The guy getting hit by an aircraft while running one the beach?
Last week someone in the Radio told about a guy who got killed because he was listening to music while running on the beach and therefore unable to hear the plane behind him wich tryed to crashland on the beach? If anyone has found an article or anything that actualy confirms this i would love to see it.

Man, what are the odds. Running on a beach and getting hit by a crash landing plane, you like don't get more opposite than that.

About 3 hours for me, I'm all the way over in the upstate.
You know guys, aside from the fact he was wearing an iPod, the dead engine aircraft probably still wouldn't have been heard.
This is really one of the things that frighten me about electric cars, I've never heard one pass me yet, but I have to wonder how many have. > WHILE SIG<AWESOME DO LOOP there is no escape from my crappy sig. |

Dont worry, the roads have so many potholes in them these days you can hear them from several miles away.

you are more likely to fall out of your bed and die from it than winning the lotto. you are more likely to get struck by lighting, twice in your life time than winning the lotto. now getting hit by an airplane on a beach... well i can assume winning the lotto can still top it off barely. And no i dont think the guy qualifies for a darwin award, because his death was enabled by a third party person aka somone else's stupidity lead to his demise

Apparently, car manufacturers are debating about whether or not they'll install some device to make noise when the car goes under a certain speed. At over twenty mph the wind makes more noise than the engines of most cars, so its only the low speeds that matter...
Also, regarding getting killed by a crash-landing plane.... that is just wow... like impossible chances.... I feel bad for his kids/wife... _________________________________________________________________ You just lost the game, my friend... Wrong! - Cortes

Indeed ,oil all over the windshield. Some idiot mentioned (in the article i read) that he should just stick his head out of the window to see. Do you stick your head out of window of your car when your going 60 and you cant see out of the windshield? Hell no.
he specifically did NOT go towards the water, because from what I understand it was rather deep and generally not what you want to land an airplane in.
Im fairly sure 'accidental killing' of someone is a stupid thing to try him for, as how the hell was he going to know some guy was gonna be in the wrong place at the wrong time? If Shelly had landed on a boat in the Hudson, would he not be a hero? Im fairly sure any jury 'of your peers' would laugh it out of court. This guy landed a plane on someone. Is he supposed to instead suicide himself to MAKE SURE he doesnt hit anyone? I think the entire thing is stupid.

the plane had 2 people on board, pilot and passenger.
An attempt to ditch, first of all, the landing gear would catch, and likely slam the aircraft into the water, possibly even breaking up. Especially when the pilot can't see. The occupants may lose consciousness, or other injuries.
Then, the aircraft will sink, rapidly. The pilot and passenger would be wearing seat belts, and getting out the seat, opening the door, and getting out, is not simple.
So, no, putting it into the water wasn't a viable option.

The whole reason he crashed on the beach was to avoid hitting someone with the plane dumb@$$...unfortunately it happened anyways...

Looking at the larger size picture of that crashed plane I see absolutely no indication of an oil leak anywhere on the plane. So unless some random homeless man ran up right after the crash and wiped it all clean for a dollar that theory is out the window. The pilot should face manslaughter charges at the very least as it was his responsibility to keep the plane in a safe operating condition.

So what would you do?
Don't go critisising a guy for trying to make something from a seriously crap situation, especially when you obviously don't know wtf you are talking about. I hold a PPL (that's private pilots licence to you) To get that licence one of the things you practice is dead engine landings. A plane is easy to fly, but dealing with problems when things go wrong is the hard part.
Let me tell you, I did my engine out stuff in a fully controlled envoronment, engine idling, prop feathered and instructer covering the controls and take it from me, it was one of the scariest things I've had to do. Also, the one thing you are also taught is Landing on land is good, landing on water BAAAD!

Look at the sand the plane is sitting on. See how it's on the band of dark sand near the water? That's the part which is underwater at high tide. Now note the caption: the day AFTER the crash. There's no conspiracy here, the oil was just washed off by the waves.

Which is just stupid for two reasons:
1) Landing on the beach like that is likely to damage the plane anyway. See a slight problem with no landing gear? That's because landing on soft sand will probably collapse them, causing structural damage in addition to whatever other damage is done by hitting the ground. Add in the nasty effects of salt water, and the plane was probably a complete loss anyway.
2) Most airplanes are insured. Rule #1 of emergency situations: as soon as the emergency happens, the insurance company just bought your airplane. Save yourself and your passengers and if the plane is still intact at the end of it all, it's just a nice bonus.
The real reason the pilot landed on the beach is because it was the best available spot to land.

I guess I'm the only one who thought engine-out landings were fun? I mean, you're at idle power on final anyway, so just make your turn to base a bit earlier and gain bonus style points for making a "difficult" landing flawlessly. -----------
