Cryptic and Atari released Star Trek Online at the beginning of February to much fanfare.
Three weeks later they're giving 90 days of free subscription time to new players, causing a flaming uproar and a page full of hate filled threadnaughts the likes of which Eve has never seen.
CCP got it right, and still gets it right, despite all of their stumbles and faceplants. They have always picked themselves up and managed to carry forth.
Take a look at STO, and see how to destroy a game before it can even grow.

seriously, who didn't foresee STO crashing and burning from beta. devs just want to pull what cash they can from the people before the servers collapse, which will probably be very soon _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

soonÖ technically refers to an unknowable and undefinable future date that may or may not occur; a sort of temporal agnosticism, if you will. Maybe soonÖ will happen. Maybe it won't.
therefore, we can conclude that soon would be more accurate here, as it will happen. in a short timespan. for realsies. _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

I remember having a good laugh at the boot.ini thing. My XP had managed to somehow lose it's boot.ini long before eve nuked it (and it told me so every time I started the computer - but it DID still boot normally, albeit with a quiet little grey message beforehand).
Summary: Delete/lose your boot.ini before EVE does and you'll be fine.

You know that eve has had some uber threadnaughts right?
but then the thought of one starting with, "I was boldly going about my business after paying the sub when I discovered 90days free for new players..." makes me chuckle.
How many variations on the names pickard, kirk and janeway are there anyway?
Sound like a whole lot of dull to me. --

Better choice: move to an OS where boot.ini does not exist and where normal processes have no right to even touch the root directory. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

even less than that XP users who had the boot partition not on the 1st partition and who downloaded and installed the patch within the 1st hour of it going live.

Quite logical why they gave 90 days, because they did a recent survey and it turns out A LOT of people are cancelling after their 30 day free trial runs out. 90 days gives Cryptic more time to finish their half-baked and broken game that hardly had any content at release. ---

Giving away 90 days of free game time suggests to me that the game is going down. Good, it was **** anyway. EVE has kept me entertained for nearly 5 years, nothing else came close. Except maybe the Grand Theft Auto series.

given what star trek was supposed to be like when the concept was first announced and what its turned out to be its a massive fail.
i'm a star trek nut who followed the development from when it was first announced with Perpetual Entertainment designing it. the screen shots they brought out from inside of the star ships with breath taking and the game concept was something totally fresh for a game of its type. then cryptic got hold of it through everything out of the window and from everything I saw built a single player game that just happens to let everybody log into.
and i dont know if they improved the graphics any but the screen shots i saw last year off the away missions the graphics looked about 5 years old.

What they're ruining themselves with is their stupid asset and patching system that requires them to patch 100-300MB of assets every time they do any kind of update. Since they have these patches every other day, they're killing themselves with bandwidth costs.
But yeah you're right, this game was dead before they even managed to launch it. ---

so STO has Shatner, WoW has Mr. T and Ozzy...
I figure we need somebody like Samuel L. Jackson or Nathan Fillion.

I was hoping this game would do well. But the fact the Goons managed to grief in the game despite no death penalty says it all really.
