Volcano eruption (youtube) on south Iceland early this morning.
Hope everyone got evacuated in time and can get back to a home when it is all over. ________________________________

Some facts: * It is one of iceland's smaller volcano's * It is in a low population density area. Only 100's of people immediately affected. * News article expressed worry that it might trigger a much bigger volcano elsewhere on island.

LOL, I dunno how likely or unlikely this threat is, but I find it very funny that the link to news of potential threat comes from fox
Also, I'm no expert on Icelandic geography, but isn't the whole island basically a volcano? Isn't the number one source of energy geothermal? Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't this part of every day life for Iceland?

article
"Icelanders agree. "This could trigger Katla, which is a vicious volcano that could cause both local and global damage," Pall Einarsson, from the University of Iceland, said.
Tremors around Eyjafjallajokull were first recorded in early March, but precise prediction of volcanic eruption is difficult, even with the high-tech equipment available to Icelandic geologists.
Now that it has happened the only basis for prediction is history ù and that does not look good.
"Eyjafjallajokull has blown three times in the past thousand years," Dr McGarvie told The Times, "in 920AD, in 1612 and between 1821 and 1823. Each time it set off Katla." The likelihood of Katla blowing could become clear "in a few weeks or a few months", he said." CEO Essential Paradox When you get down to it, nothing makes sense. |

Let's hope this does not happen.
Anyone know how close Reykjavik is to this big volcano called Katla?
Edit: Measured the distance from Katla to Reykjavik, seems to be pretty precisely 150km..

One way of keeping your power bills down: Situate yourself on one of the most volcanicly active islands on the planet.

a volcano that size? I think "just" NW USA being affected by it is a very, very, very optimistic, if not totally wishful and delusional scenario. ---

Well now if you want to get technical, any volcano erupting anywhere on the planet can have global repercussions.

Not according to this from wikipedia?
University of Utah and National Park Service scientists with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory maintain that they "see no evidence that another such cataclysmic eruption will occur at Yellowstone in the foreseeable future. Recurrence intervals of these events are neither regular nor predictable."
Although if it is not predictable how can they predict it will not go off in the foreseeable future? And what is the rule of "foreseeable"? 10 years? 100 years? 1000 years? *scratches head*
