus Inveniam viam aut faciam.
