Hello all!
I started Eve about a month ago, and I've got 3 accounts at this point. I plan to use 2 accounts with Hulks, and the 3rd to haul. Because I'm new to the game, I'm stuck on the type of ship to go with for hauling. I was curious if an Orca would suffice, or if I'm better off with a Freighter?
I understand that the Orca has far more versatility, and that the Freighter does nothing other than haul.
This is all in Highsec space btw.
Thanks! It's great to be a part of Eve!

The Answer is an Orca. When mining you jettsion your cans full or ore. Well, an orca can pick them up, where as a frieghter can not. Frieghters can not pick up jettsioned cans.

Might want to roll a toon without a name that does not look like an isk spammer smacked the keyboard with one hand a couple times .
Any way, your better off with 2 hulks and an ORCA, then have one of the hulk pilots trained to use an industrial. When the Orca gets full, you can swapp out one hulk pilot to an industrial from the maintence bay and haul it quickly to station while the Orca pilot and remaining hulk continue to mine. When the hauling is done you can then swap out back to the hulk and

The answer is certainly Orca.
And while the Orca can pick up jettisoned cans, and has 250% bonus to tractor range to make it even easier, you normally never do since the Orca has a corp hangar where the miners can dump their ore right in.
And the Orca requires quite a lot of mining bonus skills to even fly and can provide a lot more with more skills and gang links.
So while it's called "Industrial Commandship" it's really a mining commandship.

I'm sorry about the name, it was just a new char I used to mess with the char creation.
I really appreciate the prompt feedback. I had no idea which way to go, and no idea that a frigate could not pick up jettisoned cans!
Lors - I'm confused on what you mean that they don't transport. There is a refinery inside the Orca, or the ore goes directly to a station?
Thanks.

Would anyone be able to answer my question on the Orca? If it isn't used for hauling ore, then why not? What would be a decent substitute for hauling ore instead that holds as much?
Or is the Orca the way to go, bottom line?
Thanks.

The orca is the way to go, hands down.
Bennefits:
- with no skills/mods it has 470,000m3 of space for ore. Note that 400,000m3 is ONLY for ore/ice.[*]
[*]It can fit 2 hulks in its ship maintaince bay

Edited by: Grideris on 10/03/2010 02:45:02 The Orca is the best (for high sec) period.
The thing with the Orca vs say an industrial is that it has a special ore bay where you can only stick ore (So another 50,000m3 of space), a Corp hanger (So your toons can directly stick the ore in the Orca - also gives another bonus 40,000m3), the best high sec tractor (with 70km range and 1km/s and the ability to run command links - specificly Mining command links (you can run others, but why would you?).
There is no special refinery on the Orca - it just has a massive cargo space and the ablility to boost gangs. That's why you bring an indy in the SMA (Ship Maintainance Array - allows you to carry unpacked ships and deploy them in space as well as store other ships). As a previous post said, when the orca is full, one Hulk switches to the Indy, and hauls from the Orca back to the station.
Just note that with the Corp bay, you have to manualy move the ore between it and one of the other bays (Ore, Normal Cargo) if you want to stick something in it.
If you have any more questions that were not answered by this wall of text, you can Mail me ingame or convo me if I'm online.

This is incorrect. It has 120,000m3 with no skills/mods.

You do realize mining is one of the most boring and one of the few worst paying highsec activities in the game, don't you ? I only ask this because, well, you're new to the game, so obviously, you couldn't possibly know that for sure.

I wasn't actually aware of that. I don't mind the "boring" part, allows me to do school work in the process. Would I be able to do low-sec mining with 2 hulks and an orca? Or would that be far too risky without being able to defend my fleet?

Lowsec mining in belts pays about as much as highsec belt mining, and you'd probably lose all your ships in a matter of hours, if not minutes. Unless you plan to mine in alliance-controlled 0.0 space (you being in a member corp of the controlling alliance) or risk it in some wormhole space (a whole different set of problems), it's not really worth bothering.
You could semi-AFK different sets of L3 missions with a FOF Drake on each account and not just earn more ISK/hour overall, but also earn standings and have some SP that are worth something for PvP too, not just for a nearly dead-end activity. As an even bigger bonus, with multiple accounts, you could even run L4s very early on, and not only get a lot more ISK out of it, but if you also loot and salvage, end up with almost as many minerals as if you were mining ON TOP of bounty ISK and LPs and standing gains.

Yeah, they were probably looking at the wrong thing (like, say, the ship maintenance bay). Orca only gets 50,000 m^3 of specialized ore hold, 40,000 m^3 of corp hangar space plus 30,000 m^3 of base general cargo. Rorqual gets 250,000 m^3 specialized ore hold, 30,000 m^3 of corp hangar space (weird, huh?), 10,000 m^3 of ice fuel space (since it can't use stargates but has a jump drive) and 40,000 m^3 of base general cargo. No ship has 400k m^3 of specialized ore cargo bay space.

You are adding up the wrong columns.
The Orca has 50k m3 of dedicated Ore storage, 40k m3 of corp hangar and a base 'normal' cargo capacity of 30k m3.
The 400k m3 is the size of the maintenance bay, which as you say can hold for instance 2 Hulks. But note that ships stored can not carry any cargo except ammunition (incl mining crystals).
But it's worth to note that each level of the industrial command ship skill adds 5% extra to the (30k) normal cargo space.
Also, cargo rigs and expanders only add to the normal cargo space, not the ore and corp holds.

Yes, I have an Orca pilot with maxed skills and 2 x T2 & 1 T1 cargo rigs, T2 cargo expanders.... this give a cargo capacity of just over 100k, then add your 50k Ore hold & 40k Corp hanger. Total of a little under 200k.
Stick a salvager in the Maintenance bay also, every hour or so salvage the Rats wrecks, it all ads up.
The reason you need to haul with an industrial is so that you can keep the Orca in space. It loses the bonus from the Links while in warp and while docked.

Just go for the Orca...
It took me a while to get it, but now i have one, i'm wondering why it took me so long to decide.
Certainly one of the most usefull non combat ships out there. ________________________________________________
