Got some time to kill and I need a break from Eve.
Been hearing a bit about both these games.
Anyone have an opinion?

I haven't even played borderlands and I can say ME2 is a better choice. Its probably best game I've played in a long long time.
Assuming you've played the first one, you'll be in for a real treat.

ME2 has no multiplayer, single-player is decent to good (even if I personally liked Mass Effect 1 more for various reasons). I finished ME2 at least once, and might do it again some day (diff. class, diff. difficulty setting, diff. ME1 pre-run, better or just different ending, etc). ME3 will be coming soon, and will be using ME2 saves. Other than occasional framerate stutters, it remained playable almost all the time on lowest possible detail settings (which are far less adjustable "downwards" compared to the ones in ME1, so the "lowest" ME2 settings still look better than the average in ME1).
Borderlands has multiplayer, but single-player is at best "meh". I never even got past halfway in the storyline, I became so annoyed with the lack of anything interesting in it that I just stopped playing it. The fact that my machine could barely get a half-decent FPS even at the lowest possible graphics settings (and then it looked like junk) wasn't at all any help whatsoever. Never had been interested in the multiplayer part of it, so never tried it, can't say anything about it with certainty, neither good nor bad... but if the singleplayer is any indication, it can't be too great.
Yes, I have a crummy PC CPU (E2140, Dual Core @ 1.6), with a cheapish 8500 GT (512 MB), but at least I have 4 GB of RAM (well, 3.5 GB, actually, thanks to the 32-bit XP). Even if it was already pretty low-end even when I purchased it 2++ years ago, that's more than enough for everything else I need that's not games-related, and most of the games I enjoy were running "good enough" on it, including EVE single-instance on "high" graphic settings... and since I seldom ever actively dual-box EVE, that's also good enough. Granted, that makes me miss on some of the "shiny games of today", but I don't really feel I lost anything of importance by not playing games that just won't run on it for minimal acceptable playability.

I'd definitely recommend Mass Effect 2. Border lands is ok online but single player is just plain dull. If you want to know a bit more about ME2 check out the thread on it a few pages back (be warned it contains spoilers though).

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 24/03/2010 08:45:13 Mass Effect is a very linear game. Most of the time you can choose which side mission you want to take next, but thats it. I guess many people disliked the exploration side missions of ME1 so it got removed and the whole game resembles now the main story missions of ME1. Enjoyable if played for the first time, but thats it.
The game is very streamlined, most consider this fine but I do not. I guess I am just a different generation of gamers who don't want everything handed down. Streamlined means "dumbed down" for me.
I would be really happy if Bioware would create a new game like Baldurs Gate 2 but with a new setting, storyline and characters. Even with outdated 2D graphics it would be a must-buy for me.

Huh? I thought that ME2 was a vast improvement over ME1, though that too was good.
Anyway, I just finished Mass Effect 2. It's good. Really, really good. I can't recommend it enough.

Both games are good, but ME 1 was a fuller stand alone experience, that felt like something truly original. It had its share of issues too though. The second one wasn't as satisfying, so from my long time RPG-fan perspective:

I see what you did there, and I approve ;)
I'll say go with Mass Effect 2. Borderlands was fun only for a few hours. the 'new car smell' wore off way too fast. a million weapons? yeah, all weapons have the ability to have ~6 different types of stats.. then you randomize and increase the stats in tune with the level-progression... so all weapons are just variations on a theme. and there's no story to speak of.
ME2 on the other hand... has less weapons, perhaps.. but they're all cool and there's an actual story to speak of at great length ;)

Borderlands gives you more control over the game, and if you like finding/upgrading new weapons and gear etc you'll be better off with that. ME2 has an epic story and is very well made but if you strip away all the cool cinematics and all that the game itself is somewhat simplistic.
It depends on what you want, either an RPG with scavenging for weapons and upgrades or a cinematic rollercoaster. Borderlands is more of a game but ME2 is one of those "must have played" titles.

Borderlands is one of the most boring games I have ever played in my life. Terrible experience. It basically has no story. Think of Hellgate London. Now think of it without the story and most of the RPG elements removed. You end up with Borderlands.
Mass Effect 2 over Boringlands any time.

lol funny image but I don't agree with it. There is more to RPGs than stat building.

I just finished Borderlands and am embarking on Playthrough 2 (which is just a harder version of the first run through, unlocks after you beat it once).
I like borderlands, it's one of the few games on the market right now that you can't really complete in 1 sitting. (I HATE ALL THE A.D.D. GAMERS THAT RUINED GAMING). If you're looking for something that will actually take more than 6-12 hours to complete, Borderlands is pretty good. The one thing I didn't like about it is the fact that it uses the Unreal engine. I hate the Unreal engine, it's not very realistic in it's physics and animation.
Borderlands was fairly entertaining if you're not one of the types that just quickly clicks through everything, there's quite a bit of humor in it.
I was a bit thrown off by the cartoonish graphics, but that was the intent of the designers, not lack of ability to do shiny Crysis type stuff.
I never got to play Mass Effect, my computer should have been able to run it, I purchased it, then found out later when I tried to run it that I happen to have an ATI card that was listed as incompatible (just happens to an odd model that won't run it, a bunch of similar and lesser models will), but that was burried deep in the knowledgebase, not listed anywhere in the system requirements or on their forums. I had to dig around for quite a while to discover it, thankfully direct2drive refunded me after I pointed it out, and without any fuss either.

Well, anyone with a face like THAT has GOT to be brain damaged, so your opinion doesn't count.
But seriously, I wouldn't say that ME2 was definitely worse than ME1 - it was just different. I still preferred ME1, as I felt like I had more freedom in the game. But I definitely see a lot of points where ME2 is better. ----------

Nah, just over simplified :P There is some truth to his commentary, saved me from getting really bad games, or made me kick myself for getting some.
If you take it all with a grain of salt, it's rather useful to weed out real garbage.

His videos are not very good at all as reviews. His videos are humorous, and not more than that.
For instance, he reviewed Battlefield: Bad Company 2 recently without ever mentioning the multiplayer, and just slamming the single player; BC2 is a 100% multiplayer focused game.

Which would make me not get it, if I buy something that's not an MMO, then it's for single player, and if the single player of a fps sux, I definitely won't get it...like one of my bigger mistakes of purchasing Section 8, the single player takes a whole hour and a half to complete...complete garbage.
Not everyone who plays non-MMO games likes playing them online :P

Borderlands is a good game if you like finding better and better weapons all the time. If great twitch-based FPS play and finding smexy new drops every 15 minutes makes you wet, get Borderlands. Unfortunately the plot and its ending were absolutely terrible. DLC doesn't help.
Personally, I'd go Mass Effect 2. Doesn't have the FPS-feel I got from Borderlands, more like "run forward, crouch, stand, 3 round burst, crouch, repeat". However, I'm willing to ignore that for an immersive storyline and the feeling like I'm actually changing the world.

Haha, that might be true.
Anyway, I highly recommend ME 2. Played soldier sheppard male on first run. On 2nd run for female sheppard for biotic and people say the voice actor for female is ton better than the make one and I agree. both of first run is Paragon.
After the 2nd run, gonna do male shaeppard for the evil side, dunno what to go with, but probably to use snipers
I do recommend getting ME 1 also though. ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

You find it at the end of one of the loyalty missions. If you miss it then you just miss it. Using the forged IDs is a renegade option anyway.
