Edited by: CCP Greyscale on 22/03/2010 14:32:40 While we're at it, I'd like to mention that this post was emailed around prior to the meetings where we decided on these changes, and acted as a touchstone for a lot of the discussion. It's an excellent example of the kind of feedback that can have an immediate and direct effect on our decision-making processes.
Edited: Prism X has a better answer re alliance standings :)

Originally by: Areo Hotah As requested in the previous thread, and not mentioned in this dev blog: can alliances set standings to individuals now??
The alliance standings will function exactly like corporate ones. As you can add characters as corporate contacts, you will be able to add characters as alliance level contacts.
Alliance standings will continue to affect your overview according to your priory settings in the overview settings, we will simply add the possible alliance->character check as well (as now it is only alliance->alliance/corp).
Alliance standings will affect the the standing settings of POSs/Outposts that are set to "Use Alliance Standings". This will be a complete overwrite of what standings are used to resolve aggression, service access and cost NOT some aggregate/mean/min/max of the corp/alliance.
People in your alliance will NOT have an implicit standing of 10, people in your corp will. ~ Prism X EvE Database Developer Relocating your character to a cozy, secure container since 2006. Relocating your cozy, secure container to the EVE cemetery since 2008. |

Not to be a ****, but...why can't individuals have advanced mode? That seems to be a rather arbitrary and absurd decision.
There's no granular functionality on a character level requiring it to be a slider. After the feedback and some soul searching with the code it became obvious that implementing the discrete standings on a corporate level without sacrificing the flexibility of the current functionality wasn't as cheap as we initially imagined. Hence we had good reasons to retain them in the slider format. Having made the corporation decision on the facts above it made a whole lot more sense to add a slider on the alliance level so that it could become as useful as the corporate standings.
Q: Why not have an optional advanced mode for characters? A: Because it is just complicating things for no reason. If you have an optional "Advanced Mode" you're in your rights to expect using it to have an effect and when it doesn't we might have confused you for no good reason.
Edit: Yes, a character can set an entire alliance to a given level. ~ Prism X EvE Database Developer Relocating your character to a cozy, secure container since 2006. Relocating your cozy, secure container to the EVE cemetery since 2008. |

Originally by: Agent Unknown What about the differences between individual/corporate standings and colors?
For example, if I set a corporation to -5 on a personal level, they appear red, but at -4.9 they appear orange. If this is done at the corp level (corp to corp), -5 is orange and not red. Is this a "feature"?
Not quite sure what you're on about here. It is not my intention to program in any discrepancies between personal, corporate and alliance contacts other than the personal ones lacking the granularity. That of course means that you can set an entity to -5.1 on a corporation level but only to -10 (red) or -5 (orange) on a personal level and a -5.1 would show up as (red) as it's below -5. -4.9 would be orange as it's -5 < -4.9 < 0. ~ Prism X EvE Database Developer Relocating your character to a cozy, secure container since 2006. Rather than keep your hopes up I'll just come out and say that all of this is outside the scope of the current release plan due to resource constraints. However, the team does agree with your assertion and given more time and man power this would rank quite highly on the list of should-do's we'd pull in. But alas.
I am only saying this in the spirit of transparency. I am not promising any work being done on behalf of my co-workers because that would be rude and I cannot promise you that we'll fit iterations of this into any specific date as it is not my decision. I can however tell you that we're not ignoring you, we simply yet sadly must pick and choose our battles.
As to the comments, you have the character notes. Having 'specialized' character notes all over the place sounds horrendously confusing compared to having them accessible at a single location. In my opinion at least. ~ Prism X EvE Database Developer Relocating your character to a cozy, secure container since 2006. Relocating your cozy, secure container to the EVE cemetery since 2008. |

Thank you Bato for pointing out how convoluted the standings really are
Let me attempt to clarify.
There is no implicit resolution FROM your corporation TO your alliance resulting in an implied standing. However, just like FROM your corporation TO your corporation resolves into the implied standing of 10, the FROM your alliance TO your alliance resolves in a standing of 10. This makes perfect sense as you're asking about how much you like yourself.
So, if your POS is set to use the alliance standings, all resolutions will be based on FROM your alliance TO the entity in question (and its super entities) and if that entity is in your alliance the check is FROM alliance X -> (character Y, corp Z, alliance X) resulting in the standing of 10. If you have the POS set to using your corporate standings and your corporation does NOT have your entire alliance set to 10 (which it can do by simply setting the entire alliance to whatever standing it prefers rather than adding in all the corporations), it might very well start shooting at alliance members depending on settings. Of course if you set the insane "Use Aggression" setting on it'll turn into a homicidal maniac per usual.
The infrastructure will (erm.. let's go with should ) not turn on you on patch day.. it should have the exact same functionality as before. Currently existing overviews will display the new information to executors and directors. I'm not a UI developer so I'm not going to commit a professional suicide by promising any new UI. ~ Prism X EvE Database Developer Relocating your character to a cozy, secure container since 2006.
