I too am worried about the longevity possibilities with DUST. As much as I love Halo and COD, the only reason they stick around is because they are updated and re-released every so often. Who still plays Halo 2 on a regular basis? I don't. I think the FPS jockies will move on to the next new game, and the next, and the next just like before, but that those of us who have a stake in Eve will continue to utilize DUST.
Expansions though brings up a question. How is CCP planning on updating DUST? Will they release a new disc, or do periodic downloads? If it's dling, my harddrive is full already, I may have to buy a new one just to support DUST eh? A new disc every 6 months, well, that could get expensive. -------------------------------------- Adrift in New Eden

I never owned a console, and I don't intend to buy one ever. If Dust would be available on PC, I probably would try it out, though.

well the plan would be to get some of them to start playing EVE before they move off to the next console fps, that's my guess. most people play some kind of mmo and fps's in my experience and since wow is now in decline it'd be a good chance for ccp to grab more subscribers.

You answer your own concern, all in the same post!
The difference between DUST and other FPS games will be that DUST will *always* have a solid base of players who are hardcore Eve players and who want the extra advantages that can be derived from having a standing army. That core playerbase, in turn, will have a multiplier effect as some portion of the typical FPS players who enjoy DUST will hang around and continue to play despite some other new FPS being released. It will have a further multiplier effect as some portion of those players then get into Eve to complete the experience. On top of that, unlike other online FPSs that may release a new map or such but basically remain static, DUST will likely be tied into the dynamic Eve universe/economy in ways that will keep at least portions of the game fresh. I'm speculating of course, but do you know of any other FPS where your teamleader has to worry about arms and equipment supplies by contracting with a 300,000 playerbase?
I think its a cracker jack idea and may redefine online gaming.

I wonder where this myth comes fromà
console shooters tend to have very short life spans unless they are the "IT" games like Halo or CoD, to stand a chance it needs to be better than them to keep enough people playing, if you have to wait around for matches people will just move on the the next new shooter.
In other words, console shooters are no different than PC shooters, and Dust 514 being released on consoles only does in no way change the risk that it will "crash and burn pretty quickly."
àwhich only leads back to the original question.
pc shooters seem to have a longer life, people still play counter strike and wwII ffs

Well CCP have been pretty good about regular updates. And the EVE tie in will provide a regular supply of fresh content.

I really don't understand all the concern here
1) There are more games out there already than just Eve right now, including FPS games. Having a new FPS game released from CCP isn't going to destroy Eve anymore than a Battlefield 3, 4, 5, etc. People play Eve for a different reason than people play an FPS, and lots of people play FPSs while still paying for their Eve accounts. It is ridiculous to suggest people will play one or the other.
2) XBox 360's OS is Windows at its core. It uses Direct 3D for graphics just like Windows, when you program an XBox 360 game it requires all the knowledge, programming skills, etc needed to program a Direct 3D based Windows game (which Eve happens to be). Even the programming SDKs from Microsoft are practically the same. That is the obvious reason why XBox 360 is the target console, because they can leverage their existing programmers and knowledge to write the XBox 360 game that they already have to Eve and have knowledge specific to integrating with the Eve universe, instead of having to higher new programmers with skills writing Wii and Playstation games.
That also means "porting" an XBox 360 version of Dust over to Windows is as close to trivial as possible, since most of your existing code base can be transfered over unchanged. So CCP can always put together a native Windows PC version of Dust at a later date if they wanted. That is not the case for Wii & Playstation, where the game would require more or less a full rewrite, so don't ever expect these platforms to be supported.

I hope it is as cool as planetside, but what made planet side cool was that it was a large open game that was persistent and wins and loses changed the gameplay, dust sounds to matchey, being confined to matches on small maps is why i don't bother with fps multiplayer games

It makes me laugh.

Adapter as in "translating m/kb into controller input", you mean I take it? Because just like the PS3, the 360 accepts mice and keyboards just fine – it's just a matter of the game supporting it.
…and again, UE3 makes it dead simple to provide that support. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Adding in m/kb support to dust could very well be the feature that truely brings in the numbers. A wired usb m/kb combo is around $10 at your local superstore and the wireless can be as little as $15 for a budget no frills combo. Thats less that a cheap low quality third party controller and would be and waaaaaay less than the pro pads with macro functions and such. Afaik no console fps game has supported m/kb before so it would be another industry shaker inovation for CCP. Now imagine once CCP proves that console players are willing to buy a m/kb for their game what will happen to the rest of the industry? Now imagine playing bfbc2 or mag with a m/kb instead of that goddamn twiddly controller stick. DOO EET CCP!

Dust is the only reason i kept my 360. also how could you "lose players to dust"??? its not like someone just stops playing eve to play dust lmao! all it will do is have people enjoy the game and see the ships above and ask "wow, i want one!!!" and then they learn they can get all sorts of ships on eve online... and then they play eve.
dust looks amazing!!!
i cant wait until it comes out.

Jesus Christ. Anti-console elitist much? A 360 isn't even that much money. You people act like you're spending all that money just so you can play Dust.
There ARE other games out there.
Maybe you should stop taking such a narrow minded view to video games.

Will I play it, yes. I have a ps3, and a 360. I would prefer it on the ps3, my 360 is mostly hosed up.
I will play because I've always wanted an fps that my actions mean something. if I kill someone I want it to be for a purpose not just to win this match.
I played tabula rasa, yes I know shame, but it had a good theme and could have been great.
Will I care if it's full of halo ****s, no I will use them for my ends. I will throw them over and over at my enemies knowing that they will do so willingly. I as an EVE player will use my money to help myself by contracting the merc corp I run with.
Do I think that this is a good thing for EVE, hell yes. do I think that it could fail, anything can fail. Do I think CCP has the drive and people to pull this off, DUH.
EVE started with what 10k players, and now has more players than Iceland has population. I have heard arguements that if DUST only has 10k people playing it will be a failure. I don't, it just means that mercs will be harder to contract. They will look at the availble contracts, select the most lucrative, and play contractors against each other.
To everyone who says that they want a pc port, CCP has already said it's not gonna happen. it's possible but they are not going there. I can see what they are thinking. PC players would have an advantage over console gamers, plus then it would compete with EVE. I personally will be playing both probably at the same time, and thus don't want it on my pc, I'm already running a eve client on both my machines.
To everyone I have not covered here. say what you may, but when it comes out you better man up, cus I'm coming for your crap, and I'm using mercs.

well so many people have said no pc no buy i hope they might open to the option of some kb/mouse support for consoles(same as pc right? but no pc and hopefully less cheaters)
i'm the same i have a flatscreen here doing nothing, 1 pc running 2 eve clients and another pc doing other stuff.
eve with 10k players :) wow wonder what that must have been like. i bet moo territory was empty back then.
and as for halo players. well they got jetpacks now that makes them one step above capsuleers in my book.

Definitely.
I've a PS3, and I'd be happy with it on there or on the PC (if ever), though I think I'd prefer it on the PS3 for convenience's sake. I wonder if, if they went with a PC release too, what sort of hack protection and DRM CCP would use, if any.. bleh, doesn't bear thinking about.
But yes, I'll definitely be a DUST merc' and all.

I would've played it if it came out for PC, but as it's supposedly not hitting the PC market, then I probably wont..
I could never even consider playing a FPS game on any other platform than the PC lol.. I need a keyboard and a mouse for FPS gaming.
