so there i was. autopiloting my alts badger 30 something jumps to my corps new home system. it had my meta 4+ section from my corp hangar in it. t2 modules and such. along with the salvage collection and a few other expensive stuff. i didnt think my cargo was very gankworthy. but i put the t2 modules and most of the salvage into a secure container to avoid it been seen with a cargo scanner. just as a precaution.
however, one mammoth and tempest duo thought otherwise. i had peeked over at the screen because i was hearing the locking sound, and saw a mammoth locking me. i was a few KM off the gate still, but i figured he'd just move on. BUT i was wrong. i get about 4KM off the gate in autopilot when a tempest locks me up. again i dont think its worth getting blown up over so i just sit and wait.
the tempest sits with lock on me for a few seconds. and then he engages. as i see my shield and armor melt away i think im toast and i just lost the most expensive modules in my corps hangar. but amazingly. right as he fires, autopilot jumps me into the next system. at this point alot of things go through my head.
i almost got ganked! i lived! i lived? a tempest couldnt one volley a stripped down badger? why did he wait to shoot till i was so close? wtf was he thinking? did he just lose a ship for no reason? i wish i could go back and tell him how much of a failure he is. that was so fail. he is so fail. i hope concord destroys him. did he lose his ship? etc.
im just thinking he must have been a noob ganker right?
just curious.
also, looking through my logs and i cant find the one saying how much he hit me for. but i think i owe my ship living to him stalling to shoot me? and artys slooooow cycle.
what do you think? does this happen often?

putting things into a secure container DOES NOT disguise them. Cargo scanner pierces it.
What DOES work, however, is to put your things into a container, then create a courier contract with that container. The cargo scanner will see through the courier contract, but only see a container.
I think you got very lucky. It costs a gank battleship all of a few million ISK to blow you up. If you have more then ten million ISK, you might be worth something to a bored ganker. Fifty million and it's a pretty sure thing. Over 100M, and you're asking for trouble.

If he was like me, he probably took so long to attack because he was cargoscanning you and tallying up the goods to see if it was worth the sec hit. All the meta 4 stuff might have been confusing since not everyone recognizes the names and/or knows the value off the top of their head.
That's why it's a good idea to sit your scanner +1 out so you've got plenty of time to calculate the value.

Reading the obvious mistakes and omissions you made, you sound like an OK match for him.

That guy was using an hauler to scan. It means he probably only got 2 accounts so he cannot afford a scout off the system (yet).

TL;DR
Using autopilot gets you ganked.

He'd have been better off with a gank cane then since you can boost their scan res high enough to scan with the gank ship. (i.e.: 3 scan boosters + 1 cargo scanner, 2x TE, 4x Gyro, full rack of 720s)

Can't believe he scanned you with a mammoth (seriously, wtf?!). Those things have lower scan res than battleships.

tempest has 6 midslots and decent scan res, should be easy as pie to scan you with that.
hell I could get a scan off on some shuttles when I was ganking in a raven. wouldn't have had time to gank em, or even the ability, but just wanted to see if I could, and what people would carry in a shuttle on ap.

It begs the question....why were you autopiloting with expensive stuff in the hold? Especially when it was corp stuff, not even your own.
You got VERY lucky and in combination with the ganker being maybe a little unlucky (poorly executed, a little unlucky), you survived.
His Mammoth was sitting there waiting to collect your wreckage (as it only scanned it doesn't get suicided). As it turned out, the Mammoth would have picked up all his modules that didn't explode, maybe even salvaged his wreck. I doubt that he's out more than a couple of million ISK.

Never ever come crying if you get ganked in an indy and if game and mission critical logistics regularly depend on you it's your responsibility to train for the tools you need and are provided by game mechanics or entrust it to those who did.
That being said lol fail ganker (edited)

Hello OP. You got lucky. A t1 hauler can be ganked by a T1 battlecruiser, possibly even a T1 cruiser depending upon how long it takes CONCORD to arrive. After insurance that means that the suicide ganker loses very little ISK, a couple million ISK. If you are hauling anything worth more than a couple million ISK then a suicide gank is "worthwhile". As such, let me offer you this piece of advice.
Don't haul in an untanked T1 hauler while autopiloting.
Ever. ----------

Sit the hauler +1 out at 0 on the gate with a bookmark to 5km on the gate you're ganking at. Once you find a target, follow him through the gate into your own system, then warp to the 5km bookmark. Set the target hauler on approach with your own hauler and alt+tab to the battleship account. By the time your BS has a target locked, your hauler should have rammed the target hauler, reducing its speed to 0 giving you a better shot.
