I don't know if you ever worked with some army computer but you'd believe yourself 50 years back. The major reason being you don't want to use buggy stuff or fancy stuff for important tasks, you want to use solid stuff that works and has no problems. Then figure out when you change something you're talking about trillions of $ in hardware/software personnel learning, deal with new bugs etc etc.
Did you even knew Internet concept is a old research who comes from CERN? -no you don't
About the hot chicks, well, I know a few working at CERN being my clients, and agree they didn't choose the hottest for that presentation brb |

Yes, that would be a Nobel in itself, but I'm poor.
The Higgs field is like an invisible syrup that extends across the whole universe and slows everything down, and Higgs bosons are like little globs of the syrup that cause everything to stick together.

They still need to work out the exact properties of the HB.
And there are other non-Higgs experiments happening at the LHC, mainly concerned with supersymmetry and which could explain dark matter.

Yes, that would be a Nobel in itself, but I'm poor.
There are electrons, protons, neutrons, and many other combining blocks of the universe. The theory of how everything comes to combine together is called the Standard Model. However, they had one field called the Higgs field, with particles called the Higgs-boson particle that causes everything to gain mass and combine together, essentially acting as a glue on the atomic level.
Without the Higgs field or the Higgs-boson particle, we would not be "together". An unimaginably infinite number of atoms would simply be moving throughout the universe, never combining to anything and thus none of us would be formed.
The guy who described the Higgs field as a wall of syrup is really the best way to explain it... I am the Kingpin of the Crime and Punishment forum.

I imagine they will try to manipulate the HB particle,
It will give them something to do for the next 30 years plus they will get loads of under-the-table funding from various goverments so someone can successfully create a HB bomb and the whole glorious solar system will disappear in a flash when some religious crackpot can't see the irony of using this device to create his version of armageddon.
Apart from that +1 for the fairground ride it would be a blast! God Said "Come Forth and receive eternal life!"-á I came second and won a toaster. |

You'd still have electromagnetism without the Higgs field, so in theory atoms would still occasionally pass close by other atoms and end up forming molecules - but there wouldn't be any gravity pulling the atoms together across large distances so the number of meetings would be substantially lower than in the real universe.
You certainly wouldn't see any large aggregations of matter without the Higgs though because electromagnetism is no good at holding things together across large distances.
Because of this, stars wouldn't be able to form, which would mean that atoms heavier than hydrogen wouldn't have been produced by nuclear fusion. Dulce et decorum est pro imperium mori. |

Hardcore religious people claimed that when the LHC was switched on, it would create a black hole that would instantly destroy the planet. Those crazies will come up with any excuse to keep us all in the dark ages.
The suggestion was that negatively charged strangelets could be produced that may cause the auto catalytic conversion of ordinary matter into more strangelet material until the whole of the planet was consumed. Microscopic black holes are short lived and quickly evaporate through the Hawking radiation mechanism so they don''t represent a theoretical hazard.

Well yes, the specifics still need to be hammered out, but for the time being this largely confirms that the current model is accurate. The real question(at least from what I've gathered in my limited understanding) is if there is a variety of boson types and just how accurate our current model is. Either way, it's a great day for science. |

If they have a great day, but again for my limited mind as well, this is all about stats and sometimes things appear in the figures but then when more data is added these anomalies can just disappear again. Look at the faster than light fiasco a little while back. So while I do hope they have done it, the cynic in me will wait for when they say "we have "definitely" found it".
