i want to start farming R&D agents for data cores. i tried to use a low quality L3 agent near by just to try it out and the agent tells me i lack some skills even though my standings are high.
what skills do i need to use these agents?
thx in advance.

Depends on the agent. Look at the agent's info window, attributes tab. It will list 2-5 "advanced" science skills like Mechanical Engineering, Rocket Science, and the like. You must have one of those skills trained to 1 to begin research with the R&D agent. ---

- Science V - Research V - Laboratory Operation V - Research Project Management V - Negotiation V
- Two Specific Science Skills to V
This has surpassed the Yarrdware specification and has been dubbed Uberware. |

wrong, you will see when you do show info on the agent, for example: "Mechanical engineering 4, Rocket science 3, ..."
you need to get ONE of those skills up to the level required by the agent. So in that example if you have rocket science lvl3 you could do mechanical engineering research (if you had that skill and at least at lvl1).
Additional levels give you more RPs .

Surprisingly, no you don't. That's just the agent's level in the skill. You only need it to 1 to start accumulating RP with them. I've started many research agents when I only had the skill to 1.
However, you're completely right in that raising the skill to higher levels increases the RP/day you get, so getting it to 4 as soon as you can is definitely worthwhile.
Edit: for reference, the RP/day formula -
( Your_Skill_Lvl + Agent_Skill_Lvl ) ^2 * ( 1 + ( Agent_Effective_Quality / 100 ) ---

- Science V - Research V - Laboratory Operation V - Research Project Management V - Negotiation V
- Two Specific Science Skills to V
That's a hefty load of skills
- Science V This is needed in addition to Mechanic Engineering or Electronics V depending on the specific research skill
- Research V - Laboratory Operation V These are needed for getting Research Project Management, which allows you to use more than one research agent, but aren't needed to start the first one
- Research Project Management V Allows 1 more agent to be used per level. Not needed to five to do the research but helps maximize production of datacores
- Negotiation V Not needed to five but again, helps with production
- Two Specific Science Skills to V You only need one of the skills the agent uses. Some would argue to pick a single type of core and train the science skill to 5, to maximize training to datacore ratio.
It's not so skill intensive as needing all of the above to V thank goodness.

thx guys for the info.
now how much can one make off selling data cores in a week? i make a billion a week on L4 missions and want to know if it's comparable that or just a nice bonus isk.
been told it's good easy isk, but cannot get a decent ball park figure on how much. will one R&D agent do or must i farm more than one for comparable isk to what i get from missions?

Just to confirm this is utterly incorrect. You only need to train the related science skill (ie Mechanical Engineering) to level ONE in order to begin research (plus the other skill prerequisites).
However you are correct to state that training Mechanical Engineering higher will increase your daily research gain.

LOL. Nowhere NEAR that much, or anyone would have done it years ago. I think it's a few million isk/day with decent skills, but I haven't cashed in for about a year. And that is with 5 agents and a long long grind to get standings to use the best agents. 1 poor quality agent will probably get you a few hundred k.
